A Brief History of Monaco Bay Weyr

To keep our world and Anne McCaffrey's legally seperated, we've had to slighty alter Pern's history to fit into our 7th Pass timeline. Here's the jist of what's different:

When the Crossing descibed in The Chronicles of Pern occured, there was a group of people who opted to stay on the Southern Continent; some to complete research, and others because they refused to be uprooted from their new stakeholds. They argued that since they were a safe distance from Landing and Mount Garben, they would be safe from localized volcanic activity in that area. There would still be frequent earthquakes, but the settlers argued that they could deal with that. The leaders of the colony agreed, but were faced with a dilema: how to protect the people who stayed South from the raveges of Thread.

With only eighteen dragons at their disposal at the time, it was agreed that half would aide the sleds in the South, and the other half in the north. Meanwhile, a site was searched for in which a permanent home for future dragons would be set up. A promising site was found in a ridge not far from Monaco Bay stakehold.

After Benden was founded, Monaco Bay Weyr was founded as Pern's third Weyr. ((This is taken directly form the DLG2, with a few revisions by Keri to keep us legal)) At Monaco Bay, the typical volcanic crater is abscent. After they leave the Weyrling Barracks, dragons sleep in wallows in the sand and their riders live in nearby cabins situated in and around the main Weyr area. This consists of offices for the Weyr/wingleaders and extensive kitchens, even though most of the cooking is done in the open air.

Both the Weyr and the surrounding holds flourished as the Turns went by, but the population stayed relatively small due to batches people moving North when the limited living space got crowded or to seek better opportunities at the "real" crafthalls on the Northern continent.

Through most of the last twelve years, the Weyrleaders have been C'varl, rider of bronze Tolth and Andria, rider of gold Kiath. Together, they kept the Weyr running semi-smoothly, prevented Thread from burrowing, kept pesky holders from seeking out more land further and further from the Weyr, and pretended they enjoyed each other's company the whole time.

However, in the Twentieth turn of the Seventh pass, a problem arose at Telgar Weyr -- namely, an uppity young goldrider took more power than she could handle. This caused Andria to transfer out, to serve as Weyrwoman of Telgar. Leah, a goldrider from Telgar, along with her unique set of clutchmates, transferred in, and Mirisae took Andria’s place as Weyrwoman. C’varl also decided to step down, into the position of wingleader, and K’tei, rider of bronze Tlaerth, stepped up to become Weyrleader.
