~Native Spirit~

We moved into the land
once called Cherokee Nation
As I looked around with
sorrow I came upon a reservation
Conditions not too appealing,
but there they live
Could they look upon me,
and truly forgive?

Many times in the past
I heard of the Trail of Tears,
I thought about each footstep
that was walked so many years.
How could the White man
take away their liberty?
Wasn't it the Indian who welcomed
ancestors of you and me?

As I think about this Nation
I wonder how they feel,
When terrorists came to our land,
a horror so real.
Where is the protection,
and what would we do,
If terriorists came here
to take away land from me and you?

Cherokee Indians
are the most proud of all.
They still speak kindly and stand so tall.

How can we forget
what we did to them in the past?
When will we give it back,
and live in peace at last? ©Alice E. Steimle-2003
