Fancy & Texas Girl's Fry
Week Three - May 23rd, 2001
At 3 weeks of age the fry are eating, vinegar eels and micro worms,
along with newly hatched baby brine shrimp,
and a good quality of flake food, ground very fine.
I am currently having problems with both the
vinegar eels and the worm cultures, so the fry will
be receiving the powdered flake food once a day in their place.
There is a vast difference in the size of the fry
at this age. I have started doing water changes
this week, replacing about a quart daily. Making sure
that the water to be added is exactly the same temperature.
Week Four - May 30th., 2001
At four weeks of age. There is a considerable size difference in the fry.
At this point I do a major clean up in the tank, cleaning the algae off
the tank sides and using the turkey baster to clean
the floor of the tank as best I can.
It does become rather grungy, but as long as any dead
fry or left over food is removed
there should be no problem in leaving the algae growing on the bottom and back.
I observe the smaller fry nibbeling at it quite often.
At this point I change about a quart of water every day. Be sure to save what you syphon off
and check your container for any fry you may have gotten accidently.
6 Weeks
At 6 weeks of age the fry are just starting to get some coloration in their fins and tails. They are starting to become aware of the world outside of their tank and now come eagerly like little pigs to the front of the tank when anyone is near it. I know they are looking for a tasty snack.
8 Weeks Old
At 8 weeks of age the fry are getting color to them and it is also becomming possible to tell their sex. In the top picture the larger fry is a female and the smaller is a male. Note the longer finnage and the longer ventral fins on the young male.
