Major Kira Nerys was assigned as Bajoran liason officer to Commander Benjamin Sisko when Starfleet took control of Deep Space Nine. Kira had grown up fighting in the Bajoran resistance against their Cardassian oppressors, and thus had a keen knowledge of battle tactics and strategies. Kira disliked Starfleet at first, but soon grew fond of Sisko and the other members of the Starfleet crew. Kira's spirituality was very important to her, especially the Bajoran belief that the aliens that reside in the Bajoran Wormhole are actually gods. Kira also believed, along with most Bajorans, that Sisko was the Emissary to the Prophets. Kira was promoted to Colonel between "Tears of the Prophets" and "Image in the Sand."

Kira's personal life was also very colorful. She has, to date, had relationships with Vedek Bareil (who died), First Minister Shaakar, and Constable Odo. She also occasionally flirts with Gul Dukat, but that's another story....
