James Newton Carlisle
October 14, 1837 - January 8, 1877

   Fourth child of T.A. and Kitty Carlisle.  Newton graduated from Wofford College in 1857.  After serving in the Civil War, Newton moved to Okolona, Mississippi in the fall of 1865, and set up a law practice.  His brother, Anderson, joined him in his practice for a few years under the name Carlisle & Carlisle.

   On April 8, 1868, Newton married Mary Ellender Dibrell (b. Nov. 16, 1845 d. Oct. 4, 1933) of Okolona, Mississippi.

   When Newton was 39 years old, he was shot by his brother-in-law Oscar Pollard, and died. Oscar was married to Mary's sister, Margaret.

   At the time of Newton's death, he stood in the foremost rank at the bar, and had attained a commanding position, not only as a lawyer but as  a political speaker and organizer.

They had four children: Kitty Rose Carlisle b. 14 Mar 1869-Okolona Miss- d. 18 Jan 1951 Austin, Travis Co. Tx -never married

James Newton Carlisle II b. 6 Feb 1871-Okolona Miss- d. 28 Aug. 1934-Austin, Travis Co. Tx married Sarah Ann Muschamp- b. 9 Jan 1876-Otley, Yorkshire, England d. 4 Aug 1964-Austin Tx. They married 18 July 1913 in Austin Tx.

Glenn Gates Carlisle b. 11 Mar 1873 Okolona Miss d. 23 Jul 1953 Dallas Tx

Mary Carlisle b. 12 Nov 1875-Okolona Ms D. 29 May 1961-Austin Tx-never married

Their two daughters Mary, (who was called May) and Kitty never married. They were school teachers and lead interesting lives -wrote The Carlisle Primer-a text book for elementary students. They graduated from Columbia University.

   Newton's father, T. A., stated in his will that Newton's widow and children were to receive Newton's share of T. A. 's estate.

   The 1900 and 1910 Census - Travis County, Texas, has that Mary Carlisle and children were living there I have no information on the murder trial and would like information, if you have any available.
