    5555 As Harvey Dent, he was one of Bruce Wayne's closest friends, a handsome district attorney who crusaded for justice. As Two-Face, he is one of Gotham City's greatest villains, a man obsessed with the concept of duality and the number two.

    Dent's first hint that his psyche was abnormal came after he failed to convict Dr. Rudolph Klemper of murder. After his acquittal, Klemper accosted Dent and announced that he had indeed committed the crimes of which he was accused. There were, Klemper explained, two Klempers: one a law abiding citizen and the other a malevolent beast. Klemper said that he could see that Harvey was a kindred spirit, with a second self inside, desperate to be free.

    Klemper's observation haunted Dent, and his actions as district attorney became increasingly erratic. It began to look as though Dent were washed up; he grew unreliable and began to bend the law to make his cases.

    The turning point was during the trial of crimelord Boss Maroni. With an airtight case against him, Maroni took his revenge against Dent by hurling a vial of acid at the D.A. in a packed courtroom. Half of Harvey's face was horribly scarred, and his sanity was shattered. From that day forward, Harvey would be known as Two-Face.

    As Two-Face, Harvey mutilated one side of the lucky silver dollar his father had given him. All his acts as Two-Face would be decided by the flip of a coin: the clean side for acts of compassion and sanity, and the mutilated side demanding violent, lawless behavior.
