Friday the 13th (1980)

"Doomed... you're all doomed." -Crazy Ralph

This is another one of my personal favorites! Friday the 13th opens with a teenage girl who is on her way to Camp Crystal Lake, or as the locals call it, "Camp Blood". She finds a nice old trucker to give her a ride about halfway there, and he drops her off. She then comes across a person in a blue jeep. We never see this person's face, we only see the girl from the driver's point of view. The driver then passes the turn for Camp Crystal Lake, and apparently frightens the girl, so she jumps out of the car, is chased into the woods, and eventually is killed by the unknown person.

We then meet the other counselors of the camp, who are enjoying themselves, having a good time, swimming and messing around. The camp manager, Steve, leaves for the evening, giving the kids a whole night of freedom and fun to do whatever they want. But an insane murderer with a machete seeks to stop the counselors from having a good time, even if some blood may be spilled in order to achieve this.

This film has some awesome death scenes (just look at the image on the right), and has that fun vintage 80's style horror feel to it. The "Ki ki ki ki ma ma ma ma" sound is also a very creepy. The film starts off really care-free, like the beginning of a fun summer, but ends in a bucket of blood.

The ending is quite surprising, because many people assume that the murderer in this film is Jason, but they are completely wrong. Jason doesn't even show up until part 2, and the hockey mask isn't introduced until part 3. The 10 counting sequels it's spawned aren't nearly as good as the original (I've seen them all), so see this first. This movie just has that '80s slasher feel to it and has many good death scenes for you gorehounds. Another thing you may notice is Kevin Bacon's performance in this movie, but at a younger age of course. I'm surprised that they haven't tried to remake this, although I'm sure they will someday. I'd definitely recommend this, this is one slasher movie that redefined the genre.
