Re: What is Proof?
Often, we humans are led to assume, by default, that we have -all- the answers. Really, that's been the recurring element in history as we know it... some high and mighty guy believing that he's right and changing the world because of it.

Though someone solidly believing that he or she does or does not believe in the existence of a higher power is not necessarily tantamount to the Hitlers and Napoleons of our world, the rote elements are the same. The human psyche is led to believe that the little spheres of reality that we find ourselves are the extent of reality. We believe that because we wake up and follow a particular course and experience whatever laws of nature we know or believe apply to us, these are the -only- forces acting upon anything in the universe.

Science - vaunted science - has hit us square across the face again and again with exceptions to every rule that we could come up with. Even the Law of Gravity seems to fall apart when dealing with the recently discovered elements of the universe. Black holes and singularities boggle our minds - Stephen Hawking hurts his head over quantum physics. The great thinkers of our minds - the men with all the answers - are left, simply, stumped. In the end, we all have to say those 3 detested words... "I don't know."

Even in the elements of our existence that we believe we can pin down with one formula or another, the rules constantly change and we find ourselves "wrong" again and again. Based on experienced evidence, experienced logic, experienced "proofs," we form our theories and even our laws. Exceptions are always found, and thus our stable, static "reality" really shifts more than the most torrential ocean in a hurricane.

At the beginning of this century, the populace, astronomers, and scientists alike were simply -convinced- that there were even, parallel "trenches" dug into the surface of the planet Mars. Ask any person of the time, and he or she would have told you nothing different. Ask any person of our time, and the supposition seems quite ridiculous to him or her.

Up until times as late as the 1950's and 1960's, everyone was convinced that the law of gravity was simply unbreakable. Gravity was one of those constant things in the universe. Masses always attracted. Put two things close enough together, and they'll smash into each other.

Within the past 5 or 10 years, however, astronomers using recently developed technology have identified gas giants many times larger than the planet Jupiter orbiting at ranges closer than the planet Mercury. According to all of our heralded scientific canons and constants, this is simply -impossible.- The gravity produced by the system's sun should suck any such gases around a solid core by such a force that none could escape and form a planet-like sphere. Yet there it is, before our eyes -- and we are forced to admit that yes, "We were wrong."

To the scientific and uninformed mind alike, the presence of either any spiritual force within us or a higher power "above" simply seems ludicrous. "Impossible" by sheer force of logic. But, you know... watch-sized computers would have seemed infinitely silly to Albert Einstein.
