Why the "Resident Evil" Movie Needs to be Shot

Ok anyone who's seen the first “Resident Evil” movie probably realized it was a mediocre at best zombie-ish movie with very little to define it from other zombie movies. And some of you have played the game and thought "Wow, a Resident Evil movie! I'll see that!" Then you saw George Romero's the director, and thought "Oh, so he’s got some experience with zombie movies. Even if they weren’t great." And then you saw Milla Jovovich and thought "Wait, she doesn't look like Jill!" And that’s when you put two and two together and realized “Oh shit, they’re gonna screw this movie up and give Resident Evil (RE) a bad name.” And you were right. They screwed it up. No characters from the game, no setting from the game, no event from the game, and they still called it “a movie based on the RE video game”? There were 3 things in common with the movie and the game: zombies and the words “T virus” and “Umbrella Corporation.” Oh yeah, they made a huge effort there to make it accurate to the game.

And to be fair, the game zombies and the movie zombies were completely different. There were not hordes of zombies in the game, and they were a lot more traditional; moaning and decomposing. The movie zombies were pulled straight from Dawn of the Dead. So Romero must be the most lazy ass director I’ve ever seen; he based a movie on his previous movies and he couldn’t even come up with his own clever or accurate title so he stole the game title, threw in “T virus” a few times in the scripts, and called it a day. Good job asshole, you’ve now destroyed the good name of RE in the minds of the masses. Not that they matter; they haven’t even played the game. It just pisses me off that some people will choose not to play the game because they think it will suck ass like the movie. As a zombie movie, it gets a C, but based on the game, it gets an F.

Now for the most important part. The Resident Evil games. Lighters and emblems and crests made up the puzzles, and all the key collecting. Then the handgun, shotgun, and magnum. And of course the mansion. And one thing in common with every RE game- the finale. Everything blows up. A lab, a house, a city- whatever. Nothing appeared in the movie. The mansion? A shower scene and a flashback. But the audience was focused on the naked Milla Jovovich. Obviously they had guns, but there weren’t even any puzzles, or keys. And they were in what could pass for labs; I saw no MO disks! No generators, no batteries, nothing. No zombies even until halfway through the movie. I love it when people lose it when they see *gasp* humans who walk slowly and don’t die easily! You could describe old people on life support in the same terms. Or retarded kids. Are you afraid of Granny and Special Ed? But that’s not important; I was glad to see her die. And for those of you with ADD, I’m sure you loved the laser scene, which was totally irrelevant and added nothing to the plot. Romero was probably going for a special effects award. Personally I think he deserved it; red lights and some zombie makeup would have impressed me if I had seen that movie and liked it. But then I wouldn’t have a high enough IQ to breathe.

So for all of you who thought Romero was a good director, I hope I’ve changed your mind. And anyone who still thinks Resident Evil was a good movie, just play the game, then come whine to me. I won’t respect you more, but my opinion doesn’t really matter, and you should play the game anyway.
