The Enemies and their Weaknesses The Enemies and their Weaknesses

Here, you'll find most of the enemies that Link will encounter in his travels through Hyrule. Some are easy to defeat, while others can take a few more hits. Read below to find the enemies and the best ways that I've found to deal with them. I've organized them by area, with the Temples and Dungeons of each area included.

Kokiri Forest and the Lost Woods

At the beginning of the game, Kokiri Forest is the most peaceful part of Hyrule (though after 7 years of Ganondorf's control, even it is full of enemies). The first enemy that you're likely to encounter is the Brush Scrub, which I always call a "Spitter." This is because that is precisely what they do: pop up out of the ground and spit Deku Nuts at Link. If you have a shield, equip it and use it to bounce the Deku Nuts back at them. Depending on the kind of Spitter you've hit, it will either stand up, in which case you can go and buy something from them, or run away, in which case you can go kill them. They won't spit at you again until they get back to their little patch on the ground.

The Deku Baba are the things that look like big flowers that lunge forward to attack Link. Simply attack them with your sword a couple of times. Depending on how you attack, you will either get three Deku Nuts or a Deku Stick as a reward.

The Skulltulas, which are basically big spiders, are an enemy found in the Deku Tree, but also all over Hyrule. There are three main types of Skulltulas: the Big Skulltulas, the Skullwalltulas, and the Gold Skulltulas. The Big Skulltulas, which hang near the ceiling and drop down on their threads to attack, can be killed with the Slingshot (or Arrows or Hookshot, if Link is an adult). However, you have to be able to aim at their underside, which is unprotected. Another way to deal with them is to walk up to where they come down to get you and hit them once with your sword. They will turn around in a minute, and you can hit them again, this time causing damage. You have to do this a couple of times. The Skullwalltulas are generally the ones you'll see on the walls that Link can climb up. You can kill them with the Slingshot easily. Don't climb the walls until you've killed all of them, or you will be knocked back down. The Gold Skulltulas are the spiders with the gold backs that just turn around in place on the walls. These are very rare, and also very valuable. Kill all of them that you can find, and be sure to pick up the Gold Skull Token that remains when they die. Eventually, you will be rewarded for killing them....

Queen Gohma (boss of the Deku Tree) is not that hard to kill. Just make sure you have plenty of Deku Nuts and go to meet her. When she appears, throw one of the nuts at her and she will be stunned. Hit her as many times as you can with your sword before she wakes up again and backs away. She will climb to the ceiling and lay 3 eggs, which drop to the floor--go and kill them before they hatch and you won't have to deal with her children. If you don't kill them before they hatch, just cut them down with your sword, then prepare to meet Queen Gohma again! Stun her again and keep repeating the whole process several times until she is defeated.

At the entrance to the Sacred Forest Meadow, you will encounter a Wolfos, basically (surprise) a big mean wolf. Just keep a Z-target lock on him and stab with your sword. Use your shield to defend. If you're not the sword fighting type, back off and shoot him with the Fairy Slingshot. The Boomerang, Hookshot, and Fairy Bow work on these as well, if you happen to have them. You will find more Wolfos later in the Forest Temple, and there is one in a hidden hole near the place where you found the first one (if you have the Stone of Agony and a Rumble Pak, you can find it easily and blow it up).

When Link is an adult, and tries to go to the Forest Temple for the first time, he will discover that the guards are no longer those wimpy spitters. Now, huge brutes with battle axes patroll the maze. Don't try to slash them with the sword. Either bomb them or sneak past. If you have them to spare, Bombchus work quite well. If the brutes see you, they grunt angrily and charge Link, ramming him into the wall (or water). When you get around to the last walkway, there is a brute with a huge club. It takes more than one Bombchu to kill him. You can run toward him and get past him if you keep out of the path of the club. After the first time getting past these guys, you can use the Minuet of the Forest to return to the Forest Temple. You may still have to get past Mr. Big Club though, if you don't have another warp song.

Inside the Forest Temple, you will find flaming skulls that bounce around trying to catch Link on fire. They can be annoying, but are easy to deal with. Use the Hylian Shield to hit them. This puts out the fire, so you can hit them with your sword. Depending on which sword you use, you may have to hit them several times.

Hyrule Field

When Link is a kid, the main enemies in Hyrule Field are the Stal Kids, and they only come out at night. To avoid them, walk on the paths or wear one of the masks from the shop. If you'd rather fight, it takes two hits with the sword to kill each one. They always appear two at a time. I have heard that if you kill about 15 of these creeps, a giant skeleton appears. Shades of Majora's Mask, I say.... Anyway, I haven't tried the Slingshot or Boomerang on them, because they're so easy to kill with the sword. But if you take my advice, just avoid them most of the time (side-step them when they appear). It is just time-consuming when you try to kill every one of them that appears. The Stal Kids do not appear when Link is an adult.

As an adult, Link will find ghosts, called Poes, in the field. They appear at both day and night, in specific places. There are two colors found in the field: purple and gold. The purple ones are smaller, and appear when Link is on foot. They will sometimes fly ahead of Link, dropping spurts of flame in his path. Just avoid these. Sometimes, the purple Poes will fly around Link in a circle. If they do this, just get out your Hookshot and hit them twice (this also works with the bow, but why waste the arrows?). When you have defeated the Poe, it will turn into a purple flame with a frowning face. If you have an empty bottle, you can catch it. You can drink this if you want--sometimes it gives you hearts, and other times it takes hearts away. You can also sell these to the guy at the entrance to the Market, for only 10 Rupees.

The other kind of Poe is a Big Poe. These are bigger and faster--you will probably know them when you see them because they rapidly fly away from you. To kill these guys, I recommend riding Epona and shooting them with the bow. It takes two hits to kill each one, and probably a few tries to be successful. There are a total of 10 Big Poes in the game, all in Hyrule Field. After you kill each one, be sure to have an empty bottle handy and approach the gold flame (these ones have smiling faces) that appears. Catch the Poe and sell it to the guy at the Market. This time, he gives you 50 Rupees and 100 points on your card. Once you have done this 10 times, he gives you another empty bottle (well worth it, believe me).
