The Enchanted Creatures
Here be magic beasts..
Dragons!
Dragons are lithe, graceful creatures that have roamed the earth ever since the God and Goddess brought them into existence. They are often known by their crested heads, scaly hides, thick, leathery wings, and long shining talons. Some of the most famous villainous dragons are Smaug, from The Hobbit, and the dragon from St. George and the Dragon. However, most dragons are peaceful, as the ones in Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series. (Which is, by the way, a great group of books that you really ought to read.)
Gryphons!
Gryphons are strong, stubborn beasts that have the bodies of lions and wings of eagles (or any combination, depending on the source or homeland). They are, more often than not, quite adept at magic, though they are hard to find after the Great War in the Age of Legends. Gryphons are rarely seen in human literature, except for books like The Black Gryphon, by Mercedes Lackey and Larry Dixon.
Nymphs and Sprites!
Many people that I know contend that Nymphs and Sprites really don't belong in Magickal Creatures section..but I had to put them somewhere! Nymphs and Sprites are usually some form of elementals: i.e. a wood nymph or a water sprite. They are slender, athletic folk, who often are known to band in single-gender groups to capture travellers of the opposite sex..this, of course, being for procreation. Also, Dryads fall under this sub-category.
Shades!
Shades, also known as Shadows, Ghosts, Spirits, or Haunts, are the bodiless souls of those who have made a pact with the Devil himself (or some other representative of evil, I would imagine). They are in human form, though they are oft so common-looking that the eye seems to slip right over them. This, for obvious reasons, makes the magically powerful Shades that much more powerful...and dangerous.
Zombies!
If there was an opposite to a Shade, it would be a Zombie (also known as Flesh Hounds, Soulless, etc.). These are a breed of men and women whose souls have departed them to become Shades. Their forms are usually very normal-looking, except for a pale shade of the skin, or bulging eyes. As noted, for every Shade, there is a Zombie.
