There are two types of scars: the visible and the invisible.
Everyone knows about Viggo's visible scar. It lies just above his lip, the result of youthful bravado mixed with alcohol and barbed wire. Everyone knows about Orlando's visible scar. It runs in a line down his lower back, the result of youthful bravado mixed with a drainpipe and an annoying thing called gravity.
Those visible scars are fodder for articles in magazines and slash stories online. They tell stories -- one insignificant, one significant -- that are small chapters in the annals of a lifetime. They seem to give their bearers more so-called character than they already have. They reflect broken skin and strong spirits.
Orlando has run his lips and fingers over Viggo's visible scar countless times. Viggo has done the same to Orlando's. In dark rooms and tangled sheets, they kiss and stroke the scar tissue that decorates beloved features. But they know that those scars aren't the ones that need the attention.
Only Orlando has ever seen Viggo's invisible scars. They're buried deep inside, the result of everything from a failed marriage to relentless perfectionism. Only Viggo has ever seen Orlando's invisible scars. They're buried deep inside, the result of everything from a parent's death to a lack of self-confidence.
Those invisible scars are never talked about in interviews. They don't receive treatment from psychiatrists or pharmacologists. They remain far beneath the surface, each of them an unmistakable groove on their bearer's internal makeup. They can sometimes break their bearers down, but often only spur them to move forward.
Orlando has given Viggo comfort from his invisible scars countless times. Viggo has done the same for Orlando. In dark rooms and tangled sheets, they talk about the invisible scars that mar both of them. Those are the scars that need the attention.
Those are the scars that they work to heal.
