pstairs, Tonar surveys the paths open to him; the tapestries here are more restful, showing riverfish and twining riverweeds amid artfully arranged bubbles. Before Tonar is a long corridor leading between two symmetrical rows of doors. There appear to be no locks, but presumably there are latches on the inside, as with other guesthouses he has visited on his journey through Avrezin. The upper half of each door is obscured by a hanging curtain, made of wooden beads. Closer inspection reveals that each bead has been hand-carved with intricate designs--religious symbols, perhaps, the old script [GM's note: ideographs] used by Avrezin's priests.

At the far end of the corridor, someone--with her back to Tonar--is looking out the window and singing wordlessly to herself. Despite the custom of leaving weapons at the door, there is a sword sheathed at her side. She is dressed in loose robes and wears a gold-trimmed red sash: the warlord's colors, not Moruhan's colors.

From other rooms Tonar hears snores, what sounds like a quarrel over what color to wear to the Festival of the Bridge of Stars in four nights, and the occasional restless footsteps.

Meanwhile, Tonar hears what seems like the soldier and the serving girl from the 3rd door down to the left. The soldier's voice is almost a purr, the girl's voice a bit shaky, but their words are indistinct through the door.

Hmm, Tonar ponders the likelihood that the singing girl is backup to the soldier. The soldier he could handle, but a unknown at his back is annoying. Oh well, he knows one quick way to find out. Tonar slams his right palm against the 3rd door and bellows, "Don't you know diseased meat when you see it, man?"

His left hand could be thought to be on his hip, but it actually finds the handle of a small hunting knife. Not enough room here to wield Deathbringer effectively.
