Kathleen's Mistake

Part 8

Michael stood to his feet and walked out of the room.

"God dammit! Have you heard anything I told you, you stupid woman?!"

Maria shouted, her arms flaring everywhere. Kathleen was suddenly reminded of when she first saw the girl.

"Maria, calm down please."

"No! I will not calm down. I am NOT telling you why I am here. Michael is NOT going to even talk to you now. You don't just get to know people by asking them why their in a crazy house. Just know that they are. Just know that they're crazy. Have all these other's stories not told you that their crazy?"

"Maria, none of them are crazy, most are just abused."

"Most. But you'll admit it huh? Some of them are crazy."

"Were crazy. They told their story, they're on their way to recovery."

"Well, I don't want to recover. I'm fine the way I am."

"You want to live the way your living for the rest of your life?"

"No, I actually intend on letting my pain bubble in my brain a little more, than I'll really loose it. Maybe do like some of them, try and kill myself, although I think that's a cowards way out, but hey, my pain will be all I can see then. So, who cares? I won't. No one really will."

Isabel inhaled deeply.

"Won't Michael?"

She asked, keeping her head down, she knew she shouldn't interfere, she just had to though, Maria had a good man. He really loved her. Everyone who knew them could tell that.

"No, he won't. You wanna know why? Cause he'll be there with me, letting all his pain blind him and letting his fury take over his body. You think what I said only applied to me? I can just bout garentee that Michael will do the same thing."

Kathleen stood to her feet. It was one thing for Maria to say she'd waste her life, but try and garentee that another would too, that was wrong.

"Will he? I have a feeling he won't."

"Oh wow! You have a feeling! I have lots of feelings. He will do the same thing. You wanna know why?"

"Why?"

"Because Michael, he told me something, he told me that if I was ever to do anything that could be classified lower on the rictor scale of being crazy, he'd follow me. Just like I told him I'd do the same thing. Michael is my life. I'm his. Them, their on they're on their way to recovery, I'm happy for them, really I am, but their is no recovery for me, and if there's no recovery for me, then there is no recovery for Michael."

Maria turned on her heels and stormed from the room. Leaving a very unsatisfied Kathleen in her wake.

"She's right. They minas well be one. They won't let each other go and they are to stubborn to try to get better. They had something in their life I guess that made them that way. Maria's been in a mental ward the longest. There are rumors, but no one listens to them."

Kathleen turned and looked at Max.

"Rumors?"

"Yea."

"About who?"

"Maria."

"There are rumors?"

"Yes."

"Do you think you could tell them to me?"

"Why, rumors aren't true?"

Kathleen sighed and sat back down into her seat.

"No, but rumors have one thing in common. Something had to make them seem real, and at the moment, I would like to find out anything and everything I can about Maria, because, perhaps one of those rumors are close to the truth, maybe they'll help me get to her."

Max and the other's only nodded.

"Well, there is the one about how she tried to kill her father. When she was only seven."

"I thought it was her mother?"

Alex asked, interupting Max.

"Maybe it was, maybe it was both of them? Anyway, they say that, cause that's about the time she was admited, or at least that's around the time the stories like begin and stuff."

"See, all rumors start somewhere."

Kathleen said nodding. She began to do the mental math. 16 subtract 7 is 9. 9 years in a crazy house.

"They also say that she's tried to kill a few guards who tried to touch her when she first arrived in the mental ward. They said she had purple and blue skin, dry blood covering parts of her body and she wouldn't let anyone touch her. It's said that the dry blood on her clothes was her parents."

Kathleen nodded, listening intently. She'd have to go into the files on this one. She'd hope she didn't have to, she didn't like the doctors perspective on anything and besides it would take her months to get the files.

"There's also a rumor that says she tried to kill one of her room mates, who then mysteresly ended up dead. I think the time frame for that one was when she was 10."

Kathleen nodded. There were a lot of rumors of Maria killing people.

"Oh, and then there's this one that says that when she was like 12 she just stopped eating and drinking and talking and stuff, all she did was scream. They thought she was autistic for a while, then she met Michael."

Kathleen nodded. Interesting.

"That's the rumor of why her and Michael are so close. Although I think it's a little exaggerated myself."

"Hey, don't forget the one about when they said she escaped from her room and somehow made it into Michael room for three days without anyone knowing."

Isabel said reminding her brother.

"Hey that one's true, I was there for that one."

Alex said, putting in his two cents worth. Kathleen only nodded. Maybe Maria had a point about Michael and her.

Suddenly Tess gasped and everyone turned around to see Michael standing in the door frame.

"She's hears this conversation and you all better sleep with one eye open at night. I thought you knew she didn't like to be talked about. You'd think you'd know that after all those stories."

Kathleen only stared at the boy before her. That was the most he'd said to her.

"What is it that you came back here for?"

Michael walked over and sat into his seat on the loveseat, without Maria by his side.

"Maria sent me."

"She did?"

Kathleen asked, confused.

"Yea, she told me that I should come down here and speak."

"Speak?"

"Yea."

"What do you mean?"

"I mean that Maria wants me to tell you why I'm here."

Kathleen only nodded, slightly amazed. Maria sent him? Why would she do that? After her huge outburst especially.

"She told me some things, screamed a little. You never mentioned that the rooms were sound proof."

Michael said, cocking a smirk.

"I didn't know they were."

"Well, they are. Another reason to not to let her hear you talk about her, if you know what I mean."

Everyone nodded. Kathleen, turned and looked up the stairs.

"She's still there. She's waiting for me to be finished so she can come tell you she wants to leave. Don't let her leave, please."

Michael said staring at Kathleen intently. Kathleen only nodded.

"She's not leaving here. This is her new placement, she can't just turn away, pack up and leave, this place doesn't work that way."

"Well, good, cause she'd really leave if she could. She's not going to talk, it's gonna take a lot to make her talk."

"Well, I'm glad your willing to tell us your story."

"I'm not willing, I'm just not stupid. I am never going against the words of Luka."

Kathleen's ears perked up.

"What did you say?"

"What?"

Michael asked, surprised at Kathleens sudden interest.

"You said you'd never go against the words of Luka, whose Luka?"

"Maria. Her name's Maria DeLuca. Her nickname used to be Luka."

Kathleen only nodded. She'd heard that name before. When she'd come back from college for a small break, she was staying with her widowed mother in a small apartment and she remembered hearing voices always screaming that out, she'd always assumed it was a dog. Her mother always told her not to worry about it, it wasn't her business.

"Why?"

"No reason."

"Oh, okay, so where do I just start?"

"The beginnings fine."

Michael nodded, cast one look up at the staircase and began to speak.
