Herert C. Hoover,
The Great Humanitarian

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Some bright spots in the Hoover administration
included the beginning of construction on the
Hoover Dam, plans to build the Grand Coulee Dam and
plans to control flooding of the Mississippi River.
He also worked on plans for the
San Francisco Bay Bridge and for more conservation
efforts.His Administration added the
Great Smoky Mountains National Park. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In October, 1936 Hoover joined the board of the
Boys Club of America, and was immediately elected
its chairman. For Hoover this was only the latest
chapter in a story af an Iowa orphan who had gone
on to feed children throughout Europe,and organize
the American Child Health Association.
Herbert with his "boys."
"The boy is our most precious possession"
Hoover said in 1937. "He strains our nerves, yet
he is a complex of cells teeming with affection.
He is a peroidic nuisance, yet he is a joy forever."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

He returned to Europe in 1938 to organize food
relief for war-torn countries and, as a private
citizen established the Polish Relief Commission
to feed thousands of children.

Hoover and his staff used a C-54 plane dubbed
"the faithful cow" to fly around the world to
arrange food supplies.

Here Hoover is greeting the homeless childen
of Warsaw, Poland.

And another!

Feeding the children.

The Hoover Tower.

One of the most recognizable landmarks on the
Stanford University campus, it stands an impressive
285 feet all, topped by a 48 bell carillon.

Dedicated in 1941, the tower houses the
Hoover Institution Library, as well as the
Herbert Hoover and Lou Henry Hoover exhibit rooms.
On the 11th floor Hoover maintained an office
overlooking his beloved campus.

"The purpose of this Institution is to promote
peace. Its records stand as a challenge to those
who promote war. They should attract those who
search for peace. I therefore dedicate this
Building to these purposes."

Herbert Hoover, Founder.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In 1945 President Harry S. Truman invited
Herbert to the White House.
He wanted Hoover to organize food relief for
war-torn countries as he had done so well in WWI.
Under Truman he served as coordinator of food
supply for 28 nations in the world famine in 1946-47.
Under President Eisenhower, Hoover was made
chairman of the Commission on Organization of the
Executive Branch of Government.
