Self-help: Factors which may bring on a crisis

Infections such as respiratory, pneumonia, intestinal, infectious diseases, ear, urine wounds and food poisoning such as salmonella.

Excessive smoking and drinking. If you smoke or drink do so in moderation.

Stress which may include pregnancy, physical injury, emotional factors and overexertion whilst working or participating in prolonged activities.

Cold/damp You should not be in cold or damp conditions for a long period of time.

Dehydration due to excessive sweating, vomiting, diarrhoea or when you are unwell. High altitudes such as hiking, camping or mountaineering. Avoid areas where there is a low level of oxygen e.g. deep sea diving; unpressurised aeroplanes such as a helicopter or twin engine plane.

General anaesthetic if you need to have a general anaesthetic inform the health professionals you have a sickle cell disorder.
