Hurricane Pauline Batters Acapulco
Wednesday and Thursday, the violent storm called 'Pauline' whipped harsh winds and brutal rains against Acupulco and the coast nearby, a chilling reminder of nature's power. With a death toll guess from 141 to 400, the outlook, for the present, at least, seems grim. For the most part, those who did not their lose their lives lost everything else. "The figures we have are about 400 dead and 20,000 homeless," Red Cross president Jose Barroso informed a Mexico City news conference. For waves as high as thirty feet, and mudslides down the roads that reach as far as waist-deep, this is an easy statement to believe. For now, all the Red Cross and other aid organizations can do is wait, help, and hope.
Nobel Peace Prize Awarded
(AP photo)
After six years of leading the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, Jody Williams finally won her battle. Having been presented with the Nobel Peace Prize, she led the campaign to its glory last month, when almost 100 nations agreed to not only ban future land mines, but to clean mines out that have already been laid. (The only visible opposition to the act was from the United States, China, and Russia, all of whom did not agree to the action). She admitted that there was still a lot of work to do yet, but that she was still surprised at the short time in which her (and her colleagues') goal was achieved.
