Weather Lab

Welcome to the weather lab. You will answer all of your questions on a seperate sheet of paper or the answer sheet provided. This investigation will be due two days from the day you start. When you work on these questions write down the date. If you finish on one day and start the next please make it on your paper. You must do this because the weather changes everyday. I will look back at the weather for the days that you worked on this assignment to assure accuracy.

  1. Differentiate between weather and climate.
  2. Describe a cold front and a warm front. Include the symbols in your response.
  3. Differentiate between a low pressure and a high pressure system.
  4. Condensation causes water droplets to form in your bathroom on the cooler mirror. How is this similar to a low pressure system meeting up with a cold front?
  5. Looking a the weather map here please tell me what type of front is near New York?(you might want to enlarge the map to see it better)
  6. What type of weather do we have outside right now? Does this match the map above?
  7. Which direction do the fronts usually move (east to west or west to east)? Look at these two maps to try to help you figure this out.
  8. Using the map below: What type of pressure system is attached to the fronts?
  9. What type of weather are they having with this type of pressure?
  10. Using the map below. What type of weather is being expected for California?

  11. Look at page 165 in your green book. Meteorologists use field maps to help predict the weather. Lines of equal temperature or pressure are called isolines. Using the field map , tell me what the temperature would be at points A, B, C and D.
  12. Try making your own with this page. Make sure to copy the correct results on to your answer sheet.(This is an actual page from a pilot train course.)
  13. What is a hurricane?
  14. What are the 4 ingredients for a hurricane?
  15. Sometimes a hurricane can be off in the distance and provide great surf for people at the beach. Try your skills to make the “perfect storm” for surfing on this page. Once you have tried this mini activity please write down the perfect conditions for surfing.
  16. Have you ever wondered what the weather might be like on other planets? Go to the Planet Storm web page. You are going to look at the weather on other planets in our solar system. Please complete the chart on your answer sheet.
  17. Take the quiz based on the information you just read. Print a copy of your grade and turn this copy in to Ms. Schlott.
No matter what type of weather you are talking about density plays a large role. Please read the paragraph below and answer the questions based on the reading.
