Swindled

8/21/01, late morning
In a way, today was the first day of school for GC. It was her first day back at the complex since school let out in late June. Today she would get her Student ID and tentative class programming. If she had enough money, GC would also purchase her Yearbook, Activity Card, and Senior Dues Card.
Getting all the stuff was not a problem; the class schedule was, however. GC had five classes: Honors Physiology, Creative Writing, Math Analysis, AP Spanish Language, and AP Statistics. There was no English class, which GC needed, and she had never signed up for AP Statistics. This needed fixing, and GC would do just that.
GC’s counselor was as helpful as she could be, GC kept trying to believe. Her “Women’s Intuition” was dictating otherwise, especially when student and counselor tackled the lack of an English class. GC had the notion that her counselor thought she was taking the Creative Writing class in place of English. That could not have been farther from the truth; GC had no wish to try and do such.
Compared to the hour of waiting GC wasted to speak to her counselor, the counselor wasted no time in “fixing” her schedule. GC kept her five classes, but they were all work: English, Honors Physiology, AP Government, AP Spanish Language, and Math Analysis. No Creative Writing.
GC left her school angry and dejected. The one class she hoped to get would not be hers. What a wonderful school year this was turning out to be.
All hope was not lost, however. GC’s mother, a teacher within the LAUSD system, offered to work her magic. GC accepted but, due to her personality, did not stress it upon her mother.
A few days passed, and GC’s mother was finally able to get a hold of GC’s counselor. The two talked, and GC’s mom “worked her magic”. She spoke of how GC loved to write, how she even had a website of her own; she finally “threatened” to go over to GC’s school and speak to the head of the English Department. That did it. After much tweaking, GC acquired yet another class schedule: English, Honors Physiology, AP Government, Creative Writing, and AP Spanish Language.
Things were good.
