A grade-school contest involving a jigsaw puzzle gave Edward Nigma his first opportunity to develop the obsession that would later become his hallmark. Determined to win the contest, Nigma broke into his teacher's desk and photographed the completed puzzle. Armed with this information, he completed the puzzle with ease and learned a valuable lesson about the power of puzzles and, more importantly, the power of knowing the answers beforehand.
As the years went by, Nigma continually used puzzles to beat his opponents. He habitually cheated to ensure that he would win any contest of wits, and, as a young man, ran a crooked game booth at a carnival. Yearning to make bigger money, he decided to become a big-time criminal. He devised the nom de guerre Riddler and created a costume decorated with question marks.
The Riddler concocted a unique approach to crime. He sends clues to his capers in the form of puzzles and riddles to the police and Batman. As the world's greatest detective, the Dark Knight is usually the only person able to decipher the Riddler's intentions. Batman has foiled the Riddler's schemes repeatedly, and the Riddler has become obsessed with besting his foe and proving that he is Batman's intellectual superior. The Riddler's schemes have become increasingly labyrinthine; he has been known to rob banks, jewelry stores, or museums, and to commit blackmail and extortion.
