Dictionary of Wiccan Terms
Akasha-The fifth element, also known as Spirit. It is the
spiritual power
that permiates the universe.
Amulet-A magickally charged object.
Athame-A Wiccan ritual knife. Usually double edged with a black handle.
Balefire-A fire lit for magickal purposes, usually outdoors. Done
on Yule,
Beltane and Midsummer.
Banishing-To disable a harmful entity
Beltane-Known as May Eve, a Wiccan Festival usually on April 30 or May 1.
Besom-Broom, used to purify your working area before a ritual.
Book of Shadows-Wiccan book to keep track of rituals and magickal lore.
Censer-Incense burner, symbolized the element Air.
Charge-To infuse and object with your own personal power.
Cone of Power-Traditional name for the power raised by a coven
or solitary
witch.
Conscious Mind-The rational part of our mind, opposed to the Psychic Mind.
Coven-A group of Wiccans usually with one or two leaders.
Deosil-Clockwise
Drawing down the Moon-The invocation by the High Priest of the
spirit of
the Goddess into the High Priestess.
Earth Power-The power that comes from stones, herbs or other natural
objects.
Elemental-A non-material entity of the four elements-Earth, Air, Wind, Fire
Esbat-Wiccan ritual that occurs every 28 days with the coming of
the full
moon.
Evoking-Summoning a non-material entity of a lower nature (than human)
Familiar-An animal kept by a coven or solitary for the psychic
support it
offers.
Gnome-A traditional term for a Earth elemental.
Grimoire-Book to hold magickal workings (BOS)
Handfasting-A Wiccan of Pagan wedding.
Hereditary-Witches who's practices have gone through generations
of their
families.
Imbolc-A Wiccan festival celebrated on February 2nd. Also known
as
Candelmas, Feast of Pan, and several others.
Initiation-A process used to bring people into a coven.
Lammas-A Wiccan festival celebrated on August 1, it is also known
as the
Feast of Bread.
Mabon-Wiccan festival celebrated on or around September 21, Mabon
is the
autumn equinox, Wiccans celebrate the second harvest.
Magick-Using the energy around us to make changes.
Midsummer-The summer solstice usually on or near June 21, a Wiccan
festival and an excellent night to do magick.
Neo-Pagan-Means new-Pagan.
Old Ones-A Wiccan term used to encompass all aspects of the God
and
Goddess.
Runes-Stones with one letter of either the Nordic or AngloSaxon
alphabet,
each having a different significance, used in Divination.
Salamander-Traditional name used for the Fire elemental.
Scrying-Another form of divination, using a mirror or crystal ball
or even
a pot of water.

Smudging-Waving a smoldering handful of herbs at a person, a ritual
cleansing, should be done in the room that holds magick for you before
performing any spells. This was adopted from Native American rituals.
Sylph-A traditional term for an Air elemental.
Undine-Traditional term for a Water elemental.
Wiccaning-A wiccan equivalant of a christening.
