Tone

I never really quite understood the delicate nature of the flute until recently. For the longest time I thought that a good tone was a strong, lough tone with very fast vibrato. But after listening to many great flute players (including my favorite Jean-Pierre Rampal) I realized that they had a very dainty, delicate quality to their sound, that made it sound like it wasn't even the same instrument. Then I set out to try to achieve that same delicate sound.

I would like to say that my improvement of my tone is from my flute teacher, and she helped; but my constant listening to recordings of professional flute players allowed me to reach for that "perfect tone." I still haven't reached it, but I'm getting close

This is the best way for me to explain how to make a beautiful tone on your flute. Imagine each note is a piece of waterford crystal. When you blow you don't want that piece of crystal to shatter, so blow so delicately but with enough support that that note just rings with beauty, instead of squaking like a parrott.
