So you're interested in the Magent, eh? Naw, I doubt it, but anyways, for a little background information...

The Academic Magnet was established in 1988 at Burke High School in downtown Charleston. In 1997, due to rising attendence numbers, a desire for seperation from Burke, and the closure of the Charleston Naval Base, the Magnet relocated in North Charleston over Winter Break. For the first semester of my freshmen year, we were forced to walk (quite a distance) to trailers, which housed the science classes and cafeteria. Over Winter break however, the new science wing, which had been under construction for the past year was finally completed, and we moved in.

That takes care of about everything...Um, Dr. Kanapaux is the principal, Mr. Portera is the assistant principal, and Ms. Duckett is our lovely secretary who deserves all the credit for running our school. Now for my personal feelings...

So far I've been pretty satisfied...this is definitely an improvment from middle school (what a shocker!)...Everything, however, has its pros and cons...I'll start with the cons. Ok, here at the Magnet we have this retarded policy that forces everyone--teacher, student, volunteer--to wear an ID badge that is issued every two years. Now I suppose it wouldn't be so bad if they looked decent, but these things are downright hideous. No no no...we couldn't get a company to make them--I mean that would actaully make sense, something some of the facualty and administrative members lack. So here we are, stuck with these ghetto ID badges, which actaully cost MONEY--It's something like $7.50 to replace an ID badge if you lose it--only adding insult to injury if I may say. All I can say is if you're gonna charge that much for a piece of plastic, at least make it look good. Anyways, enough of that...

Next I would like to address the strict dress code. It really is ridiculous, and I believe there are more derserving items of interest that should be addressed over the constant bickering on whether or not your shoes have backs. Enough on that subject.

I think that's about all I can think of complaining about, although I'm sure there's more....As for what I like about the Magnet, I must say that I am more satisfied that dissatisfied. The people are nice (or at least most of them), a majority of the clases are fun, and the environment for learning is excellent--it definitely has a college atmosphere, except for the immature freshmen who run about the halls acting like idiots (some, not all).

Anyways, I guess that's all about the Magnet now...I'll probably add more as the opportunity presents itself and I remember more stuff.
