REQUIREMENT TO READING THIS PAGE: I suggest that you see the movie first. If you haven't, you can read the synopsis on the official site.

On February 28, 2000, I wrote an entry in my diary called "Girl, Interrupted: Running Commentary". This is what I wrote:

Before Running Commentary

This afternoon, I am going to see Girl, Interrupted again. This'll be my fourth time. I should try to find out if I can get the poster while I'm at it. After all, it's been playing for a while now. And I was able to buy the Princess Mononoke one.
It's not like this is my favourite movie. It supersedes the idea of a movie. It is me. It is my life, in some respect. It is who I could have been if I had really become a writer. It is my trajectory, at least one of them. I saw it alone the first time. I will see it alone again...

Running Commentary

"Have you ever confused a dream w/ life? Or stolen something when u have the cash? Have you ever been blue or thought your train moving when standing still. Maybe I was crazy. Or maybe it was just the 60's..."
"Sometimes it's hard for me to stand in one place."
"Explain to a doctor that the laws of physics can be susspended? That what goes up may not come down That time can move forward + backward + back again + you can't control it?"

Her leaving at the beginning feels like going [away to college].

"I'm not John Lennon" and before that "I see things".
"May I ask what you plan to do?"
"I plan to write."
"But what do you plan to do?"
"...I don't want to end up like my mother."
"Women today have more choices than that."
"No, they don't."

Angelina Jolie is so beautiful in this film!
The hebephrenic schitzophrenic left before she got her meds. Is that a possible blooper?

I know how Susanna felt at graduation. No honours spoken with her name, alone + bored to tears at the ceremony.

____________ fantastica = pathological lyer.

She looks so cool when she's dancing @ the party...
Jared Lego! He's awesome in this!

"I mean, everyone thinks about it @ one pt"
"How would you do it?"
"I don't know. Guess I never really thought about it"
"See once it's in your head though, you're a new breed, a new organism..."

She's got tic-tac-toe in her journal! Was she playing against herself?
TWO KIDS AND 1 BATHROOM

Angelina Jolie is so awesome looking when she sits backwards in the chair and faces Susanna. She's got a catlike quality to her.

Are writers supposed to smoke?

"I haven't exactly been a ball of joy..."
"I understand you tried to kill yourself."
"I had a headache."
"I'm puzzled why it is that I have to be in a mental institution..."

"Everyone here is...crazy."
"You want to go home?"
"Same problem."

The cat puppet thing that A.J. does is so cute! I want a cat puppet!

She didn't have a cig on her way to the phone but she does when she gets there!

That kaycera song is so dumb!!!
What's the band on A.J.'s arm? She has it after she gets back w/ the police. She does awesome eyebrow things. That mirror thing was clever.
IF YOU LIVED HERE, YOU'D BE HOME NOW
"Scribble, scribble, scribble...written anything about me yet?"
"You lie down, you confess your secrets + you're saved. The more you say, the more they consider setting you free."
"What if you don't have any secrets?"
"Then you're a lifer, like me."
"Borderline between what + what?"
Borderline personality disorder

They look like they're leaving a football game after that scene. What is A.J. quoting? Why does she smack off the TV? [NOTE: later, I started reading the book "Girl, Interrupted", and I found out why Lisa does that. The real Lisa used to walk by and smack off the TV, telling everyone she hated TV and that it was bad for you.]

How did Susanna get a phonecall from Lisa? The operator had to connect it (in the hospital). Why did she? [NOTE: also mentioned in the book. There was a second Lisa, and the two Lisas would talk on the phone like that all the time. So it actually happened.]

I like the look the lockpicker gives after she picks the lock. It was weird that they went bowling. When I first saw this, I thought they were sneaking out.

The scene where they sneak into Dr. Wick's office feels like when I read my file and found psychological evals from when I was younger. I know why they become upset over them.

They peg Susanna w/ having a form of schitzophrenia. That makes sense with b.p.d....

She says it's a blizzard, but it's not even snowing. The old Happy Birthday, Sis card looks familiar.

The big girl must have a form of schizophrenia, because she does word salad with "pepperment stick".

I love how A.J.'s not phased when the ice cream guy says "nuts?" and everyone else is cracking up.

Where did Susanna get the "if you lived here..." line before? Daisy says it later. I love how they get that lady and her brat daughter back.

I like the music sequence after Daisy leaves, where they're showing time pass. Good effect, good filming.
Dr. Melvin's such a jerk for falling asleep during therapy.
Problem with the time pass sequence is that they all wear the same clothes the whole time. for days + months?
Slinky commercial in background while A.J. plays w/ cat puppet. She makes the cat wave when talking to the nurse + says the word "duty".
He says she's been there for a year. Why hasn't he reported for duty yet?
How did she cut her hand? Did she do it herself w/ her fingernail? 5 grand won't buy you a cabin in the woods.

"I think I love you." I wouldn't go with a guy after that.
I feel like Polly.
"Why do you like me?"
"I just like you that's all. I wish you were getting better though. I'd take you out to a movie or something..."
The meds woman is married. She works at night.

I love Lisa's Disney World idea for her, Polly, and Susanna.
I love the "keep it coming" motion from Lisa, and how they sing.
WR [Wynonna Ryder] has an awesome voice. I like how kiddish it sounds, how it gets hoarse.

Why does Susanna run to her room like that, like she can hide? I like Dr. Wick. The actress is familiar too. Why does only Susanna get in trouble?
I like her point about promiscuity, how guys get away with more.
She didn't do to her boyfriend what she said. And he's not her boyfriend!
"Your progress has plateaued. Does that surprise you."
"I'm ambivalent."
I like the discussing of the word.
"Will I stay or will I go?"
"Am I sane or am I crazy?"
"Those aren't two courses of action."
"They are for some people."

"How much will you indulge in your flaws? What are your flaws? Are they flaws? Will you indulge in them + commit yourself to hospital for life?"
I'd like to indulge in my flaws.
She tries to kill the pain with pills again.
"We live in a time of doubt. The institutions which we once trusted now seem unreliable." (on the TV).
"I'm just going to rest for a while just a little while."
"Get yourself out."
"You are a lazy, self indulgent little girl who is driving herself crazy."
"And you're just throwing it away."
I like how she looks when she's sleeping. And how A.J. looks when she wakes up.
The hippies are cool.
I'd like to kiss her too.
Tony's cute. I like how he cocks his head to the side.
Daisy's life was probably making sense to her again. She's so nice to them, and she's smiling a lot. She seems to like mothering them a bit.
Lisa looks at Daisy like she's her next victim. Her last words are "Have fun in Florida".
Susanna goes for the pills again but this time doesn't take any.
The bridge looks like Haverhill's Basillere bridge [in Massachusetts].
Is that a donut factory that Lisa has? I like the butterfly wallpaper.
The cat knows.
...
"You pressed her buttons and then take her money?"
"...she was waiting for an excuse."
Good camera effect w/ the shot of the front door where Lisa's leaving and upstairs where Susanna is.
Teh cat looks like Raincloud [a cat my aunt used to have]. [the cat] matches her skirt.
Is Georgiana just a pathological lyer, or is she also a hebephrenic schitzophrenic?
"That I was sorry. That I would never know what it was like to be her but I know what it's like to want to die, how it hurts to smile... how you hurt the thing on the outside to kill the thing on the inside."
"Put it down, put it away, put it in your notebook, away from you so you can't curl up with it anymore."
"Lisa says it's a gift, that it lets you see the truth."

"Don't drop anchor here."

"When you don't want to feel, death can seem like a dream. But seeing it, really seeing it, makes dreaming about it ...ridiculous."

"The point is control."

The Wizard of Oz thing at the end is awesome.
Her eyes look awesome through the peekwindow [Angelina Jolie]

"My plan, no...I plan to write."
They still won't let her just write!
What happens to the big girl?
She takes sleeping pills, then doesn't sleep for long. She wakes up + worries about the cat. W/ pills, she should be out for longer.
Lisa looks like a ghost at the end of the hallway. How does she get out of her restraints.
"I'm playing the villian, baby, just like you want."
Lisa has another bandage on the same part of her arm. What is that?
"You're going to chock on your average ... mediocre life."
"Why doesn't anyone reach in and rip out the truth?"
"I've wasted a year of my life. Maybe everyone out there is a liar. Maybe the world is ignorant + stupid. But I'd rather be in it...than be down here with you."
The nailpolish looks neat.
"You know all that stuff I say in your journal? I don't know what I'm saying. They're just thoughts. Maybe I'm the lyar."
"Maybe not."

"Was I ever crazy? Maybe. Or maybe life is."
"Crazy isn't being broken or burying a dark secret. It's you or me, amplified. If you ever told a lie and enjoyed it. If you ever wanted to be a child forever... But there isn't a day my heart doesn't find them."

After Running Commentary: 2/29/00

I was the only one in the movie theatre when I saw Girl, Interrupted. The absolute only one. So I did what any writer would do in that situation; I opened my diary and took notes. It was an exhilleratingly new way to experience the movie. I considered new ideas as I recorded key quotes and wrote down reactions. Some of these quotes will appear later [in my diaries], for reevaluation.
I sat there alone in the totally empty movie theatre and I watched the movie the way I wanted to see it.

That's basically when the commentary ends. Please return to my media page or go home to DREAM!
