Megatron, supreme commander of the criminal Predacon forces on prehistoric Earth and all-around mean guy, may have been preparing his entire life to capture the Maximal golden disk, a relic pinpointing the location of a planet laden with energon.Megatron Beast Mode  After assembling a team and stealing the disk, he and his crew escaped Cybertron space and nearly all repercussions. However, as in many times to come, luck was not on their side, and they were pursued through time and space by a Maximal ship - the Axalon. After a transwarp leap, the two ships opened fire on each other and crash landed on an unidentified planet laden with energon - so much energon, in fact, that both crews had to select beast forms to protect themselves from the dangerous radiation of its unstable form. Megatron's crew were reborn as Scorponok, Tarantulas, Terrorsaur, Waspinator and Dinobot, and Megatron himself took the form of a tyrannosaurus. Dinobot soon questioned Megatron's skills as a leader and was relieved of duty. He soon turned up in the Maximal ranks, evening the odds at five against five. Megatron, of course, wasted no time in attempting to defeat the Maximals and take the planet's wealth of energon for himself.

Despite many devious and cunning plans, Megatron seemed unable to reach any lasting victory for quite some time.Megatron Robot Mode  However, his luck soon returned, in the form of a second golden disk, this one of alien manufacture. Using the information on this disk, Megatron was able to predict the aliens's next move and plan accordingly. After an alien construct appeared, scanned Optimus Primal, and began a termination sequence designed to rid the planet of all life, Megatron had only to sit back and let events unfold. Optimus Primal piloted a modified stasis pod to destroy one of the planet's moons, now transformed into an alien weapon, and Megatron seized the opportunity by hacking into the pod's computer systems and sealing the pod's hatch, thereby preventing Optimus Primal from escaping after he set the transwarp cells to explode. Although Primal succeeded in destroying the weapon and saving all life on the planet, he was killed.

In the wake of the destruction of the alien weapon, a quantum surge washed over the planet, altering the structures of some of the 'bots, making a new, more powerful form of Beast Warrior: the Transmetal. Megatron was among those changed and found his new form to be quite powerful and quite to his liking. He again wasted no time and led an assault, despite inferior numbers, against the Maximals, now without a commander or base defenses. Although the Predacons were eventually driven back, they did provide time for their troops trapped inside the Axalon to escape, and it was not long before they launched another attack, with the aid of two new 'bots, the Fuzors Quickstrike and Silverbolt. Megatron nearly saw victory with this assault, disabling the Maximals nearly entirely, only to be driven back once again - this time by the newly reborn Optimus Primal and the traitor Silverbolt.

Megatron soon realized that he would have to take more drastic action than merely trying to destroy the Maximals and gain vast supplies of energon. His schemes got more elaborate, his resolve stronger, and his actions more ruthless. After determining that the future could be altered from the past, and that the original, human-made golden disk would change accordingly, Megatron embarked on perhaps the cruellest of all his endeavors: slaughtering the ancestors of all humans. He believed it had been human interference that had kept the Decepticons from defeating the Autobots, and he determined to stop them long before they started. He nearly succeeded, and would have, if not for the traitor Dinobot, who single-handedly fought the Predacons to a standstill long enough for the other Maximals to arrive. Although Dinobot went off-line permanently, Megatron still considered it a loss, and it perhaps betrayed his ultimate plan.

It was not long before Megatron enacted this plan. With the assistance of Ravage, a Decepticon rebuilt as a Predacon and sent to Earth to capture Megatron, Megatron was able to break into the Ark, resting place of the Autobots on prehistoric Earth and fulfill what had been the dream of nearly every Decepticon: destroy Optimus Prime. A time storm raged, altering all time to come, and victory finally seemed to be Megatron's. However, he was again foiled by Optimus Primal, who took Optimus Prime's spark into himself to prevent it from going off-line. Megatron quickly made his escape and achieved a small victory in the end: the destruction of the Axalon. After Optimus Prime's body was restored, Primal returned his spark, and the Maximals took up residence near the Ark.

Megatron soon fell back onto his usual scheming, though his plans were often more ruthless and cunning than ever before. He eventually regained access to the Ark and took the opportunity to repeat the process that created "Optimal Optimus", this time taking the original Megatron's spark into himself and emerging Transmetal II dragon, now more powerful than ever. He and his troops were removed from the Ark again, but Megatron continues to develop his plans and continues to take every possible opportunity in his quest for ultimate power.
