Guide to the items: Link's inventory Item Guide

Clothing

Tunics--to switch tunics, go to the pause screen with the tunics and swords pictured. Move the cursor to the correct tunic and press A to equip. This is also how you change swords, shields, and boots.

The Kokiri Tunic--Link's original tunic. It is green in color and has no special use.

The Goron Tunic--can only be worn by Adult Link. It is red, and protects Link from the extreme heat in Death Mountain Crater. You can get it from the little dude who rolls around the third level of Goron City (bomb him), or you can buy one from the Goron Store for 200 Rupees.

The Zora Tunic--can only be worn by Adult Link. It is blue, and allows Link to walk underwater without drowning. King Zora will give it to you if you use Blue Fire (from the Ice Cavern) to thaw him from the red ice. You can also get one from the Zora Store (which you also have to thaw with Blue Fire) for 300 Rupees.

Boots

The Kokiri Boots--Link's original boots. They are the boots you wear most of the time, if you know what's good for you.

The Iron Boots--allow Link to walk underwater (the Zora Tunic is recommended if you use them). You get them from the Ice Cavern, and they are necessary for the Water Temple. They are also useful in other temples, such as when going past the fans in Shadow Temple.

The Hover Boots--allow Link to walk on the surface of water or on thin air for a very short time. They are found in a room in Shadow Temple. You need them to get anywhere in Shadow Temple, and are helpful in other places too.

Items that increase Link's strength

The Goron's Bracelet--make Child Link strong enough to pick up Bomb Flowers. It is given to you by Darunia after you play Saria's Song for him and make him dance.

The Silver Gauntlets--make Adult Link strong enough to push big silver blocks or pick up and throw silver rocks. They are found in Child Link's side of Spirit Temple.

The Golden Gauntlets--make Adult Link strong enough to pick up and throw the big dark pillars with the Gerudo symbols (such as the one blocking the last Great Fairy). They are found in the Shadow Temple portion of Ganon's Castle. They are necessary to complete the Fire and Light portions of Ganon's Castle.

Shields

Deku Shield--you buy this from the Kokiri Store. It is made of wood, so don't use it against an enemy that blows fire. It is useful for Child Link to bounce Deku Nuts back at the Brush Scrubs (spitters).

Hylian Shield--you can buy this from the Market Store (80 Rupees). If you don't want to shell out that much money, go to the graveyard at night (during the day that stupid kid won't let you touch anything) and pull back the tombstone with the flowers in front of it. Inside the grave is a small treasure chest with a Hylian Shield in it (if you blow up the wall behind the chest, the hallway leads to a Fairy Fountain). Use the Hylian Shield against most enemies. When Child Link goes up to the top of Death Mountain to meet the first Great Fairy, use the Hylian Shield to shield him from falling rocks. Child Link can't use this shield to bounce Deku Nuts back at Brush Scrubs, but Adult Link can. Since Adult Link cannot use the Deku Shield, the Hylian Shield becomes his primary defense.
Tombstone with Flowers

Mirror Shield--you find this in Spirit Temple. Only Adult Link can use it. Use it to reflect light to specific places, especially in this temple. It can light up the suns on the walls. It is also the way through the Goddess of the Sand to get to the boss. Use it to reflect Twinrova's attacks, as well as to defend yourself from Ganondorf.

Swords

Kokiri Sword--Link's first sword. You find this sword in Kokiri Forest. Go up the ramp to the area with the maze of short fences. Make your way through here, either by climbing the fences or walking through the maze, and enter the small hole in the wall. Watch out for the rock.

Master Sword--this is the sword that is in the stone beyond the Door of Time. The first time you remove it, Ganondorf catches you and gets ahold of part of the Triforce. After you defeat the Forest Temple, you can replace the Master Sword in the altar to travel back in time. The Master Sword generally does not do as much damage as the Giant's Knife, but you must use it when fighting Phantom Ganon.

Giant's Knife--also called Biggoron's Sword. Getting this is quite complicated. It is not necessary to have this sword to complete the game, but it helps greatly when fighting most enemies. Try to get it as soon as possible after Link grows up.

Biggoron's Sword Trading Sequence:
First, you wake up Talon with the little chicken the lady gives you. Then she will give you a blue chicken. Go to the Lost Woods and turn left. You'll see the guy who used to sit in front of the Kakariko Village tree at night. Wake him up with the blue chicken. He will give you a Poacher's Saw. Take the saw and give it to the grumpy guy in front of the tent in Gerudo Valley. He'll give you a broken Giant's Knife. You can also buy a broken Giant's Knife from Medigoron (you know, the guy who will beeee reeeaaddyy in ssiiixxx or seevvveeen yeearrrs) for 200 Rupees (what's that, you say? It isn't broken? Well, just swing it at a wall or two and you'll find out what I mean). You now have to go to Biggoron (the big Goron at the top of Death Mountain) and talk to him. He says he'll fix the sword, but his eyes hurt. He tells you to get eyedrops from Zora's Domain. Go to King Zora and he gives you a frog (I am assuming that you have already thawed King Zora out; if you have not, do it!). You have to take the frog to the weirdo guy at Lake Hylia in a limited amount of time. DO NOT use the Serenade of Water to warp there; the frog goes bad instantly if you do. You are also unable to use the shortcut, since it is frozen. It helps a lot if you ride the horse. Once you get the frog to the guy, he mixes up the eyedrops, but you have to take them all the way to the top of Death Mountain Crater before they go bad. There are 2 routes you can take: 1) Ride the horse to Kakariko Village. Go up the Goron path. If you planted a bean in front of Dodongo's Cavern, use it to get up to Goron City quickly. Enter the city, and jump down to the lowest level. 2) Alternatively, go to Kokiri Forest, and through the Lost Woods to Goron City (this is much shorter if you know the way off-hand). Now, whichever route you took before this point, go into Big Brother's room (on first level of Goron City) and pull back the statue. This leads to Death Mountain Crater. If you don't have the Goron Tunic, don't worry. You won't be in there long enough to catch fire. Enter the crater and turn right. Go across the bridge, jump to the next ledge, and climb the ladder. Look to your right, and you'll see stairs leading up and out. Follow them. You are now at the top of Death Mountain, so give the eyedrops to Biggoron. He thanks you and promises to repair the sword in a couple of days. Just be patient and come back later to get the Giant's Knife. Once you have it, the Giant's Knife is the best sword of all against most enemies. It causes double the damage that the Master Sword does. However, if you want to be using your shield in a fight, the Giant's Knife is not a good idea. Since it takes two hands to hold the Giant's Knife, Link cannot use both it and the shield at the same time. This also applies to the Megaton Hammer, discussed below.

Other Weapons

Fairy Slingshot--found inside a room in the Deku Tree. This is young Link's primary distance weapon. It uses Deku Seeds for ammunition (they can be found by cutting the grass). The Slingshot is useful for shooting anything from switches to spiders on the wall. It has a longer range than the Boomerang, but a shorter range than the Fairy Bow or Longshot.

Deku Nuts--found by cutting grass. These are useful for stunning enemies temporarily at close range (you need them to defeat Queen Gohma). You can use them to stun Ganon (the last incarnation) from the front, giving you time to get around to his tail.

Deku Sticks--found by cutting grass or breaking pots. They can be set on fire and used to light torches. They can also be swung like a sword, but make a terrible weapon. To conserve your supply of them, once you've used one to light a torch, swing your sword to put the Deku Stick away before it burns up. You can now use it again.

Bombs--found in Dondongo's Cavern. Actually, what you find is the Bomb Bag, which holds 20 bombs. After you get the bag, you can buy bombs from the stores, or find them by cutting the grass. These bombs work the same way as the Bomb Flowers, but now you can carry them with you. If you get a bomb out, it starts blinking, and you have a few seconds to get rid of it before it blows you up. If Link is moving and you press A, he will throw the bomb. If he is standing still when you press A, he just sets the bomb down. Use Bombs to blow up the gold-colored rocks to find holes in the ground and to get into places like Zora's Domain (Bombs won't work on the copper or silver rocks). Also use them whereever you see something suspicious like a crack in a wall or a ring of small rocks.

Bombchus--once you beat Dondongo's Cavern, you can use Bombchus. These are bombs that kind of look like mice. You get one out and set it down, and it runs forward until it hits something or until its time runs out. You can buy Bombchus at the Market at night. They are sold at the store in the back alley that used to be empty (next to the Dog Lady's house). You can also use the Bombchu Bowling Alley. Here, you can win good stuff, like a heart piece, Bombs, Bombchus, the Biggest Bomb Bag (holds 40), or a Purple Rupee. You can carry up to 50 Bombchus with you. However, don't use them all at once. The Bombchu shop eventually sells out of them, and you can't get them by cutting the grass. One of the prizes at the House of Skulltula (once you hit 40) is 10 Bombchus. You will occasionally find small chests with 10 Bombchus in them, and this usually means you will soon need to use them. There is a switch in Ganon's Castle that can only be activated by a Bombchu.

Boomerang--found in Jabu Jabu's belly. The Boomerang is most useful in this dungeon, but it has its uses elsewhere as well. Some enemies can be stunned by the Boomerang (they turn blue if they are stunned). Another very useful thing about the Boomerang is that it can bring things back to Link that would otherwise be out of reach. For example, the Skulltula on the wall of the house in Lon Lon Ranch at night can be killed with the Slingshot, but you can then lock onto the token with the Boomerang and it will bring the token back to Link. You can also do this with the heart piece in the windmill. In this way, the Boomerang is young Link's version of the Hookshot.

Fairy Bow--found in the Forest Temple. Adult Link can't use the Slingshot, so he uses the Bow instead. The Bow can shoot much farther than the Slingshot, and it causes more damage. You can also get three different kinds of magic arrows as the game progresses. The Fire Arrow is obtained by shooting at the rising sun from the stone at Lake Hylia, after the water has filled the lake again (after you've beaten the Water Temple). It sets some things on fire, but is not as useful as you might think. I've actually only found one place where I had to use it (in Shadow Temple). The Ice Arrow is the prize for completing the Gerudo Training Grounds, and has very little value. I don't even think it's necessary to complete the game. The Light Arrow, given to you by Princess Zelda, is a different matter. You need it to defeat Ganondorf.

Hookshot--found in Dampe's grave. This is one of the most widely useful items in the entire game. It is absolutely necessary to complete any one of Adult Link's dungeons, and is very helpful elsewhere as well. It should be able to lock onto anything made of wood (there are a few exceptions) and pull Link up to that object. In Water Temple there is a treasure chest with an extension to the Hookshot in it, making the Longshot. The Longshot can reach nearly as far as an arrow can, and is usually more useful. The Hookshot can kill Big Skulltulas from the front (protected side) in one hit. Some enemies are stunned by the Hookshot, similar to what the Boomerang does. The Hookshot is also the only weapon that you can use under water. This makes it valuable for fighting those man-eating clams in Water Temple. This is one item that I almost always keep out and ready to use, no matter which dungeon I am working on.
Dampe's Grave

Megaton Hammer--found in the Fire Temple. This is pretty useful, though I don't use it as much as the Hookshot. The Hammer does a lot of damage to enemies (I think the same amount as the Giant's Knife). It is, however, slow. Don't use it against quick enemies, use it against big, slow ones that can take a lot of hits. Don't use it in a battle where you need your shield; it takes two hands to use the Hammer, so the shield cannot be used at the same time. The Hammer can also be used to activate rusted switches. If you use if near a Tektite (a red or blue crab thing with one red eye), it flops the critter on its back. You can also use it to break the copper rocks (2 hits).

Other useful items

The Ocarina of Time--given to you by Princess Zelda as she flees from Ganondorf (what Saria gave you earlier is the Fairy Ocarina, which disappears when you get the Ocarina of Time). This item deserves to have the game named after it. Both the Ocarina of Time and the Fairy Ocarina are extremely useful thoughout the game. You learn 12 (or 13) songs to play on the ocarina from various people. Six of these songs are used to warp you to the platforms with the Triforce symbol on them. Below is a list of the songs, where you learn them, and what they are mainly used for.

Saria's Song:
down right left down right left
Learned from Saria when she gives you the Fairy Ocarina on the bridge leading from Kokiri Village to Hyrule Field.
Used for talking to Saria from anywhere, making Darunia dance, getting a heart piece from a Skull Kid, making Mido move, and several other things.

Zelda's Lullaby:
left up right left up right
Learned from Impa after you talk to Zelda for the first time
Used for getting into places such as Zora's Domain or Darunia's room, and wherever else you see that dratted Triforce symbol. You can also play this in front of the gossip clocks to get a pink fairy.

Epona's Song:
up left right up left right
Learned from Malon after you wake up her father.
Used for calling Epona (your horse) to you in Hyrule Field, Gerudo Valley, Lon Lon Ranch, or Lake Hylia. You cannot ride Epona in other places.

The Sun's Song:
right down up right down up
Learned from the Royal Family's Tomb (on the wall in the furthermost room).
Used for changing it from day to night or night to day (depending on what you want), temporarily freezing ReDeads and Gibdos, and getting a heart piece in one of the graves. You can also play it in some places where Navi turns green to get a big pink fairy (restores hearts and magic).

Song of Storms:
A down up A down up
Learned from the guy in the Windmill (when Link is grown up).
Used for draining water from the well (by playing it in the Windmill when Link is a kid), finding secret grottos, and making bean plants grow to get 3 pink fairies. Also can be played in some places when Navi turns green to get a big pink fairy.

Song of Time:
right A down right A down
Learned from Zelda when you retrieve the Ocarina of Time from the moat.
Used for opening the Door of Time and magically moving the big blue blocks with the symbol of time on them. This can also be played in some places where Navi turns green to get a big pink fairy. This song is one of my personal favorites :-)

The Warp Songs....

Minuet of the Forest
A up left right left right
Learned from Sheik when you reach the Sacred Forest Meadow as an adult.
Warps you to: Sacred Forest Meadow.

Bolero of Fire
down A down A right down right down
Learned from Sheik when you first cross the broken bridge in Death Mountain Crater.
Warps you to: Death Mountain Crater.

Serenade of Water
A down right right left
Learned from Sheik when you complete the Ice Cavern (by defeating the big white Wolfos).
Warps you to: Lake Hylia.

Nocturne of Shadow
left right right A left right down
Learned from Sheik the first time you enter Kakariko Village (from the Hyrule Field entrance) after completing Water Temple.
Warps you to: the platform above the upper end of the Graveyard (this song is the absolute only way to get into Shadow Temple).

Requiem of Spirit
A down A right down A
Learned from Sheik after you enter and exit Spirit Temple the first time.
Warps you to: the Desert Colossus (although it is possible to get there without the song, I don't advise it).

Prelude of Light
up right up right left up
Learned from Sheik when you go to the Master Sword's stone after beating Forest Temple.
Warps you to: the Temple of Time.

There is a 13th song in this game. This is the Scarecrow's Song, which you make up yourself, out of any 8 notes you desire. Talk to the Scarecrow closest to the Lake when Link is a kid, and he will let you teach him your song. Come back and play it again for him when you grow up. Now, you can play it in some places where Navi turns green, and the other scarecrow (the wandering one) will pop up. You can lock onto him with your Hookshot, allowing you access to places you counldn't get to before. Examples: the other big room with the rolling rocks in Fire Temple (elevator), ledge in Shadow Temple with hearts and Skulltula, ledge in Spirit Temple next to big statue.

The Magic Spells

Din's Fire--you get this from the Great Fairy near Hyrule Castle. You need a Bomb to blow up the rock. Din's Fire is the orange spell that creates a fireball around Link. It is necessary to use this to get into Shadow Temple.

Farore's Wind--you get this from the Great Fairy at Jabu Jabu's Pond. This is the green spell that you can use to warp to a specific place room. It won't work in the field, only in dungeons.

Nayru's Love--you get this from the Great Fairy at the Desert Colossus. This is the blue spell that protects you from harm for a short time. It uses quite a bit of magic power.

The Lens of Truth--found in the well. This is also called the Eye of Truth. This item is necessary to complete Shadow Temple and is useful elsewhere. It allows you to see holes in the floor that are otherwise hidden. It also allows you to see walls or enemies that are otherwise invisible.

Red Potion

Green Potion
Bottles--there are four of them. They are very useful for carrying recovery potions, pink fairies, fish, bugs, poes, and other things with you. If you keep a pink fairy in a bottle, it will bring you back to life when you die. If you go with the red potion instead, you have to remember to drink it before you die. The four bottles are obtained in the following ways: 1) From Talon after you have woken him up at Hyrule Castle. You play the chicken game (find the 3 special chickens) and he gives you a bottle full of Lon Lon Milk. 2) From the Chicken Lady in Kakariko Village. Find all of her lost chickens and she'll give you an empty bottle. 3) From Lake Hylia. When you are told to find Princess Ruto, take the shortcut from Zora's Domain to Lake Hylia. Near the shortcut is a bottle in the water with a note in it. Take it to King Zora. He keeps the note, you keep the bottle. 4) From the ghost guy. Catch Big Poes (the ones that are yellow after you shoot them instead of purple), and sell them to the guy at the entrance to the old Market. When you've given him 10 of them, he gives you a bottle.
Blue Potion

Silver Diving Scale--play the diving game in Zora's Domain (turn left from the King's chamber and talk to the dude at the top of the waterfall. The first time you win this, you get the Silver Scale. After that, you can still play the game as a fast way of getting more Rupees to fill your wallet. The Silver Scale lets you dive deeper than before. You can now dive deep enough to use the shortcuts from the Lost Woods to Zora's River and from Zora's Domain to Lake Hylia.

Golden Diving Scale--you get this as a prize at the fish pond. The first time you catch a record fish, you get a heart piece. The second time, you get 20 Rupees. The third time, you get the Golden Scale. Now you can dive even deeper. If you dive to the bottom of the pool in Lake Hylia House, the guy gives you a heart piece.

The Bigger Deku Seed Bags--The one that holds 40 seeds you get by scoring 3 100's in a row on the target in the Lost Woods. The 50 seed bag you get by winning the Shooting Gallery as a kid.

The Bigger Bomb Bags--The one that holds 30 bombs is something I can't remember...the one that holds 40 bombs is a prize at the Bombchu Alley.

The Bigger Quivers--The 40 arrow quiver is a prize at the Shooting Gallery when Link is an adult. The 50 arrow quiver is the second prize at the Horseback Archery Range (when you score 1500).

The Masks

You can borrow masks after the Happy Mask Shop opens (after you defeat the Goron dungeon, I think). You sell them, bring the money back, and borrow the next one. Here's the list:

Keeton Mask: sell to the guard at the gate leading to Death Mountain.

Skull Mask: sell to the Skull Kid in the Lost Woods (the one by himself).

Spooky Mask: sell to the kid in the graveyard.

Bunny Hood: sell to the guy who runs around Hyrule Field (he can be hard to catch, but he stops to rest at night on the south side of Lon Lon Ranch).

Mask of Truth: do not sell this or the three masks below; they are free to borrow once you have sold the Bunny Hood. You can only borrow one at a time. Use the Mask of Truth to talk to the Gossip Stones (clocks). Some of the things they say are useful. No, as far as I can tell there's no connection between the Mask of Truth and the Lens of Truth. I may be wrong, though....

Goron Mask: wear in the Forest Stage to get something nice (this also works for the Mask of Truth). To get to the Forest Stage, enter the Lost Woods from Kokiri Village, and take a right, then left, right, left, left. In the room with the tree and the spitters, go over to the far side where butterflies are hovering. There is a hole hidden in the grass, which you should fall into if you walk around in there enough. This is the Forest Stage. Put on the mask and walk forward to the edge of the platform to see the Deku Scrubs' reaction.

Zora Mask: I have yet to find a use for this.

Gerudo Mask: I have yet to find much of a use for this. You can, if you want, wear it around the Market and make people say "Aack! A Gerudo!" Just goes to show that these babes aren't exactly the most popular women around.
