Codes:
CL=only Child Link can get this heart piece
AL=only Adult Link can get this heart piece
B=both Links can get this heart piece (but often with different methods)

Lost Woods:

1) CL From the Skull Kids--Enter the Lost Woods from Kokiri Forest and turn right. Go down the ladder and get on the small stump; two Skull Kids should appear. Show them that you have a Ocarina and they will challenge you to follow 3 different melodies (in 3 sessions). After the first session, they give you a Green Rupee; after the second time they give you a Blue Rupee. The tune gets longer each time, so pay close attention. If you successfully follow them in all three sessions, they will reward you with a heart piece.

2) CL From another Skull Kid--Enter the Lost Woods from Kokiri Forest and turn left. Get on the lower stump and try to talk to the Skull Kid. He will ignore you, because you are a stranger. Play Saria’s Song on your Ocarina and he will realize that you are a friend and give you a Piece of Heart.

Hyrule Field:

3) B From a Business Scrub near the entrance to Lake Hylia--Go to the place on the way to Lake Hylia where there is a patch of ground surrounded by fences. Climb over one of the smaller fences and either plant a bomb in the center of the square or hit that spot with the Megaton Hammer. A round hole appears. Jump down into it and use your shield to bounce the Deku Nut back at the Business Scrub. Talk to him and he’ll sell you a Piece of Heart for only 10 Rupees.

4) B In northwest Hyrule Field--Go to the northwest part of Hyrule Field, where you can see a section of the river just before it heads through a grate toward Gerudo Valley. There is a lone tree on the south side of the river (not the one right next to the river). Next to the tree is a hidden hole in the ground that can be revealed by either a bomb or the Megaton Hammer. Drop down into the hole, kill the Tekite, and either dive or use the Iron Boots to get the heart piece. If you don’t have the iron boots you can use the Golden Diving Scale.

Zora’s River, Domain, and Fountain:

5) B On a high platform along Zora’s River--This is the first of two heart pieces along Zora’s River. If Link is a child, you need to use the chicken to get both this and the heart piece below. For this one, take the chicken and jump across the river. Then walk up on the ledge, jump down to the left side of the river (alongside where the frogs are) and keep going up the river until you get to a ledge. Throw the chicken up first and then climb up. Grab the chicken again before it can fly away and repeat the process. You should now be able to face back down the river and see a long ledge to your left side with a ladder leading up from it. Jump down to that ledge with the chicken. Throw the chicken away and climb the ladder. Now you are up on a high platform. You will notice another chicken (there is a secret grotto and a fairy fountain up here as well, but don’t worry about those now). Get the second chicken and make your way across the small bridge to the small platform. You should be able to see the heart piece, so jump over to it (still with the chicken). If you are willing to wait until Link is an adult to get this heart piece, the process is a little simpler. Just walk along the river and you can climb up on the platform with the ladder. You can also use the magic bean, if it's planted.  Once you’re on top of the high platform, cross the bridge and use the hover boots to get the heart piece.

6) B On a ledge on Zora’s River near the waterfall--Again, if Link is a child, you need to get the chicken. Take it up the river as described previously, but this time, keep going up the river until you get to the waterfall. Now jump off of the high platform on the side of the river to get down to the heart piece. If Link is an adult, you can do the same with the Hover Boots.

7) CL From the frogs (Song of Storms)--Go to the log along the river and go out to the end of it. Get out your Ocarina and five frogs will appear. Play the Song of Storms and they will give you a heart piece.

8) CL From the same frogs (other songs)--This one’s a little more complicated. Now play the other five non-warp songs for the frogs. With each song, one of the frogs gets bigger (just for your information, the purple one responds to Zelda’s Lullaby, gray to Epona’s Song, yellow to Saria’s Song, blue to the Sun’s Song, and pink to the Song of Time). Once all of them are big, they will then challenge you to win the bug game, which is to play the note on the ocarina that corresponds to each frog. Each frog jumps for a different note.  The frogs sit in roughly the arrangement of the ocarina buttons on your controller (blue=A, purple=c-left, yellow=c-down, gray=c-up, and pink=c-right). Tap the buttons as the butterfly appears over the frogs. If you’re not quick enough, you have to start over again. Just be patient and keep trying; eventually you’ll get it!

9) CL In a chest behind the waterfall in Zora’s Domain--You will notice a bunch of dead torches. Go up to King Zora’s chamber and light a Deku Stick. Run down the stairs and light the torch with the large base (this one will stay lit). Now, run along the chain of torches and light them in order. The last two are behind the waterfall. If you do this fast enough (before some of them go out) a large treasure chest containing a Piece of Heart will appear between the 2 torches behind the waterfall.

10) AL In the Ice Cavern--the Ice Cavern entrance is in Zora’s Fountain. You have to hop on the icebergs to get in. Go to the room with the whirling blade; one of the passageways from there leads to the room with the compass’s treasure chest (watch out for the ice bats and the falling icicles). The other chest in the room contains the heart piece.

11) AL On an iceberg in Zora’s Fountain--Hop on the icebergs to get the heart piece, but watch out for the spitting Octoroks. If you fall off of the little icebergs, you have to go all the way back to the big one to get back up.

12) AL At the bottom of Jabu Jabu’s pond--Equip the Iron Boots and let yourself sink to the depths of Zora’s Fountain to find a Piece of Heart (and a lot of Green Rupees). This is too deep to dive to, even with the Golden Scale. Although I recommend the Zora Tunic, Link probably won’t be down there long enough to drown without it.

Death Mountain:

13) B Above the entrance to Dodongo’s Cavern--There are two ways to get this. If you’re going by the book, plant a bean in the plot at the entrance, then, as Adult Link, ride it up to where you can jump off onto the area with the heart piece. But if you just can’t wait that long, there’s another way that both Child and Adult Link can do. Notice that the ledge with the Bomb Flower (the one you used to blow up the rock in front of Dodongo’s Cavern) is almost right above the area with the heart piece. Go up to the Bomb Flower. Notice that the fence next to it is lower than the others around there. Get rid of the Bomb Flower by just throwing it off someplace (it doesn’t matter where), then move to the edge of the cliff, next to the low fence, and face the other way. Now backflip off of the cliff and you should be able to land on the place with the heart piece. It might take a couple of tries to get it right (make sure you’re not on your last heart when you do this, because the fall hurts Link a bit).

14) CL The Goron Bomb Game--Light all of the torches on the lowest level of Goron City (there is a lit torch in Darunia’s room that you can start from). The urn thing will start to move. Go to the second level and try to throw bombs (or bomb flowers) into the urn. Once you do, it will spit out a prize. What the prize is depends on which side of the urn is facing you; when it’s the happy face, you get the Piece of Heart.

15) B In a niche in a wall of Death Mountain Crater--Enter from either the lower entrance (Darunia’s room) or the upper entrance (the owl’s perch and Biggoron’s home). Go to the place where there’s a ring of small stones (with a round hole in the center of the ring). This is the area that the upper entrance opens into. Go to the edge that faces the Bolero of Fire warp platform and climb down to find the niche. Child Link can do this too, but you need to come in from the upper entrance (and work quickly, since you only have a couple of minutes before Link catches on fire). An alternative way to get this heart is to use the same bean that takes you to the top of the volcano cone (see below).

16) AL Floating above a volcano cone in Death Mountain Crater--You have to have beaten Forest Temple and learned the Bolero of Fire to get this one. With a magic bean handy, as a kid, use the Bolero of Fire to warp to the crater. There is a bean plot right next to the warp platform; plant the bean and warp out of there before Link catches on fire (no, you can’t enter Fire Temple as a child, since silver rocks are blocking the way). Now, go forward in time and warp back to the volcano. Ride the bean to the top of the cone and jump off to get the heart piece.

The Market:

17) CL From the Dog Lady--Retrieve the lady’s dog for her and she’ll give you a heart piece. At night, go to the south side of the market (being careful not to attract any of the wrong dogs) to the place under the window with the woman looking out. The white dog there is Richard, the one you want. Walk around in there until you think the dog is following you, then go into the back alley and give the dog back to the lady.

18) CL Bombchu Bowling Alley--One of the prizes for winning this is a heart piece. You can also win a bomb bag upgrade, extra bombs or bomchus, or 50 Rupees.

19) CL The Treasure Chest Game--This game involves a lot of chance, unless you have the Lens of Truth. Use it to see what’s inside the chests before you pick which one to open. It is possible to win this without the Lens of Truth, by noticing that the keys appear in a zigzag pattern after the first couple of rooms.

Kakariko Village and the Graveyard:

20) B In a cage with a cow in Impa's House--You can’t get into the cage from inside the house, so go outside, around to where the chicken pen is, and look up. The irregular doorway leads into the cage, but you can’t get there just by jumping. If Link is a kid, go to the very top of Death Mountain and have the owl take you back down. He will set you down on the roof of the house with the cage. Face the graveyard entrance and walk to the edge. Look down to make sure you’re over the wooden platform and drop down; you can now walk through the door to get the heart piece. If Link is an adult, there are a couple of ways to get the heart, both involving the Hookshot. One way is to simply hookshot your way over to the roof of the house. You can reach the blue roof with the Hookshot from a couple of places: either stand on the fence in front of the windmill, or go to the back door of the potion shop. Once there, you can hookshot over to the other houses.
Another slightly more interesting way requires the Longshot. Get onto the blue roof (with the Longshot, you can do this from the top of the tower). Now, go to the edge of the roof and look up at the windmill; you should see a dark doorway with a small wooden stake. Use the Longshot on the stake to get up there. Climb the stairs and you’ll come across a chicken (if it’s night, the chicken won’t be there). Take the chicken and go up to a higher doorway. You can now jump down to the wooden platform, while getting a great view of the village at the same time.

21) AL From the guy on the blue roof--Use the same method described above to get onto the blue roof. Go and talk to the guy, and he’ll reward you with a heart piece.

22) B House of Skulltula--When you have killed 50 Gold Skulltulas you can get a heart piece. Most people will get this as an adult, but it may be possible to get 50 Skulltulas as a kid.

23) B In the Windmill--There are two ways to get this. If Link’s a kid and has the Boomerang, just throw it at the heart piece and it will come back with your weapon. If you’re not too hot at aiming the Boomerang, you can take the second option, which is to try to get up onto one of the turning wooden platforms and then jump over to the heart piece. Child Link can have a hard time doing this, but Adult Link can get there easily after racing Dampe’s ghost. In this case, you can also use the Hookshot to get over to the heart piece.

24) CL The Heart-Pounding Gravedigging Tour--Dampe the gravekeeper will dig for you at night along the paths of the graveyard. There is a place along the path where he will dig up a heart piece. This one can be very easy, or it can be very tricky. The heart piece is sometimes located in the double patch of dirt in the upper left corner of the graveyard. However, sometimes it isn’t. Go to the graveyard in the daytime and watch the kid. Take note of where he waves his stick; these are good places to have Dampe dig at night. This heart piece takes a lot of patience and often a full wallet.

25) AL On a ledge in the graveyard--Plant a bean and up you go. The heart piece is in the box (you can’t miss it).

26) AL Race Dampe in a minute or less--This is pretty tricky, and you have to hookshot over the abyss near the end of the race to even have a chance. You can’t do it without the Longshot, since the Hookshot won’t reach far enough. When you get to the abyss edge, stop and aim the Longshot at the nearest torch. With enough practice, you should be able to do this quickly enough to win the race in one minute or less.

27) B In a tomb in the graveyard--You need the Sun’s Song (which is found in the Royal Family’s Tomb). Go to the upper end of the graveyard, to the row just below the Composer Brothers and royal family’s tombstones. Facing the windmill, go to the row of graves on the left. The second grave from the middle path is the one to pull back (if you want, just pull back all of the gravestones until you find the one with the tomb). (Take note: this is not the one with the flowers; that is a different story entirely.) Anyway, if Link is a child, you must do this at night or the boy will stop you from pulling back the stone. Drop down into the tomb. There is a ReDead hunched down over by some torches. Go and kill it, using the Sun’s Song if you want. Now, stand between the torches and play the Sun’s Song and a treasure chest containing a Piece of Heart will appear.

Lon Lon Ranch:

28) CL In a hidden room in Lon Lon Ranch--Go to the tower on the far side of the horse field. Inside are a few cows and some boxes. Slide the boxes around until you can get down into the far corner. Crawl through the hole to find the hidden room and the heart piece.

Lake Hylia:

29) AL At the top of the tower on Lake Hylia House--You can use the magic bean to get up to the roof, or you can use the Scarecrow’s Song when Navi flies up to the roof and turns green. Either way, climb the ladder and you get the heart piece.

30) CL Fish Pond--Catch a fish of 6 pounds or more (but not the loach) and show it to the guy; he’ll give you a heart piece.

31) AL Lake Hylia House--Once you have the Golden Diving Scale, dive to the bottom of the pool in the house (you know if you touch bottom because you get a happy musical note). Talk to the guy and he gives you a heart piece.

Gerudo Valley, Gerudo's Fortress, and the Desert Colossus:

32) B Behind the waterfall in Gerudo Valley--If Link’s a child, take the chicken and jump toward the waterfall from the center of the bridge. Stay aimed at the center of the waterfall, and keep pressing forward on the control stick or you might not make it. Keep falling (still holding the chicken) slowly down through the waterfall until you can get into the niche with the Piece of Heart. As Adult Link, there are two ways to do this. Drop down to the ledge far below and get on the magic bean to ride up through the waterfall. If you don’t have the bean planted, you can just go up along the ledge to the waterfall, drop down into the calm water behind the waterfall, and climb up the ladder.

33) B On a ledge in Gerudo Valley--Go to the left of the bridge, where the sign says “no diving” or something. If Link’s a child, get the chicken and jump down to the ledge with the box; inside the box is the heart piece. If Link’s an adult and has the Hookshot, drop down to the ledge with the silver rock, then hookshot to the box.

34) AL In a treasure chest on top of the Thieves’ Hideout--You can hookshot to this chest from several locations; from some of them you need to use the Longshot. If you have the Scarecrow’s Song, here’s a route you can use with the Hookshot: from the room with the 2 Gerudos and the boiling pot, cross to the far side and go out the door. Go to Link’s left, and climb up the ledge. Walk on that roof to where you can jump onto another roof that is slightly lower. From here, climb vines up to the top (don’t go too close to the edge or you’ll get caught by one of the guards below). Once you’re on the top, go as close as you can to the chest, and note that Navi will fly over to the other side of the gap and turn green. Play the Scarecrow’s Song and hookshot over to the Scarecrow when he appears. With the Longshot, you can reach the chest itself from here. Another place you can use to reach the chest is from the ledge above the prison cell.

35) AL Horseback Archery Range--Score 1000 or more points and you get a heart piece. Score 1500 or more and you get a quiver upgrade.

36) AL The giant arch in front of Spirit Temple--As Child Link, and with a bean handy, warp to the Desert Colossus with the Requiem of Spirit. As an adult, return there and ride the bean around the Colossus until you can jump off onto the arch. Be sure to get the Skulltula too; it’s along the bean’s route at night.
