Self-help: Daily ManagementDiet - Fluids - Rest - Cold & Heat - Healthcare
Eat a well balanced diet.
Defrost and reheat food thoroughly.
Cook foods e.g. chicken and eggs thoroughly.
Consult with a dietician if necessary.
Drink plenty of fluids e.g. 4-5 glasses per day. This may increase visits to the toilet.
Increased fluid intake should be encouraged during hot weather, if excess sweating occurs, if you have a fever or infection and before and during exercise.
Drink caffeinated beverages and fizzy drinks in moderation.
If you have diarrhoea or vomiting which can cause dehydration, contact your doctor.
Take plenty of rest, especially if you are pregnant or unwell.
Take part in physical activity but know your tolerance level.
Avoid prolonged exposure to extreme hot or cold weather.
Dress appropriately for the weather (hats, gloves, boots and a warm coat).
Spend as little time as possible in the rain, cold or damp weather.
Do not swim or bathe in cold water and dry yourself properly after swimming or bathing.
Be careful of changes in temperature or draughty environments.
Your home should be adequately heated throughout.
Take any medicine as prescribed especially penicillin. Keep your arranged appointments.
Keep a supply of penicillin and painkillers at home.
Carers should be informed of your needs.
Keep immunisations up to date including HIB vaccine and pneumovax.
Dental care advice is important.
Do not take tonics or iron tablets unless specified by the specialist sickle cell doctor.
Discuss any religious beliefs that affect your care early e.g. blood transfusions.
