Kathleen's discovery

Part 10

Maria's entire body tensed up.

"A mental ward."

"No, before that, when you were younger."

"I lived in Roswell."

"Where in Roswell?"

"In a home, like everyone else. What's it matter to you anyway?"

"Maria, please."

"Look, I lived with my mother and father in an apartment building in the coulda-been-better neighborhood, similar to Kyle's experience. The building was run down and a piece of shit. There were like four other apartments occupied, the rest were vacancies."

Kathleen nodded. She needed to get Maria's files, since Maria wasn't willing to give any other information on it.

The weeks passed, and Maria helped Kathleen get the others better. They were all doing well, everyone but Maria. She seemed to stay exactly the same. The same guarded personality. Same bitter tongue. The same person all together. Although Kathleen had a feeling that she'd seen Maria before. That she'd known her from somewhere. She just, she just couldn't figure it out. The name Luka though, it was very familiar to her.

"So, Kathy, where do want me to put all these boxes?"

Kathleen looked up from her reports and noticed Alex standing with two boxes pilled in his arms.

"Oh, just set them anywhere in here. That'll be fine Alex, thanks."

Alex smiled and nodded.

"No prob, call me if you need anything."

Kathleen nodded. She really liked having the eight kids around. They made her feel sane. They also made her feel like she had a purpose. That they were why she was set on earth, so she could make them all better and let them free. She wanted more than anything to see those kids free. Even Maria.

She stood from her seat and walked over to the first box. They finall came, it'd taken them long enough to get here, but they were finally here. Kathleen opened the box and hurriedly searched for the one file that she needed. Running her fingers over the long stack of files, she finally found it. HOME AND FAMILY.

She smiled, pulling it from the box, she sat there on the floor looking through it. Reading each person's little report, finally she got to the one she wanted. MARIA R. DELUCA. She set it down and began to run her eyes over it. They finally stopped on what she needed.

MARIA R. ROSE - Address - 546 Hobles Drive. APT. #12

Kathleen stared in absolute terror at the words before her. God, this coudn't be, could it. She sat remembering the calls, the noises from the apartment somewhere above her mother's. Listening to a man and woman screams and then hearing a pet name they used as they screamed at what she had assumed was a dog when they yelled. Luka. She knew she'd seen Maria somewhere.

She would see the faint face of a small blonde as she walked, either in or out with a man or a woman. Never alone and never with anyone else. She always looked like she had fallen and hurt herself. She was training to be a damn child counsler/psychologist, she should have seen the signs. They were there, flashing loud and clear. Oh God, she thought to herself. She stood to her feet and made her way out of the room.

She looked frantically from room to room, searching for the one person she needed to see. She could hear the faint whispers of Isabel asking if she was okay, and Alex suggesting that maybe she sit down, perhaps she was working to hard. She keep on her way though. She finally stopped in the kitchen, where she saw Maria standing, cutting potatoes for their dinner that night.

She walked, more of stumbled, her way over to Maria. Maria turned to face her, a frightened look on her face.

"Kathleen are...are you okay? You look like you've just seen a ghost."

Suddenly Maria felt Kathleen's arms wrap around her and Kathleen's sobs into her shooulder. Maria gently hugged her back.

"Um, it's okay Kath, you can't save em all."

Maria whispered gently into Kathleen's hair. Kathleen suddenly jumped back and stared at Maria intently, the tears still coarsing down her cheeks.

"But I coulda....I coulda saved you."

Maria only shook her head, a small sad smile on her face.

"No, no you coudn't. No one coulda saved me Kath, no one. I'm just one of those cases."

Kathleen shook her head rapidly.

"No you are not...Luka."

Maria's eyes bulged from their sockets and her breathe stopped. Her eyes misted up rapidly and she wiped them furosiously.

"Where...where did you hear that name?"

Kathleen took in a deep breathe.

"From you mother and father, at nights. During the day. All the time Maria. All the time I was there with my mother. I never knew, I should've known. I should've saved you."

Maria smiled sadly.

"I thought you looked familiar. Guess you have seen a ghost of sorts huh?"

Maria said breathing in a deep breathe.

"You knew her?"

Maria and Kathleen both turned to see seven other figures standing in the doorway. Michael had asked the question, aiming it at whoever would answer it.

Kathleen nodded.

"She lived in my mother's apartment complex. I'd seen her once or twice, heard the noises at night, during the day, I always thought they were screaming at a dog."

Kathleen laughed sadly.

"God, I wished it'd been a dog."

"I don't."

Maria said firmly. Kathleen turned to face her, in shock.

"What?"

"If it'd been a dog, who knows how they'd of treated me."

Maria said, cracking a smirk.

"So, Maria, you gonna tell us why your here?"

Isabel asked, a small smile on her face. Something that would have been rare no less than six weeks ago. Because, this smile was real.

"Well, doc here already knows, so I minas well."

"Good, I wanna know why you're crazy."

Kyle said with a wink. Maria smirked back and rolled her eyes. The all assembled themselves in the living room.

Maria sat down on the floor. She breathed in deeply.

"I guess I'll start from the beginning. They used to have a name for me....it wasn't Maria...my name was Luka...
