The Shen girls won the Schenectady girls' Invitational held on May 2nd with a score of 105.5, beating out second place finisher Fonda-Fultonville, who had 89.
In the 100, Ross was third with a 13.0. Junior Ashlee Robertson was third in the 200 with a time of 26.9. Sophomre Lisa Srok was also third in the 400 with a time of 61.48.
The 4x100 team of senior Tionna Holland, Maguire, junior Kristen Risch, and Robertson won with a time of 51.54.
In the field events, senior Katie McDonough was first with a 5-2 jump. Risch was second in the triple jump with a 33-5.75 effort. Sophomore Jamie Stitt was second in the pole vault with a 10-0. Once again the Shen girls' throwers dominated as seniors Kelly Hagner and Vicky Pasche combined for 1-2 finishes in the shot put and discus. Hagner won the shot with a 35-3, just beating out her teammate Pasche, who threw 35-2. In the discus, Hagner was victorious again with a 133-0 throw. Pasche placed second with a 107-0 toss. Hagner was the top American finisher at the recent Penn Relays.
At the boys meet held on May 4th, the Shen boys placed 9th with 30 points. Bethlehem won the meet with 62 points.
The 4x800 team of Ela, Hagstrand, Horan, and Slater was 4th with an 8:29. The 4x100 team of Jim Chambers, Nello Digiandomenico, and Andre Vives ran a team best 45.8. The 4x400 team was 5th.
In the 110 high hurdles, Vives was 6th. Junior Dave Vickers was third in the 400 hurdles with a team best time of 58.0.
Wagner Samaniego was 5th in the 400 with a team best time of 52.2. Sam Silver placed 6th in the 400.
John Lynch and Zach Hansen were both in the top six in the 800, but due to a scoring error, were not scored as finishing in those places. Lynch did run a team best time of 2:00.6 for the open 800.
In the 3200, Darrell Andruski was second with a personal and team best 9:24. Suffern junior Justin Romaniuk was first with a 9:20. Romaniuk, the state Class A cross country champion and national champion in the mile, made the two and a half hour trip to Schenectady with several teammates, including 400 victor Chris Lolagne (48.6-Meet Record). Romaniuk and Andruski separated themselves from the pack about half way through the race and battled through on and off rain the rest of the way. The Suffern junior finally broke through with 400 to go. Romaniuk's and Andruki's times are the fastest two times in the state this spring.
In the field events, senior Pat Harrison was 4th in the pole vault. Cooper was 6th. In the high jump, Nelson was 5th with a 5-10 jump. McClure was 6th with the same height.
Schenectady proved to be a successful meet not only for Shen, who had many athletes run team and personal bests, but also for other competitors as well. Shaker sophomore Justin Corelli ran a school record 4:22.2 in the 1600. This is the fastest time in the state so far this spring. Second place finisher, Tyler Raymond of Scotia, also set a school record, as did third place finisher, Sean French of Chatham, and fourth place finisher, Sam Gonzales of Fonda.
