Introductory Medical Notes, Acting CMO, USS Voyager, EMH AK-1:
I have examined Sara Thompson at the request of Captain Janeway upon her ‘discovery’ of being aboard the Federation Starship Voyager. Though she had in fact come aboard with Commander Chakotay and the survivors of his Maquis crew, she had remained alone for a period of three weeks, living on ration bars for sustenance as she had no replicator rations nor the knowledge of Mr. Neelix’s self-styled galley.
My findings are as follows:
**Highly intelligent, with an IQ that cannot be measured, iditic memory, and above-average hand-eye coordination.
**Telepathic and Empathic powers, as well as Psychokinetic abilities. These abilities are present but unexplainable, as Humans are not known to be telepathic by nature.
**Malnourishment, expected after three weeks of nothing but ration bars. Dehydration, however, has not been found, leading me to suspect that she has had some survival training in the past, or at least the common sense to drink plenty of fluids.
**A large area on her body has been found to contain scar tissue, layers upon layers extending past the subdermal regions and in some places into the muscles. Concentration is on the back side of the upper torso, with scarring also present on the legs.
**Numerous old, untreated injuries were found in her bone structure. From the scans I have already run, Ms. Thompson has suffered numerous greenstick fractures to every extremity of her body, as well as pulled muscles and torn ligaments to the joints. Shoulders, knees, ankles, and wrists appear to have been violently torn from place and then reset, by whom I do not know as I have no access to any medical records from the Alpha Quadrant. However, if I were to venture personal opinion, it would be one of child abuse.
**Psychological profile shows normal activity, an amazing feat for one born telepathic. It is my conclusion that either she had others to help her through the period of incomprehension faced during early life, or special schooling.
**Development well below average. At present her weight is barely 38.6 kilos (roughly 85 pounds), and her height less than 1.5 meters. As she is still in adolescence, it is hoped that she will grow, though what can be extrapolated from present calculations is not promising.
Ms. Thompson is a highly intellegent, telepathic human adolescent. At the age of 14 she could quite possibly process and heed more information than someone twice her age. Given her present state of mind, she is qualified for perhaps any position she would so choose aboard this ship, and presents no danger to herself or to others, despite the abilities that unnerve so many.
I have chosen to grant a field commission for Sara Elizabeth Ann Thompson establishing her at the rank of Acting Ensign, giving her all rights and priveleges thereto, in addition to granting her all priveleges normally held by those of my crew. Let this record reflect as such. She is responsible for herself, and will not be placed under any special guardianship to any one crew member.
I must now at this time voice my reservations officially. Despite this, I have granted the commission. I will give Acting Ensign Thompson the benefit of the doubt. Her age is not sufficient to warrant even the most heavily supervised training mission into deep space, and yet she finds herself here with the rest of us, 70,000 light years away from her home, in her case the Maquis vessel destroyed during the battle with the Kazon-Ogla.
I have read the report filed by the doctor, and after examining his findings in more detail, there can be no doubt as to her history of abuse. I am attempting to shuffle through database findings as far back as before her year of birth, to find out more about her.
Commander Chakotay is perhaps her greatest advocate, persuading me that looks are not all they seem to be, and underneath her barely meter and a half exterior she is tougher than titanium. Integration with the already Starfleet-trained crew of the USS Voyager may prove to be a challenge for her, yet from the doctor’s report, it would not be her toughest yet faced in her 14 years.
Lt. Torres has requested Ensign Thompson’s presence in Engineering. She shall be assigned there permanently. Let this record reflect my regret at the simple fact that, at the age of 14, Ensign Thompson’s childhood will probably now be ended. She shall be given every opportunity to complete an equivalent of what schooling could have offered her, however the Delta Quadrant is simply no place for children aboard a starship. Therefore it is up to her to integrate herself successfully as a member of this crew.
CROSS-EXCERPT, related file, Captain Kathryn Janeway, personal log
I must confess now unofficially what I only hours ago confessed in Sara’s file – I have reservations about her serving aboard this ship. I know that I didn’t have to grant her the rank of Ensign, and perhaps I shouldn’t have, but it seemed the logical thing to do – Chakotay tells me that there’s more to her than meets the eye, and if the doctor’s report is anything to be believed, it isn’t just the scar tissue that cuts through her skin. I don’t think I can admit to myself that it’s because she’s a telepath – and that alone leaves me wondering. Why does it bother me so much that she is what she is? That she is something that she had no choice in being? Kes has telepathic abilities. Tuvok is one of the finest Starfleet officers I’ve ever known, and a great friend – and Vulcans are telepathic. I’ve served with countless Betazoids…what is it about this one small girl that has the ability to read my mind, sense my emotions, and lift objects through the air with a thought that makes me so nervous?
File Update: Delta Quadrant Addendum
Report by Cmdr. Chakotay, First Officer, U.S.S. Voyager (Stardate 48579.4)
I first met Ensign Thompson when she appeared on my vessel during my tenure in the Maquis. Though small and slight, her size was not a disadvantage but her greatest asset, enabling her to complete repairs in parts of the ship inaccessable to others. Her telepathy is still a mystery to us all, as well as much of her past life, though from what I have garnered it was not a pleasant one.
It took difficulty to convince the Captain that she was suited for a position in Engineering, and despite Lt. Torres’ wishes to have her there, more time will most likely be needed to integrate her within the crew, as word travels faster than warp speed on this ship and news of her telepathy was not the most welcome to anyone.
Her intelligence and fast thinking are another asset, as well as her memory. The Ensign is capable of, as stated by the doctor, reciting from memory things that have only been given the barest of glances. I can only hope that she will have the time and wisdom to make use of her talents in serving this ship and its crew.
