HISTORY: Born in Anchorage and growing up in a remote village in Alaska, Sarah and her younger sister Alexandra enjoyed an idyllic life. Her father was a retired air force captain and the pilot of a small airline and her mother was a homemaker. Tragedy struck, however, when the family went on a vacation to the Canadian Rockies. One engine of her father's plane caught fire, and Christopher Summers gave Sarah the only parachute on board, put Alexandra in her arms, and pushed her out the hatch of the plane. The parachute caught fire and the two children plummeted into the Canadian wilderness, becoming separated. Sarah believe her entire family was dead, and she returned to Alaska to be raised by her grandparents. When she was a sophomore in high school, Sarah began to have intense headaches and suffer from blurring vision. She went to a doctor, who prescribed ruby quartz sunglasses. Sarah's headaches eased for a time, but soon she realize that they were connected to something more than mere eyestrain. Sarah's powers manifested in the most violent of ways - her first optic blast severed the cable of a crane, nearly crushing a crowd of people under it. They were only saved when Sarah disintegrated the crane as it fell with another blast. Shattered, Sarah ran away from home and went to an orphanage. She was found there by Professor Charles Xavier, who had begun to find and harbor mutant children with gifts that made them a danger to themselves or others. Sarah was Xavier's first student at his School for Gifted Children, and later the first member of his superhero team. Sarah grew into a poised and confident young woman, leader of the first incarnation of the X-Women and scion of Xavier's vision. She had a high-school romance with fellow mutant Gene Grey, but when he was possessed by the Phoenix Force he went to live in space with the Shi'ar to ensure he would not be a danger to Earth. Xavier soon followed him to be with his love, Shi'ar queen Lilandra. Sarah carried on Xavier's legacy, eventually marrying a mutant navy SEAL named Matthew 'Slash' Kerns. She was reunited with her sister Alexandra, now calling herself Havok and leading the government-sponsored team of mutants X-Factor. The X-Women, along with Slash, fought hard to bring mutants acceptance, and eventually, it came about in a large part. The X-Women drifted away to their own lives and pursuits, leaving only a tiny contingent of heroes, and Sarah received another loss when she was informed that Slash was MIA and presumed dead. It wasn't until the super-powerful villain Atom attacked New York that the X-Women were sent back into action. Atom proved more than a match for the three mutants who still lived at Xavier's school, and Sarah put out the call for the X-Women to return. Among them was Slash, who had finally escaped his overseas prison and returned to his wife. With his help, and the newly revamped team, Sarah led the charge to defeat Atom and many villains who came after him. Ultimately, however, fate was not kind to Cyclops. After she discovered that Slash was being unfaithful and divorced him, Gene Grey returned from space for a time, but their renewed relationship was hampered by Wolverine and Gene's mutual attraction. Sarah ultimately took Slash back, but he was killed during the mutant roundup surrounding Drake Dubois and his Sentinels. Cyclops, unable to deal with the loss any longer, largely took her leave of the X-Women, turning her leadership of Gold Team over to Beast. She remained in contact with the heroes she had helped bring to inception, helping them prepare for a new millennium of battles.
