King Ferdinand V 1452-1516 King Ferdinand V was called:The Catholic(1452-1516), King of Castile(1474-1504), King of Sicily(1468-1516), King of Aragon(1479-1516), and King of Naples(1504-1516). He was the son of King John II. In 1469, he married his cousin, Isabella. This marriage united the Aragon and Castile kingdoms. Religious conformity were the basic polices. In 1478, a bull issued by Pope Sixtus IV, empowered Ferdinand and Isabella to appoint three inquisitors to deal with heretics and other offenders to the church. This started the Spanish Inquisition. In 1492, the monarchy cruelly expelled 150,000 Jews. King Ferdinand V was a competent ruler with a thirst for power. Also, he was cruel and perfidious. Queen Isabella I 1451-1504 Queen Isabella I was the Queen of Castile and was called la catolica(the catholic). She sponsored the voyages of Christopher Columbus. Also, she married her cousin, Ferdinand V. Isabella had five children and some of them include Catherine and Juana the Mad. Isabella and her husband were known as the "Catholic Kings" of the Spanish Inquisition. They completed the re-conquest of Spain from Moors and the ruthless expulsion of Jews, both in 1492. Thomas de Torquemada 1420-1498 Thomas de Torquemada hated being Jewish and called it a stain on his blood. He also hated Jews. He never touched meat and he wore coarse clothing. He had a strict personal poverty to himself. Whenever he preached it always ended with destruction. Torquemada even preached to Queen Isabella and told her, that when she came to the throne, she would devote her life to get rid of heresy. He became the General Inquisitor of Castile and Aragon and during his 18 years of service, he sent over 10,000 heretics to the stake. Pope Sixtus IV (1414-1484) Pope Sixtus IV was a pope from 1471 to 1484. He took measures to suppress abuses in the Inquisition. He was the patron of arts and letters, helped build and Sistine Chapel, Sistine Bridge, and was the 2nd founder of the Vatican Library. |
