Chart of Relationships

In the various Star Trek series, especially the third and fourth, there are webs, triangles, etcetera of potential and actual lovers. Since the female characters are less numerous, I’ll use them as a base. I’m including regular and re-occuring characters only.

Nyota Uhura—the hinting here was more subtle than most; Uhura was never the main focus of TOS, and neither were most of her admirers.

Pavel Chekov—as far as I know, most of the hints about this relationship occur in the fourth and sixth movies, as well as the episode “The Trouble with Tribbles.” In this episode, it is clear that Chekov has a crush on Uhura, and she seems to regard it similarly (though less harshly) to the way Jadzia regarded Julian in the first season of DS9.
Hikaru Sulu—most of this is left to the imagination, but Sulu, Uhura, and Chekov often made up a trio on shore leave.
Scotty—as far as I know, this is only hinted at in the fifth movie; it was shocking and quite out of character for both.
James T. Kirk—Kirk is one of those ‘ladies’ men,’ but he hasn’t bothered Uhura as much as you might expect.

Beverly Crusher—Strong and intelligent Chief Medical Officer, or complete airhead? The fans’ opinions are divided on this, but to Jean-Luc, she’s a jewel.

Jean-Luc Picard—with a history of friendship prior to TNG, he and Beverly were meant for each other from the beginning, and several episodes scattered throughout the series suggested at a relationship, but it is so far unfullfilled.
William T. Riker—he seemed quite taken by her, although he was joined with the Trill Odan at the time.

Deanna Troi—she’s known as the babe of TNG.

William T. Riker—he and Troi were together before the show series, and now, finally, they’ve gotten together again in the ninth film.
Worf—in the seventh season, the writers toyed briefly with the idea of a relationship here, but it really didn’t work well, and it was never even hinted at in the movies.
Thomas Riker—since he and William Riker used to be the same person, he has similar romantic interest in Troi; this relationship almost happened, but Troi wasn’t quite ready to give up her career.

Dax (Jadzia and Ezri)—a real ‘heartbreaker,’ Dax became somewhat unavailable partway through the fifth season, but that didn’t stop others from looking at her. For most of the seventh season, she was fair game again, but is now living happily ever after with Doctor Bashir.

Julian Bashir—admired her from the moment they met; never quite got Jadzia, but is now Ezri’s paramour.
Worf—courted, married, and lost Jadzia, then had a go at Ezri.
Quark—Feringi tend to admire females in general, but in the seventh season particularly, Quark seems to love Dax.
Morn—Jadzia used to have a crush on him.
Jake Sisko—thinks Ezri is ‘cute.’
Benjamin Sisko—the writers toyed with this for an episode or two, but it never went anywhere.
Brunt—the Alternate Brunt was attracted to the alternate Ezri and cared for her in a very un-Feringi-like way.
Grand Nagus Zek
—typical Feringi affection, here.

Kira Nerys—even though Dax was meant to be the ‘babe’ of DS9, Kira has a virtual army of lovers and admirers; she has had, at various times, virtually the entire male senior staff, as well as many of the reoccurring characters, lusting after her.

Julian Bashir—the writers briefly toyed with the idea of a relationship here, but they dropped it rather quickly; perhaps they wanted to stay away from the real-life romance between Visitor and Siddig.
Quark—as I said, Quark admires all women, but the affection here is pretty one-sided; Kira usually can’t stand him.
Jake Sisko—in one episode, where certain emotions surfaced, Jake had a big crush on Kira.
Odo—her lover from mid-sixth season to the series finale; we’ve known about Odo’s love for her since the third season, but Kira didn’t return the affection for a long time.
Miles O’Brien—the writers briefly toyed with this as well, but wisely decided that it wouldn’t work, especially since Miles is married.
Grand Nagus Zek—in one episode, he flirted with Kira; she made it clear that she wasn’t interested.
Thomas Riker—this ‘affair,’ if it can be called that, lasted for only one episode; he apparently forgot Deanna rather quickly.
Bariel—Kira was involved with him for a year or so before he died.
Shaakar—Kira was involved with him for a while, but they gradually grew apart.
Benjamin Sisko—Kira’s alternate universe counterpart found Sisko attractive and used to keep him as a toy boy.
Garak—this was very subtley hinted at in several episodes, especially “Second Skin,” but they usually can’t stand each other. They also worked closely together in the Final Chapter.
Dukat
—for a while around the third and fourth seasons, Dukat was a bit of a rouge, and Kira was almost on friendly terms with him; this all changed when Dukat made an alliance with the Dominion and came back into power. For his part, Dukat gets a sick pleasure out of toying with Kira, and is forever trying to win her approval for his actions.
Intendant Kira Nerys—no, this isn’t a joke; the Intendant from the Mirror Universe is in love with her own face; what could be more perfect for her than her double?

Leeta—though somewhat of an airhead, this Dabo girl has made her place in the DS9 family.

Julian Bashir—they had a relationship from sometime in the third season to sometime in the fifth. I was relieved when the writers decided to drop it.
Rom—this really began before her affair with Bashir ended; they are now happily married.
Grand Nagus Zek—he shows an interest in her just as much as he does in any attractive female.

Katherine Janeway—first officers, helm boys, and Irish holograms...did I miss something?

Chakotay—he and Janeway have a friendship that occasionally threatens to become something more, but the writers always back away.
Tuvok—he was the only crew member who was previously aquainted with Janeway, and they share a deep connection; as a Vulcan, Tuvok only mates when undergoing the Pon Farr; Janeway is a strong candidate.
Tom Paris—the writers toyed briefly with the idea of a relationship between Janeway and Paris; it should be said that they are the only couple of regular characters who actually had lasting children (so what if they were lizards at the time?).
Michael O’Sullivan—Janeway is currently having it off with a computer program from one of Paris’s holoprograms.

Kes—a brief character in many ways, Kes was involved with Neelix for 90% of her time on the series, though others still chased her.

Neelix—as mentioned, they were together for nearly 3 years; he was very jealous of her other admirers.
The Doctor—Kes was his assistant, and he admired her emensely, though she was always devoted to Neelix.
Tom Paris—the ‘walking hormone’ was constantly chasing her, and in one episode, he actually married her in the future, and, although it didn’t ‘really’ happen, they had a daughter; for a time, there was a lot of bad blood between him and Neelix.
Tuvok—not really a romantic possibility so much as that he was just her mentor—but there’s always the Pon
Farr thing.

B’Elanna Torres—since the beginning of the fourth season, she’s been off limits to all but Paris (pity, that).

Harry Kim—in the first episode, and to a lesser extent in the first and second seasons, they were together a lot; a romance never quite formed, but it could have, given more time.
Chakotay—for a while, this was a possibility, but it soon gave way to Chakotay’s admiration for Janeway.
Tom Paris—currently involved with B’Elanna, Paris seems to show affection for just about every female he sets eyes on; it is somewhat ironic that B’Elanna is practically the only female he hasn’t had children with.

Seven of Nine—a babe by all standards, Seven is one of those characters that attracts and terrifies at the same time.

Harry Kim—he had a crush on her around the first half of the fourth season, but the writers seem to have dropped this.
The Doctor—lately, the writers seem to have been working toward some sort of relationship here, but I fail to see how it could work.
Tuvok—his friendship with Seven could easily take a turn if he underwent Pon Farr.
Tom Paris—as I said, Paris likes the ladies; although he hasn’t looked at Seven that much compared to others, a couple of episodes have suggested the possibility.

Oh, what a tangled web! As I mentioned before, the third and fourth series have much more complicated romantic entanglements than the others. I put this down, in DS9’s case, to the fact that there is a powerful army of reoccurring characters that simply didn’t occur as much in TNG. As for Voyager, they’re all tangled up with each other—no wonder they’re having so many problems.
