William Holmes Carlisle
  Born Sept. 7, 1839 and Died Oct. 22, 1922

Sixth child of T.A. and Kitty Carlisle. Holmes graduated from Wofford College and took one course of lectures at the New York Medical University.  During the Civil War, he enlisted in the Confederate service in 1861. When the war was over, he went to Louisville (Kentucky) Medical College; graduated in the Spring of 1872 and then came to Texas.

In 1865, Holmes married Hattie W. Hill, daughter of J.T. Hill, of Union, SC. She died before he came to Texas, and was the mother of one child, Hattie Elizabeth b. March 26, 1868

Holmes second marriage took place in October 1876, to Bettie, daughter of Major J.B. Bennett. To this union were born three children -
Emily Fidela b. Sept. 10, 1877 d. March 9, 1963,
Gates William b. August 14, 1879 d. Oct. 1, 1957 Thomas Coleman b. August 28, 1881 d. Aug. 13, 1958.

After retiring from the medical profession in Lamar County, Texas, Dr. Carlisle moved to Oklahoma Territory with his two sons. His wife Bettie, died in Roxton, Texas, where she was living with their daughter.
