Shock: Discoveries and Mayhem By Cat Email: gate_crasher900@hotmail.com

SPOILERS: I dunno. The whole Peter thing is over. It’s probably set in the new series.

CONTENT WARNINGS: There is a bitch fight. Some sexual content.

DISCLAIMER: You know the drill, I don’t own anyone of the characters… yadda yadda yadda. The only characters I own are Cory, The Taylor Family and the children at the end. If you want to borrow them for a sequal or something feel free to do so. But please at least notify me.

AUTHOR’S NOTES: It’s mainly what you wanted to see. There is a different personality developed with Harry Ryan. I thought of this just as an interesting concept for the show. Claire and Alex do get together. But I thought it should be put under Claire because… it’s more about her and her past. Some things I didn’t know so I just made them up to suit the story… Sorry to anyone who is annoyed with me for that, Hope you like it.

Chapter 1: Memory by Mail

Claire sat out on the veranda watching the sunset. Her fingers twisted around an envelope that had arrived in the mail. She looked at the neat writing on the front again. Her initials where clearly printed and so was the address. But she couldn’t open it. Something was in this letter that could change her life. She had read that in her horoscope on the weekend out of sheer boredom. She wasn’t sure who would send her a letter from Perth. It didn’t make sense. Her thoughts were cut short by sudden footsteps behind her. She listened to the pattern carefully.

“Hi Meg.” The footsteps stopped.

“How did you know it was me?” Meg sat next to her on the steps. Claire smiled,

“I noticed the way you walked. I’ve been doing it for years.” Meg let out a small laugh and noticed the unopened envelope Claire was holding.

“What’s that?” She inquired. Claire looked at the envelope.

‘I received it today, from Perth. Not sure who it’s from.”

“Why don’t you open it and see.”

“Because I have a feeling that whatever is in this letter will change everything.”

“Are you still thinking about that horoscope? Do you want me to open it for you?” Claire nodded and handed Meg the envelope. She looked away as she heard the paper rip apart.

“Okay it says…”

Dear Claire,

I hope you are still living at Drovers Run. I wasn’t to sure where else to send this letter. But I suppose no matter where you are this letter will find you. I know I haven’t written in awhile, but mum’s been on my back making sure I have no contact with you. I’m 15 now and can do what I want. Just like you did.

I know we haven’t seen each other in ages, but I want to see you again. Mum’s started it all up. I need help Claire. I need to get away from here. By the time you read this I’ll probably be on my way to Adelaide. You can’t contact me so I’m hoping that you will still be at Drovers. Don’t let anyone know I’m coming. I want it to be a surprise. So I guess I’ll see you soon.

All my love

Cory

Claire drew in a sharp breath as the name was read out. Meg couldn’t hide the shock on her face. Claire stood up and started to pace back and fourth. She watched as Meg read the letter again and again. Becky came up behind her.

“Um, are you two busy.” Claire stopped pacing and looked at Becky.

“No, what’s wrong Becky?” Claire smiled as Becky looked at her feet and held out a small book.

“Could you please read this to me Claire?” Claire took the book from her and looked at the page. The letters where large and in bold print. Claire remembered Tess owning it when she was little.

“It says, Little Red Riding Hood. Do you want me to read the rest?”

“No just that page. I’m trying to memorise the words.” Meg took notice of her now,

“After dinner I’ll help you with some more, if you want?”

“Thanks Meg, I’d like that.” Becky smiled and walked back inside repeating the words in the book. Meg looked at Claire, but wasn’t too sure what she should be saying. Claire smiled as she rubbed the back of her neck and sighed. Memories filled her mind of Cory.

“She’s coming back Meg.”

“Yes, she is.” Replied Meg.

Chapter 2: Becky’s hospitality

Two weeks later Becky sat at the kitchen table reading what she had learnt of her book. She could remember most of the words, but some where not so easy. She sighed as she came to a word and tried to remember what it was. She looked at Meg,

“What’s this word?” Meg walked over to her as she dried one of the pots.

“Think about it, Becky. It was on the last page.” Becky nodded and flipped the page back. She searched the page until she found the exact same word. She strained to remember the part of the story she had just finished reading.

“It’s Wolf, isn’t it?”

“That’s right, very good.” Becky smiled at her accomplishment. Although the whole reading thing was it seemed to be working out pretty well. Becky went back to the page she was on and kept reading. Meg looked up as Jodi came in the back door.

“What do you want Jodi?”

“Can’t a girl come and see her mother every now and then without wanting something?” Jodi was shocked. Becky let out a small giggle.

“Not in your case.” Meg said as she put away the fry pan.

“I was wondering if I could go into the city.”

“Why?” Meg stood up straight and put her hands on her hips.

“Well…”

“She’s got a hot date tomorrow night with a certain Italian guy.” Becky interrupted, resulting in a slap over the head from Jodi. Meg sighed,

“On one condition.”

“Anything!” said Jodi; pleased to realise her mother was allowing her to be ‘normal’.

“Becky is going to drive you into town and bring you home. Is that okay Becky?”

“Yeah sure, I had things to do in town anyway. Claire wanted me to pick some things up.” She said as she closed the book and stood up. Before Jodi could protest Becky pushed her out the back door.

“She’ll be fine Meg, I promise.”

Claire sat silently on the fence, watching Blaze gallop around the paddock. She held the letter in her hand. Tess called to her as she walked. Claire didn’t notice she stared into the distance. A sudden movement jolted Claire back to her senses.

“Earth to Claire, earth to Claire.” Tess called. Claire glared at her.

“What do you want Tess?”

“Whoa, someone’s in an ultra bad mood.” Claire jumped down off the fence and whistled for Blaze. Tess watched her.

“I was thinking about… Becky’s birthday, it’s in one week and I haven’t got her a present yet. What do you think I should get her?” Tess was shocked,

“You’re asking me for help?”

“Yes, I’m desperate.” Claire replied sarcastically. Tess just ignored her and placed her foot on the fence to tie her shoelace.

“She might like a book, she’s really getting into reading lately. If you bought her a really good book then she could work towards reading it.” Claire nodded; she had to admit Tess could come up with some really good things. Tess stood up and smiled at Claire.

“So what did you want me for?”

“Just to see how you were.” Tess placed a hand on Claire’s shoulder.

“I’m fine Tess, why would you think that something was wrong?” Tess shrugged her shoulders,

“I don’t know, you’ve been fairly distant the past two weeks.” Claire smiled.

“I’m fine Tess, really.”

“I better be going then. Got some things to help Nick with.” Tess said backing away slowly.

“Sure you do.” The both smiled, and Tess turned to go back to the house. Claire really thought she should tell her about Cory before she arrived on their doorstep. But Tess wouldn’t notice anyway. She spends too much time over at Nick’s anyway.

‘Ah, Tess.” Tess spun around at the mention of her name.

“Yeah?” Claire opened her mouth to tell her everything. But she couldn’t.

“Never mind.”

“Okay.” Claire watched as Tess walked back to the house. What was she going to do about this situation? She could handle Tess, but Cory was another matter. They hadn’t seen each for years. Cory was only six when her mother took her away, now she was fifteen. Could people really age that quickly? It didn’t seem so long ago when… Claire’s thought where broken by the sound of Tess’ car back firing.

“Great.” She said as she walked to the house.

The streets where fairly quiet as Becky Howard sat in the truck waiting for Jodi to come beck from buying a new dress.     She sat straight trying to read her book, but something in the corner of her eye was distracting her. She turned her head slightly for a better look. A young girl in denim jeans and a black shirt was sitting with a bag on the other side of the road. Becky got out and locked the car before running over across the street to the girl.

“Excuse me, are you okay?” the young girl looked up at her and smiled.

“Yeah it’s just I’ve been walking so far today and I still have a long way to walk tomorrow. I have no money left to rent out a room for the night and eat.” Becky sat down next to her,

“Where are you going?” She asked.

“I’m on my way to Gungellan, it’s about four hours…” Becky cut her off,

“Do you want a lift? I actually live out there.” A smile spread across the young girls’ face.

“Gee thanks, nice to know that there are some nice people in the world for a change.” Becky helped her up and picked up her travel bag.

“I’m Becky.” The girls shook hands.

“My name’s Cory.”

As they drove back to Gungellan, Jodi asked question after question. Cory answered each one as best as she could and Becky listened carefully until she finally had a chance to ask a sensible question. She looked in the rear view mirror at Cory.

“So where are you headed?”

“Well I guess if I’m actually in Gungellan and don’t have to walk too far I could always use the money I have to rent a room at the pub and not eat.” Becky coughed,

“No, that won’t do at all. Look we only live a short distance from town, why don’t you stay with me tonight and you can have a good meal. Then in the morning I’ll drive you wherever you are going.” She smiled at Cory.

“Thanks.” Jodi rolled her eyes; Becky had the softest heart in Australia.

Claire ran outside to greet Becky as she pulled up in the driveway. Jodi hopped out and started getting her things from the boot, leaving Cory asleep in the back.

“Becky did you get the things?” Becky nodded and walked around to the boot to get them. Claire helped her lift the huge box out and carry it to the stable. Becky talked as they walked.

“Claire, can I borrow some more blankets from the house?”

“Sure, why?”

“Well, I kind of invited a girl to stay the night because she had no where else to go.” They placed the box down and Claire started to unpack the new saddles for the horses.

“You better tell Meg that she’s staying for dinner.” Claire said.

“Thanks Claire.”

“Who is this girl anyway? Is she new to the town?” Becky turned back to Claire as she got to the door.

“Yeah, she said she’s not sure if she’s staying. She’s coming to see family. Her name is Cory, but…” Becky didn’t have time to finish. Claire had dropped one of the old saddles and was standing with her.

“Where is she Becky?” confusion swept over Becky.

“I left her in the truck she was asleep…” Claire didn’t hear the rest. She ran as fast as she could to where Becky had left the truck, almost bowling over Meg.

“Claire what’s wrong?” Claire turned and jogged backwards as she called out.

“She’s here Meg, she’s here.”

Claire opened the back door o the truck to find Cory asleep. She placed her hand on Cory’s head and moved her hair from her face. Cory moved, yawned and opened her eyes. She looked up at the face above her. The eyes were almost crying, and the smile was speaking her name.

“Cory.” Cory sat up and looked at the person. The hair, the eyes, it couldn’t be.

“Claire, is it you?” Claire nodded and Cory let her arms fall around Claire’ neck as she hugged her close. She sat back a bit and put her hand on Claire’s head. She parted Claire’s hair on the side of her head and revealed the scar. It was Claire, her Claire.

Chapter 3: Shattered Welcome

The front door almost swung off its hinges as Tess walked in. Claire tried to stop her from going upstairs before she met Cory, but Tess was in a mood and it was too early to pick a fight. She sat back down in the kitchen and went back to the paper.

“You have to tell her Claire.” Meg said as she placed Claire’s coffee on the table.

“She’s in a mood, Meg. You know what she’s like.”

“Yeah, worse then you.”

“Anyway she’ll see Cory up there.” Tess came running down the stairs at full speed and into the kitchen. She stood for a moment to catch her breath.

“There is a girl asleep on my bed, why?”

“Well it is morning and I thought you wouldn’t be needing it because you were always using Nick’s so I rented it out.” Claire realised it wasn’t the best time for jokes.

“Ha, ha. What’s the real reason?” Claire grabbed her coffee and stood up.

“Let’s talk about this on the veranda Tess.”

Tess sat down on the step as Claire paced back and forth in front of her trying to think of the right words to explain the situation. Tess fidgeted a bit before asking,

“What’ the story Claire?” Claire sat down next to Tess and smiled nervously.

“Okay… um. The girl up stairs she,” Claire stopped for a minute to think and then continued, “her name is Cory. Cory Shae McLeod.” Tess gasped

“What is she, a cousin or something?” Claire shook her head.

“She’s our sister, dad’s youngest daughter.” Tess wasn’t too sure what was happening.

“What do you mean Claire, we don’t have another sister.”

“We do Tess. I know it, Meg knows it and even the Ryan’s know.”

“I didn’t know.”

“When you left with your mum, dad was having an affair. A few moths later he married the woman when he found out she was pregnant.” Tess stared into the distance to shocked to speak. Claire continued, “I’m not too sure why nobody told you. When Cory left with her mum. No body talked about it. I guess, with me in hospital and…”

“What?” This last line caught Tess’ attention. Her big sister was in hospital and she had never known it. What was with Meg always saying that Claire never got sick, she must have hurt herself somehow, but it still didn’t make sense? “You were in hospital? But you’re never sick Claire.” Tess continued.

“Look it was just…” Claire was silenced by the sound of Alex coming up the driveway on his motorbike. She bolted in his direction. Saved by the bike. She thought to herself as she rubbed her eye to keep back the tear that was forming.

Alex stopped his bike and took his helmet off as Claire came running over to him. He smiled at her trying to keep the thoughts in his head where they were. But Claire was so beautiful. Of course she didn’t dress or act like a girl, but she looked gorgeous. Especially when she smiled.

“Whoa McLeod, what’s the rush? I’ve never had such a happy greeting at Drovers.” Claire playfully punched Alex in the arm.

“Someone here would really like to see you, Ryan.” Alex grinned,

“Oh yeah and who would that be?” Claire grabbed his arm and dragged him inside.

Cory yawned as she walked down the stairs in her pyjamas. Her feet dragged along the carpet as she turned into the kitchen. She blinked, once, twice. Everyone was there including an ultra cutie. She smiled and sat down to breakfast. Meg placed a plate of eggs and bacon in front of her.

“Good morning everyone.” She smiled around the room as she poured a glass of orange juice. Claire sat next to her and watched her every move.

“Notice anything?” She asked as Cory picked up a piece of bacon. Cory stared at Alex for a minute and nodded, not breaking eye contact.

“Do you remember who he is?” Cory continued to stare at Alex until she saw it. The mischievous twinkle in his eye. A look of bewilderment passed over her face,

“Alex?” Alex grinned.

“In the flesh, kiddo. What are you doing parading around these parts again?”

“I wanted to see some friendly faces for a change.” The room went quiet. Alex and Claire exchanged troubled looks. Meg put down her fork,

“Jodi, could you and Becky go and check the fences?”

“But…”

“No buts Jodi. It was pretty windy and you know how those fences are.” Jodi and Becky stood up and walked out the back door, leaving Claire, Meg, Alex and Cory in silence. Claire was first to speak.

“Cory what’s wrong?” Cory rolled her eyes,

“Nothing.” She stared at her plate, not daring to look up.

“There has to be something wrong.” Claire scolded herself at this as she realised she said the wrong thing. Cory stood up abruptly.

“I didn’t realise that there had to be something wrong for me to come and see my sister. Jeez Claire! Not everyone goes running from home for help. And you can’t always protect me. Oh yeah, you already knew that.” Cory turned on her heel and ran out into the paddock. She stood up on the fence close to Blaze and stoked her back.

“Hello, what’s your name?” Cory asked the beautiful horse. After about two minutes of waiting for a reply Cory decided there wouldn’t be one and kept talking. “You must be one of Claire’s horses. I’m in such a mess you know. I’ve really hurt Claire now, I know I have. She would have tried, if she had the strength, to come and help me. I’ve really hurt her.” Tess suddenly appeared next to her, sitting on the fence. She smiled,

“You know, Claire is very strong now. Whatever happened in the past, she won’t let happen again. So don’t worry. I’m sure she knows that you didn’t mean to say anything bad Cory.”

“How do you know my name?”

“Claire’s told me about you. I’m Tess.” Cory shook hands with Tess and jumped down from the fence.

“Do you work here too?” Tess couldn’t contain her laughter.

“Obviously Claire hasn’t got around to telling you about me. I’m your sister.” Cory’s eyes widened. She took a minute or two to digest what she was hearing.

“Two older sisters. So where were you when I was living here?” Tess smiled and put her arm around Cory’s shoulders.

“My mum left and took me with her.”

“I understand what that’s like. Claire was all I had, then mum took me away from her.” As they walked back to the house Tess told Cory all about living in the city and then moving back home. But Cory kept to herself and didn’t say too much about her past.

Chapter 4: Surprises

The day was going slowly for Becky. It seemed like a regular day except for one thing. Becky sighed as she climbed down the windmill. She dropped the monkey wrench into the toolbox and put it in the truck. They don’t even have to pay attention to me, just say ‘hi’. She thought as she turned on the engine. Her birthday and nobody even cared. They had all forgotten.

“What’s up?” Becky jumped at the voice behind her. She turned to find Cory in the backseat.

“How long have you been in here?” Cory pondered this question for a minute or two.

“I got in about a minute ago, while you were up there.” Cory pointed at the top of the windmill and continued, “I thought it best if I waited till you were in the car, because I didn’t want to scare you while you were all the way up there.” Becky nodded.

“Sounds reasonable.” She started driving back toward the house as Cory climbed into the front seat.

“So what’s wrong Becky?”

“What do you mean?”

‘You’ve been so distant today. You’re not talking to anyone...”

“Not that they want to talk to me.” Becky cut in. Cory looked at her in shock. How could anyone think something like that, especially Becky?

“They do Beck. We all love you, you’re part of our family.”

“Thanks Cory. But it’s my birthday today and nobody has said anything.” Cory put her hand on Becky’s shoulder and shook her head.

“I’ll talk to them if you want.” Becky couldn’t stop herself from giggling.

“No it’s alright Cory, I can handle it.”

The phone was silent. No matter how hard she stared at it, the phone just sat there and did nothing. It felt like forever to Claire as she just sat on her bed with the cordless phone on her bedside table. He hadn’t called and she was getting annoyed. She was pretty sure that she would yell at the next person that called, whether it was he or not. Then it happened. The noise filled the room. Claire grabbed at the phone and answered it.

“Claire McLeod.” The voice on the other end was not who she expected. It was a woman, the voice she hadn’t heard in nine years.

“Well, well, well. Claire Louise McLeod. Who’d have thought that you would still be living at that dump.” Claire’s smile disappeared.

“What do you want Miranda?” There was a low laugh coming from the phone. Claire was amazed that Miranda still sounded like an evil cartoon when she laughed.

“How’s the head Claire? It wasn’t looking that good when I last saw you.” Claire cringed.

“What do you want Miranda?” She asked through clenched teeth.

“Oh come now Claire, I was just wondering if you had seen my daughter, you remember Corelli don’t you?” Claire thought quickly.

“I haven’t seen her for nine years Miranda. What make you think she would be here?” Miranda tensed up and thought about this.

“Don’t lie to me Claire. You and I both know she would run to you first.”

“Think what you want Miranda. I haven’t seen your precious Corelli for years. Goodbye.” Claire hung up the phone and smiled, “But I have recently seen Cory.”

Cory bounded up the stairs to see Claire when she reached the house, for two reasons. She had been thinking about Becky and knew that Claire wouldn’t just forget about something like a birthday. So it was either a surprise or she had her mind on other things. Which was the second reason for bounding up the stairs. Cory could hear Alex Ryan coming a mile away. She lost track of where she was going and knocked over Claire as she came out of her bedroom.

“Whoa Cory.” They fell to the ground with a thump.

“Sorry Claire, I guess I should be a bit more careful. Claire nodded as she painfully rubbed the shoulder she had landed on.

“I was on my way to find you, what’s the rush?”

“Well I kind of needed to talk to you about something. You know, girl to girl, sister to sister.” Claire didn’t quite follow where this was leading.

“What is it?” Cory helped Claire up and they walked down the hall to Cory’s room. Claire sat down on Cory’s bed as Cory shut the door.

“Okay firstly, what are you doing about Becky?” Claire gave her ‘sorry-I’m-not-understanding’ look and Cory continued, “Claire, I know you’re not one to forget a birthday. So what’s going on?”

“Don’t tell me I forgot to tell you. We are having a surprise party for Becky tonight.”

“Oh okay, I understand now.” Claire smiled,

“What was the other thing?”

“Oh, yes, that.” Cory sat next to Claire on the bed and nervously smiled at her. “Well, I’ve noticed something in the last week or so that I’ve been here.” Claire nodded.

“And that is…”

“Ah…” Cory shifted around a bit to get more comfortable, “You know what I’m about to say Claire. So I won’t say it. All I’ll say is your heart must always come first.” The sound of a motorbike outside came through Cory’s open window. She jumped up; “Alex is here.” She winked at Claire and ran out the door and up to see Becky. Claire sat for a moment thinking about what she had said. Your heart must always come first. Alex is he… Hold on a minute. Claire suddenly realised what Cory was talking about. That little devil planned it like this. She knew he was coming.

That night all serious thoughts were forgotten. No use thinking during a party. The look of shock on Becky’s face when she walked into the room was priceless. They had cleared out the living room and placed a disco ball hanging from the ceiling. Becky knew everyone in the room. Nick and Alex, Claire, Tess and Cory were all there with a coupled of mates that they usually saw when they went to the pub. But the one thing that caught Becky’s eye as she entered the room was Cory’s mischievous smile.

The music played through the night and Becky had the time of her life. Claire walked up to her and handed her a beautifully wrapped present.

“This is from Cory, Tess and myself.” Becky threw her arms around Claire and hugged her.

“Thankyou.” She ripped the resent opened and almost cried. In her lap was a book, and not just any old book. This was a book she had heard so much about. Claire had bought her a copy of Gone With the Wind. She couldn’t believe it.

“We thought that maybe it could be a sort of reward when you had learnt all you needed to.” Becky nodded. At this point she couldn’t stop the flow of tears that rolled down her cheek.

“Thankyou Claire it’s exactly what I wanted.”

“Well, how about I put it in a safe place for awhile. I believe someone wants to dance.” Becky was puzzled. Claire pointed to the far corner where someone was standing. Becky stood up and walked over to the corner. To her surprise the person slipped their hand around her waist and kissed her cheek. Brick could always find ways to surprise her.

The music followed Claire all the way to the study where she put Becky’s book on her fathers’ old desk. She stared at the cover for a minute. A beautiful picture of Scarlett and Rhett was on the cover. Their love could easily be seen in the way that they looked at each other. Claire continued to stare at the cover as her mind stared toying with her. The picture was suddenly changing. No longer was it Scarlett and Rhett; it was now Claire and Alex. Cory’s right, you know she is. A sudden movement in the corner of her eye snapped her back to reality. Alex had his arms crossed and was leaning against the doorframe watching Claire.

“How long have you been standing there Ryan?” Claire asked as she walked towards him.

“Not long. Why aren’t you joining in with the others? Brick has just suggested ‘spin the bottle’ and we need another guy.” He softly punched her shoulder. Claire thought about it for a minute.

“Spin the bottle.” She tried to make it sound as if she’d never heard of it before.

“Don’t tell me you don’t know how to play ‘spin the bottle’ Claire.” Claire innocently shook her head.

“I’ve heard of it. I believe it goes something like this.” Claire stepped forward and kissed Alex. But not just any kiss. This was ‘the’ kiss. Claire slowly moved her arms around his neck and parted his lips with her tongue. Alex was surprised. He hadn’t expected Claire to do this. He thought she just wanted to be friends and that’s why he kept his distance. But how could he help himself, it was Claire. He’d fallen for her hard the moment he saw her. His hands were sliding gently up and down her back. Claire couldn’t understand it but she wouldn’t let herself move away from Alex. But what if he just thinks of me as another one to tick off the list? Claire suddenly pulled away from Alex and felt as if he had moved miles away. The need to be so close to him again was growing and she couldn’t stop it from reaching the surface. Alex looked into her eyes,

“What’s wrong Claire?” She had turned her head and backed away a little from him to try not giving in to temptation. But it was too hard to deny herself the feelings she felt as soon as they had joined. Alex brought his hand up to Claire’s cheek and forced her to face him once more. Hear we go again. Thought Claire as she opened her eyes to Alex once more and couldn’t help moving as close as she could to him. Once again the tension hit the roof and Claire lunged at Alex.

Chapter 5: Storm Warning

The sun shone through the window and made a perfect line along the floor and up onto the bed. Tess rolled over as the birds sang in the trees. She opened one eye and look out the window. Sure it was day but she was so tired. She rolled over again and found herself facing Nick. Then she remembered why she was tired. A romantic dinner to celebrate their one-year anniversary of being together had turned into a night of passion that hadn’t finished until they actually found the bed. Tess got out of bed and went into the bathroom to take a shower.

It had been a month since Becky’s party and Claire hadn’t noticed. She had lost track of time the moment she kissed Alex. There was a knock at her bedroom door. She quickly got up and grabbed her dressing gown before opening the door slightly. Cory was standing on the other side.

“Yes?” Claire asked in hope that Cory would just leave straight away so she could go back to bed. But alas she stood there and the conversation continued.

“Meg asked me to tell you that because you slept in you’ve missed breakfast because she has to take me to school.” Claire smacked herself in the head.

“Sorry Cory. I totally forgot that I was going to drive you to school for your first day.”

“Don’t worry Claire.” Cory kissed Claire on the cheek and turned to go downstairs, but instead stopped. She turned back around and said on finale thing. “Say good morning to Alex when he wakes up.”

“What!” Claire couldn’t believe it. She watched Cory run downstairs and thought about running after her to find out how much she knew. But then there was Alex, asleep in her bed. Who couldn’t say ‘no’ to that. She silently closed the door, slipped off her dressing gown and climbed back into bed with Alex.

Cory crossed the main street and ran over to the coffee shop to grab some lunch with Becky, who was sitting quietly waiting for her. They sat down and talked while they ate their lunch about Cory’s life in Perth. Cory saw Becky as a best friend and told her everything, from what happened when she left Drovers to making her way back. When they had finished they stood up and walked to the truck. Still talking they hugged and then said goodbye as Becky got in the truck to go back to drovers and Cory headed back to school. Neither of them noticed a man in his early thirties sitting in a car outside the pub taking photos of them.

Chapter 6: Into The Public Eye

The gravel on the driveway almost seemed to be parting by itself as Claire paced back and fourth. The sound of Alex’s bike was coming into earshot and they seriously needed to talk. Claire looked up to see Cory standing at the front door.

“Aren’t you supposed to be at school?” Cory laughed and walked down to where Claire was.

“Jeez Claire, whatever it is that has got you so worked up is screwing with your brain.”

“What do you mean?” Claire stopped pacing and stared at Cory.

“I don’t go to school on a Sunday.”

“Right, I know that. Just checking.” Cory hugged Claire.

“Who was on the phone a minute ago?” Claire suddenly backed out of Cory’s embrace. Cory was puzzled. Claire could see it in her face. What’s wrong with her? Who was on the phone? Cory thought.

“Ah, yeah. I meant to talk to you about that.” The two of them sat down on the steps. “Cory, The phone call was from Miranda. And it hasn’t been the first.” Cory gasped.

“What did you say to her?” Claire put her hand on Cory’s shoulder.

“I didn’t tell her anything. The first phone call she asked if I had seen you. I said ‘no’ and hung up on her. This time she told me she has proof that you’re here and she’ll make sure she gets you back.” Cory hung her head as Claire tried to comfort her. There is no way that bitch is going to take you away from me again. This time I’ll get the advantage, I don’t know how but I will. Claire thought as Cory stood up and walked towards the front door. She turned on her heel to face Claire one last time.

“She won’t take me again. I’ll make sure she doesn’t even have a chance to hurt you next time.” With that Cory walked inside, letting the door swing shut behind her. The words ‘next time’ rang through Claire’s head. She didn’t want it to come but knew that it would.

“What’s the long face for McLeod?” Claire looked up to see Alex smiling down at her. She hadn’t even heard the bike, but he was there now and that’s what really mattered.

“Just some problems with Cory, but that’s not what I asked you here to discuss.” Claire stood up and motioned for him to follow her.

The sky was glowing a bright orange as Jodi sat in her room. She had been forgotten. Alberto was supposed to come pick her up, but there was no sign of him. She stood up, walked around in a circle and sat down again in the same position. Where was he? The phone rang suddenly and Jodi jumped for it.

“Hello, Jodi speaking.”

“Jodi, I’m so sorry, I should have phoned sooner.” Jodi stood up and stamped her foot.

“Alberto, where are you?”

“I’m sorry Jodi. I couldn’t make it because my brother has arrived unexpectedly from Italy today. I didn’t realise he would be coming so soon.” Jodi sighed.

“Well when can we go out.”

“I’ll pick you up tomorrow and we can have a picnic while Luca goes into the city to meet up with come friends that came with him.”

“Okay but don’t forget. Bye.”

“I won’t forget, bye Jodi.” Jodi hung up the phone and fell onto the bed. The first time a guy had ditched her, and for family reasons. So unfair!

The door squeaked a bit as Claire silently closed it behind her. Alex sat on her bed waiting for her to say something. Claire walked over and sat down next to him. Ah oh, thought Alex, What’s this about? Have I done something wrong? Is she going to break up with me?

“I wanted to talk about us, Alex.” Alex tried to stay calm as he nodded for her to continue. “You see, we’ve been together for two months now. And I was thinking that maybe…” Alex suddenly caught on to where this talk was heading and butted in.

“You want to make it official.” Claire nodded, Thankyou so much for saying that for me, she thought. Alex put his arm around her and pulled her closer to him. “I think that’s a great idea, but for the moment I have a better one.” Claire raised an eyebrow.

“Really and what’s that?” Alex wickedly smiled and moved in on her. He gently pushed her backward onto the bed. With one hand and one knee on either side of her, Claire wouldn’t even have a chance if she wanted to get up. But obviously that would be plain stupid. She raised her head to meet him and their lips locked. Claire’s hands moved swiftly to undo Alex’s shirt. While Alex tongue wrestled her. But that’s as far as they got.

Meg dropped everything as she walked into the room. Claire and Alex quickly sat up and tried to fix the situation. Meg tried her best to hide her laughter,

“I’m so sorry Claire, I didn’t realise you where in here.” Claire couldn’t contain a soft giggle any longer. Alex didn’t help the situation by buttoning up his shirt wrong.

“It’s okay Meg, really. Alex and I were just about to go downstairs anyway.” She turned to help Alex fix up his shirt while Meg picked up the shirts she had dropped onto the floor.

“Well I’ll just leave these on the bed for you.” She said as she walked to the bed. “And I’ll see you both downstairs.” Meg quickly walked out the door, closing it behind her. Claire and Alex fell about laughing. Alex stopped and pulled Claire to him.

“You should smile and laugh more often McLeod.”

“And why’s that?” She smiled.

“Because it makes your whole face brighten up and you look like an angel.” Claire kissed him.

“That’s nice. You’re good at saying really nice things Alex. But for now, we have to break the news to your family and mine.” She pulled away from him and walked to the door. “You coming.”

“I’ll go anywhere with you.” They held hands and walked downstairs together.

Chapter 7: Unwanted Return

The wind howled during the night, but no one awoke. Nick watched as Tess softly breathed in and out as she slept. As he watched her he thought about the events of the past week. Alex and Claire, who would have thought and dad, actually seems okay with the whole thing. Claire has everything she needs right now. Which means that Tess is content and not worrying about her sister’s bad moods or anything. Poor Tess, she doesn’t understand how close Claire is to Cory. She seems very distant whenever someone mentions either of them now. Hopefully someone will tell her what happened with those two. Too bad it won’t be Claire. Tess suddenly started squirming around under the sheets. Nick watched, as she seemed to wrestle with an invisible thought.

“CLAIRE! CLAIRE!” She screamed. Nick panicked and started to shake her trying to wake her up. But she stayed asleep screaming for Claire. Nick wasn’t sure what to do, how could he calm her down? Luckily he was saved when the bedroom door swung open and Claire came running in.

“What happened Nick?” She asked as she climbed onto the bed and rested her head on Tess’ chest. Her heart rate was accelerated as usual. She needed to calm Tess down.

“I don’t know, she was perfectly fine until now. She just started kicking and scratching, then shouting your name.” Nick was out of bed now watching Claire as she tried to calm Tess down.

“CLAIRE!” Tess screamed again. Claire stroked her forehead,

“Shh I’m here Tess, I’m here.” Tess was starting to slow her breathing. Her legs slowed their kicking and her arms fell onto her stomach. Claire continued to soothe her, “Shh Tess, you’re okay now, I’m here with you.” The screaming had stopped but Tess continued to say Claire’s name.

“Claire.” Claire laid nest to her.

“I’m right here Tess.” As she attempted to sit up Tess draped her arm around Claire’s waist.

“Claire.” She whispered, “I don’t want you to go away.” Claire lay back down. And turned onto her side while whispering to Tess.

“I wasn’t going anywhere Tess. No where at all.” As soon as Claire knew Tess was sleeping soundly again Claire slowly got up from the bed and motioned for Nick to follow her out into the hallway. Nick stood in the cold hallway in his boxers as Claire informed him of the situation. “Tess used to have these nightmares when she was little. In that situation she can get very worked up, which is bad for her. If that happens again. You have to get whoever she is calling for. You can’t soothe her if she is calling for me, her subconscious wants to hear the persons voice.” Nick nodded. “And next time it happens, DON’T try to wake her up. She’ll just start to panic more once she opens her eyes.” Claire turned and walked back to her bedroom. Nick let out a sigh and ran his fingers through his hair. Why didn’t Tess tell me about this? He thought as he walked back into Tess’ bedroom and climbed into bed.

The day had been extremely boring for Cory. She had double maths and a surprise chemistry test. She was glad Claire had arranged a ride home with one of her friends so she didn’t have to wait around for someone to pick her up. The car pulled up at the front door and Cory climbed out clutching onto her bag.

“C’ya Molly, thanks Mrs Tyler.”

“No problem Cory, if you ever need a lift again don’t hesitate to ask.”

“I’ll see you tomorrow Cory.”

“Bye Mole.” Cory waved to Molly as the car drove back to the road. She turned and ran into the house. A note on the front door informed her that everyone was up in the back paddock fixing on of the fences and if there was a problem she had to call Alex or Claire’s mobile. Cory rolled her eyes. Claire had become so protective of her since the phone call from Miranda. There is no way that my mother would be able to remember the way to Gungellan. Cory thought as she dropped her bag in her bedroom and walked back downstairs. She grabbed herself an orange juice and walked over to the stables. She would have her very own horse on the weekend. It would be so much fun. Cory walked back outside when she heard someone coming up the driveway. This might be Alex. She thought as she stepped outside. But she was wrong. Alex didn’t drive a blue mustang. Only one person she could think of did. The shock caused Cory to drop her glass. It onto the grass and spilt orange juice everywhere. She ran in the front door just as her mother stopped the car outside.

“CORELLI!” She shouted as Cory slammed the door behind her and bolted it. What could she do? Her eyes skipped over the scene in front of her. Alex. Cory grabbed the phone as she ran upstairs to her room. She couldn’t recall the last three numbers for Claire’s mobile so she quickly pressed speed dial one to get Alex. It was times like this you had to be glad that your sister was sleeping with your next-door neighbour.

“Hi this is Alex, I can’t be bothered picking up my phone so leave a message and I’ll call you back.” Cory huddled in the corner of her room as the message played on the phone.

“Alex it’s Cory. I’m in my bedroom, Mum’s outside and I can’t get Claire!” She hung up quick and dialled the Gungellan police station. She could hear footsteps on the stairs and realised she’d forgotten to lock the other doors. Her mother was there.

“Hello, Frank. It’s Cory. I need…” Miranda stepped through the door.

“Hello, hello. Cory are you there.” Frank called through the handset. Miranda walked over and turned the phone off. She grabbed Cory’s arm and pulled her to her feet.

“Well, well, well Corelli. Disobeying your mother can get you into a lot of trouble.” Cory screamed as Miranda’s hand tightened around her arm and twisted it. “Now we are going home.”

“NO!” Cory screamed trying her best to dig her heels into the wooden floor. But it wasn’t working. She grabbed onto the doorframe as she slide through. “Leave me alone!”

“Stop this nonsense!” Miranda yelled at her and continued to drag her down to the car.

Alex’s phone beeped. Liz sat in the study and watched it. She jumped when Alex suddenly appeared and put his hand on her shoulder.

“Don’t scare me like that Alex.” She said breathing deeply.

“Sorry mum.”

“Your phone rang a minute ago.” Alex moved towards it.

“Did you answer it?” Liz shook her head,

“It said McLeod, so I thought I’d leave it in case it was a private call.” Alex called his voicemail number and sat on the desk. Liz watched him carefully, waiting to find out what was happening. Alex was surprised when the voice he heard was Cory’s. “Alex it’s Cory. I’m in my bedroom, Mum’s outside and I can’t get Claire!” The panic in her voice gave Alex goosebumps. He quickly hung up his phone and ran to get his car keys.

“Alex, what’s wrong?” Liz called as she hurried to catch up with him.

“That was Cory. Miranda’s at the house.” Alex replied as he searched for his keys.

“What!” Liz cried as she grabbed her own keys and ran out to her car with Alex in tow. They weren’t about to let history repeat itself.

Claire screamed out as the barbed wire cut into her face. She raised her hand up to the cut to try and soothe the pain. Tess ran to her, followed closely by Meg, while Jodi and Becky tried to fix the place where the wire had snapped.

“Claire are you okay.”

“Yeah, I’m fine Tess.” She slowly moved her hand away from her face revealing a deep gash from the middle of her forehead to her cheek. “How’s it look?” She asked as she wiped the blood on her shirt.

“Jeez, you’ve almost you’re eye.” Meg hit her over the back of the head. “What?” Meg pulled a clean handkerchief from her pocket and placed it over the cut, totally covering Claire’s right eye.

“We need to get you to the surgery.” Claire flinched as the hanky touched the wound.

“Oh come on Meg it can’t be that bad.”

“Claire it need’s stitches and has to be checked for infections.”

“Fine!” Claire said and mounted Blaze. Meg shook her head,

“You’re not going to be able to ride back to the house with one eye covered.”

“Why, I could do it with both of them covered.” Claire remarked with disappointment. Meg mounted [find out the name of Meg’s horse] and moved in front of Claire.

“I’ll lead you back.” Claire slumped her shoulders in defeat as she handed Meg the reins.

Halfway back Meg spotted a car on the road headed for Drover’s in a hurry. She nudged Claire and pointed towards it.

“Is that Alex?” Claire turned to look ad nodded. “I wonder what’s wrong.” Meg continued as Claire watched the Ute get closer and closer to Drover’s. Then a thought crossed her mind.

“Cory.” She grabbed the reins of Meg shoved the hanky in her pocket and galloped to the house.

“Let go of me!” Cory protested through her teeth. Then she got an idea. If it won’t stop her from taking me it will at least buy me some time. Cory quickly pulled her mother’s arm towards her and bit down hard.

“Ah! You little cow.” Miranda yelled as she let go of Cory’s arm. Cory tried to make a run for it, but Miranda’s arm shot out and grabbed her again. This time pulling her in close and wrapping both arms around her chest. Cory kicked and screamed, but nothing could stop Miranda now. She couldn’t even reach her head down far enough to bite. Miranda threw her in the car seat and did up the seatbelt tight. It was one of those ones that go over each shoulder and around the middle. I can’t believe this. My own mother is kidnapping me. I’m definitely writing into NEW IDEA about this. Cory thought as Miranda closed the door and started to make her way around the other side. She turned as she heard the sound of a horse coming towards her. Before she realised what was happening Claire’s boot intercepted with her shoulder and she was down on the ground. Claire dismounted and walked back to Miranda who was clinging to her shoulder as she stood up. The blood from Claire’s cut had almost covered half her face after being pushed back in the wind.

“Who has the advantage now Miranda.” Miranda cackled. Alex pulled up in his Ute about the same time Meg arrived. He was about to run to help Claire but Meg and Liz stopped him.

“She has to do this alone Alex.” Meg told him. Miranda was looking at the blood on Claire’s face.

“I shouldn’t waste my breath. Look’s like you’ve already been in a cat fight.” She walked up to Claire and spat at her feet. “Give my regards to your father.” That was it. Claire wasn’t going to hurt her, but Miranda had crossed the line. Claire lunged at her, punching her in the jaw.

“Good on ya Claire, use that right hook.”

“Alex, don’t encourage this sort of thing.” Liz smacked him over the back of the head then turned back to see how it was going and yelled. “Scratch her eyes out Claire.” Alex couldn’t do anything but shake his head and smile at his mother. Cory had got out of the car and was standing by Meg. She hid her face in Meg’s shoulder as she saw Miranda push Claire away. Claire flung onto her back. Both women stood up quickly and faced each other. Jodi, Becky and Tess dismounted and watched in anticipation.

“It’s just like one of those old western movies.” Tess whispered to Becky and Jodi. They nodded, not taking their eyes off Claire.

“Well Claire, you still have a bit of spirit in you.” Miranda sneered. “But it didn’t help you last time and it’s not going to help this time.”

“You’re not going to take her again Miranda.”

“Who’s going to stop me?” Everyone moved behind Claire for support. Miranda smiled. “Ooh looks like you have all your little friends to help you. Face it, they couldn’t help if they tried.” She caught Liz’s eye. “Liz will scream as soon as she breaks a nail. And as if Alex would protect you, He’d be too scared his daddy would be angry.” Before Alex could move in for the kill another person had already knocked Miranda out cold. Everyone was in awe. Liz rubbed her knuckles.

“Nobody makes my son sound like a wimp and gets away with it.” Everyone laughed. Suddenly they turned to see Frank arrive in his police car.

“Well, well, ladies what have we here?” Frank asked as he walked towards Miranda’s unconscious body. Alex and Claire greeted Frank and tried to explain the situation.

The cool night air was welcoming the change at Drovers. Cory was fast asleep after an eventful day, Alex had gone back to Killarney with Liz (praising her all the way) and Claire had stayed in her room since Frank escorted Miranda off the premises. Tess sat with Meg out on the veranda looking at the stars. They sat in silence until Tess finally asked the question that had been nagging at her,

“Meg?”

“Hmm.” Answered Meg still staring at the night sky.

“What happened?” Meg was suddenly pulled back to earth and she turned to look at Tess.

“What do you mean Tess?” Tess placed her tea on the table in front of her.

“With Cory and Claire.” Meg sighed and also placed her mug on the table. “ When I first met Cory I heard her say ‘. I’ve really hurt Claire now, I know I have. She would have tried, if she had the strength, to come and help me.’ What did she mean by that.”

“It happened when Cory was little she would have been about six years old. Jack and Miranda had a huge fight and Miranda packed her bags and left, leaving Cory with us. Claire stayed with her that night and told her that she would always protect her. Because Miranda was always hitting her and punishing her for things she didn’t do. Then two weeks later while Claire was playing a game with Cory, out where the veggie patch is, Miranda arrived. Jack was with Harry and some mates fixing up the water tanks. I’m not sure how he knew but he came as fast as he could. I can still remember looking out the window and seeing him on his horse galloping home. I hadn’t realised why until he screamed my name out. When I went out to the veggie patch…” Meg was cut off.

“She saw me.” Claire stood in the doorway watching them. “I was lying on my stomach, there was blood everywhere. Miranda had come up from behind me and hit me over the head with a pipe or something. The last thing I remember seeing was Cory screaming for me. She was crying as Miranda pulled her to the car, like today. I tried to get up to help but I couldn’t.” tears started to roll down Claire’s cheeks faster and faster.

“It’s okay Claire, you couldn’t do anything.” Meg cooed as she hugged Claire.

“I could have tried Meg, I could have tried.” She cried softly into Meg’s shoulder. Tess stood up and moved towards them

“I’m sorry Claire, I didn’t know.”

Chapter 8: A Different Claire

A whole year had passed since Cory arrived at Drovers Run. She, Claire and Tess had been through hell with a vicious custody battle to make Claire her legal guardian. The fact that she would be living in a stable home with her guardian in a sturdy marriage really helped the situation. Cory smiled at the photos on her bookshelf. Her favourite photo had be blown up and hung on the wall above her bed. It showed Cory, Tess and Claire on their horses with their arms around each other. It’s great to be back with Claire at Drovers. She thought as she picked up a photo of herself with Claire outside the front door a few moments after Claire and Alex had married. Another photo of Tess showing off her engagement ring was next to it. Cory smiled. Claire and Alex, Tess and Nick, it’s just gorgeous to think about. Cory placed the photo back down as Claire walked into the room.

“Hey Cory.” She smiled sweetly at her sister. That smile hasn’t left her face for a moment since she married Alex. She’s happy. Cory thought as they both sat down on the bed.

“Hey Claire, what’s up?”

“I need to ask a favour.” Cory smiled at her older sister, wondering just where this would lead.

“Sure Claire, anything. What is it?”

“Meg’s going to stay at the hotel, Tess is staying at Nick’s place, Jodi has a date and is staying with him and Becky is going to the cinema and staying at the hotel.” Claire stopped for a slight breather. Cory suddenly understood what the favour was.

“You want me out of the house because it’s Alex’s birthday.” Claire breathed a sigh of relief and nodded. “Sure, that’s fine with me Claire.”

“Becky wanted to know if you want to go to the movies with her.” Cory jumped up.

“Yes. I’ll run down and tell her.” She stopped at the door. And turned back to her sister. “Claire?”

“Hmm.” Claire replied.

“I know what you’re trying to do.” Claire snapped out of her daydream and looked towards Cory. “And I just wanted to say, Good luck.” She ran down the stairs to find Becky. Claire lay back on Cory’s bed deep in thought. I don’t know how she knows but I’m glad she’s happy about the whole thing. Well hopefully things will run smoothly tonight and everything will be fine.

Becky sat in the car waiting for Cory. She takes her damn time, there’s on thing she has in common with Tess. Suddenly Claire appeared at the window.

“She’s on her way down.”

“Finally. She’s taking forever.” Becky yawned. Claire laughed for a minute before becoming serious.

“Look after her tonight for me Beck. I don’t want her to get hurt.” She rubbed the old scar on her forehead from the barbed wire incident. Becky smiled at Claire.

“Don’t worry Claire. I asked Brick to come with us. She’ll be fine.” Claire smiled as Cory jumped in the passenger seat next to Becky. “Well, looks like we’re off. Bye Claire.”

“Bye, have a nice time.”

“You too.” Cory winked at Claire just before Becky drove off.

Claire littered the bedroom with candles. Then went back downstairs to finish off the table for dinner. When she walked into the dinning room she remembered that Meg had already done the table and dinner for her. She hoped everything would work the way she had planned. The whole afternoon she had thought about exactly what would happen. She suddenly snapped back to earth as she heard Alex pull up in the driveway. He’d been gone all day discussing some important matters with his father. She looked at the clock and realised she had been daydreaming for at least half an hour. What’s wrong with you McLeod? You’ve never been a daydream girl. She thought as she ran into the kitchen to get their meals out of the oven where they were being kept warm. She then greeted Alex at the door with a passionate kiss. Alex almost collapsed from the life she had sucked out of him.

“Wow, I should go away for a day more often.”

“Don’t you dare Alexander.” She playfully slapped him on the arm and led him into the dinning room.

The dinner was quickly devoured as Alex thought about exactly what his wife would do to him when they finished. Claire stood up and walked towards him.

“How bout you have a nice warm bath so you’re totally relaxed and when you’re finished I’ll give you you’re birthday present.” She whispered seductively in Alex’s ear. Alex pulled her down onto her lap and kissed her neck. He whimpered like a lost puppy as he came up.

“But I want my birthday present now.” Claire smiled and kissed his lips, but before h could even attempt to get his tongue in on the action she stood up and walked to the door.

“Only if you’re a good boy and do exactly what I tell you to.” Alex nodded and followed her upstairs and into the bathroom where she had prepared a warm bath for him. “I’ll meet you in the bedroom.” Alex smiled as Claire walked out of the bathroom closing the door behind her.

The curtains were pulled shut and the room was alight with candles when Alex opened the door to the bedroom he now shared with the love of his life. Claire lay on the bed in a black lace negligée waiting for him. Alex could not hide the shock on his face. This can’t be my Claire. She would never do something like this. He moved to the bed and climbed on top of her pinning her down.

“What have you done with my Claire?” Alex asked as she played with the elastic in his boxer shorts.

“I locked her away in her own heart so I could come out to play.” Claire seductively joked. Alex slipped the negligée down over Claire’s shoulders and placed soft kisses on each shoulder. Claire cupped his jaw and moved his head to hers. Her tongue darted into his mouth and kept the passion going while Alex removed the negligée intirerly. He broke away from her lips and started to place gentle butterfly kisses down her chest and stomach. He didn’t notice Claire cringe as he cupped her breasts and kissed the back of her neck. Claire couldn’t think of another way to stop him then to use all her strength and take over the mission. She brought her hands to his shoulders and quickly flipped them both over exchanging positions. Alex let go off her, startled by this sudden need to be the leader. Claire kissed Alex and slowly removed his boxers. She wasn’t sure why but she had a strong need to be in control. She sat up and slid herself down onto Alex her hormones went crazy and she could no longer go at their gentle, loving pace. No, for the first time wanted it all. She couldn’t handle just having Alex inside her anymore. She wanted the power and the speed that she knew he had inside waiting for the moment.

“God, I love you Alex.” She breathed as they lay together under the bed sheets.

“I love you more Claire.” Alex grinned up at the ceiling.

“We’ll just have to see about that.” Claire said as she moved on top of Alex for round two. “Happy birthday Alex.” She said as they got started. WOW. Alex thought. Either she’s trying to butter me up to tell me something really bad or she’s changed. I’ve never known her to go like this, and twice in one night. I must be in heaven.

Sunlight wasn’t what woke Claire up in the morning, although for once she would have preferred it. An aching pain in her stomach woke her and forced her to sneak out the room and run to the bathroom. The pain in her stomach rushed up through her throat as Claire vomited into the toilet. She sat for a moment and screwed up her face as she felt the hot pain begin to rise again. She stood up ten minutes later and looked in the mirror. Her face was flushed and sweaty, she quickly drank some water and jumped into the shower.

Alex awoke to find Claire putting on some pyjamas and slipping back into bed. He draped his arm over her, and she wiggled to the edge of the bed to get out from under it. He sat up and rolled her over to face him.

“What have I done Claire?” She tried to roll back over but he stopped her. “Claire, answer me. Last night was the best night of my life and now you won’t talk to me?” Claire suddenly moved to get out of the bed, but Alex wouldn’t allow it.

“Alex, I don’t feel well, and if you don’t move I’ll throw up all over you.” Claire yelled as Alex quickly moved to let her run to the bathroom. Well at least now I know she’s not pissed with me for something. Alex thought as he got up and put his boxers back on. He waited till Claire came back before he attempted to go for a shower. Claire laid back down on the bed. Alex sat down next to her.

“Are you okay?” He asked placing a hand over her forehead.

“I’ll be fine.” She said. But Alex didn’t believe her. He was sure that he could boil an egg on her head if he wanted to, so he got up and went downstairs to the phone.

Chapter 9: Deadly Surprise

The phone rang for at least twenty minutes. She had no choice she had to pick it up. Meg rolled out of bed and picked up the phone.

“Hello?”

“Meg is that you?” Alex whispered into the phone. Meg stretched out her arms and rubbed her eyes. She glanced at the clock sitting next to the phone.

“Alex it’s six o’clock in the morning. What do you want? And why are you whispering?”

“Sorry Meg I didn’t really think about the time. I’m whispering so that Claire doesn’t hear me. She’s sick Meg, and I don’t know what to do.” Meg sat bolt upright in bed. Claire’s sick, but Claire’s never sick. There has to be some kind of a mistake here.

“Are we talking about the same Claire?”

“Please Meg could you come and see her. She’s pale, hot and vomiting every few minutes.” Alex begged into the phone. Meg realised there really must be something wrong with Claire.

“I’ll be there in a minute Alex.” Meg quickly dialled the room number for Becky and Cory and told them they had to go home.

The room was quiet as Meg, Jodi, Cory, Becky, Alex and Tess waited for the doctor to exit Claire’s room and tell them what was wrong. She’s dying I know she is, she’s never been sick before. Tess thought as she hugged Cory close to her. Becky silently rocked back and fourth with Jodi and Meg’s arms around her shoulders to comfort her. Alex stood up and walked over to the bedroom door and placed his ear against it.

“Anything?” Meg asked anxiously. Alex shook his head and started to pace the hallway. He became extremely fidgety, so much in fact that Meg sent him downstairs to get everyone and drink. Tess jumped as she heard the door handle squeak. The sudden movement woke up Cory, who sat in a daze staring at the door. The handle was turning, but the door wasn’t opening. What was going on? Tess stood up and walked towards the door just as it opened. Doctor Taylor walked out and closed the door behind him. He looked around at everyone sitting outside on the floor.

“Dylan is she okay?” Meg asked as she stood. Doctor Taylor sounded slow and soft as he talked.

“I think I’ll need to talk to Alex and the girls first.” He said nodding towards Tess and Cory. Meg nodded and motioned for Becky and Jodi to stand up.

“Alex is downstairs. Is it okay if we go in and see her.” Doctor Taylor shook his head slowly.

“No, but she did ask to see Becky.” He smiled at Becky as she walked towards the door. “Once Becky is finished anyone can see her, but one at a time.” He smiled to Meg and Jodi and then walked with Tess and Cory downstairs to the kitchen to see Alex.

Becky entered the room cautiously and closed the door behind her. Claire turned her head and half smiled at Becky as she walked over and sat on the bed beside her. Becky noticed the perspiration on her forehead and grabbed for the cold cloth on the bedside table.

“Becky.” Claire almost whispered hoarsely.

“I’m here Claire, the doctor said you wanted to see me.” The wet cloth caused Claire to shudder as it surprised her hot skin. She closed and then opened her eyes.

“I’m very sick, or so says the doctor, and I needed to ask you to look after Cory for me.” Becky attempted to object to this but as soon as she opened her mouth Claire shushed her. “Becky, in my condition I’ not supposed to be this sick.” Becky was puzzled.

A disturbing silence filled the dining room as Alex, Tess and Cory entered with Doctor Taylor, ready to hear what was wrong with Claire. Cory placed a packet of Tim-tams in front of her as she sat with her hot coa-coa. I don’t see why everyone’s depressed; this is Claire Louise McLeod-Ryan we are talking about here. She doesn’t get SERIOUSLY sick. But, I wonder… Cory thought as she watched everyone sit down at the table. She carefully dipped her Tim-tam into her coa-coa and awaited the news she had been expecting for awhile now.

“Well, congratulations Claire is six weeks pregnant.” Alex and Tess weren’t too sure what to think. Should they be excited or in shock? It was obvious everyone believed Claire would never have children, but then again they also thought she would never slow down in the first place and get married. But Cory was too busy thinking about everything from the Doctor’s point of view.

“There’s more isn’t there, Doctor Taylor? Claire shouldn’t be getting morning sickness continuously over a 24 hour period.” Once again the room was silent. Doctor Taylor nodded.

“Claire is a very strong girl, I’ve only ever had to see her about suspected broken bones. She has a very strong immune system, never been sick in her life.” Doctor Taylor stopped for a moment to sip his coffee, and then continued. “Cory is right the morning sickness should only come at a certain time-frame not continuously through a 24 hour period. Claire can’t stop vomiting because her body is not used to this new feeling. Because she has never been sick like this her body doesn’t understand what’s happening and until it work it all out won’t stop the process.”

“Will she and the baby be okay?” Alex asked unable to hide the concern in his voice even if he wanted to. Tess was trying her best to keep her breathing steady, while Cory put her arm around her shoulder.

“We’re unable to tell at this stage Alex. Without being able to keep food down, Claire will get very weak and if she doesn’t stay rested she could miscarry.” Doctor Taylor finished off his coffee, just as his beeper sounded. He looked at it for a moment. “I’m dreadfully sorry, but I really have to go. If you want to know anything else just call me on my mobile.” He flicked a card down to Alex and Tess. They stood and walked out with him, leaving Cory to think about the situation. They would have to tie Claire to the bed. Even if she were going to die in the next second she would want to be working. Claire’s not going to be happy with the doctor’s prescription.

Doctor Taylor climbed into his car and wound down the window to talk to Tess and Alex as they stood outside saying their goodbyes.

“If it gets worse, call me straight away. And remember at any time, I’m sure that it would be fine by Charlotte and myself if Cory came and stayed the night with Molly. She needs friends to talk to other then her family here, and you lot need to only worry about yourselves and Claire.”

“Actually, if you’re able to come around tomorrow, would you mind taking Cory then?” Doctor Taylor nodded and smiled.

“Sure thing Tess. Till tomorrow then.” Tess and Alex waved as he drove down the path. Then they turned to each other a sighed.

“I guess this means everyone at Drovers will be changing their lifestyle.” Alex tried to laugh, but couldn’t. Tess nodded and hugged Alex. “Come on Tess cheer up. We’ve got to be strong for Claire, and the baby.” Alex held her shoulders back at arms’ length.

“I can’t Alex, I can’t bare to think of loosing her.”

“Look at me Tess,” She turned her head to face him. “Neither of us are going to loose Claire. She’s got through worse things then this.” Tess ran inside not knowing what to say or what to do. The only thing she could do was talk to nick. He would understand. He would only be listening to her and not everyone else in the house.

Chapter 10: Hormones, Hormones!

The mood at Drovers Run had changed dramatically once Claire hit six months. It became a race to see who could get out of the house fastest before Claire had the chance to yell at them or cry on their shoulder. Cory was fortunate to be staying at the Taylor’s house and everyone else envied her. It was very unfortunate that this morning, when everyone was tired from trying to stay busy the previous day, that Claire chose to get up early and check how things were going. She slipped out of bed and creeped downstairs in her pyjamas so that Alex wouldn’t wake up and send her back to bed. She slipped on a pair of sandals at the door and moved as quickly as she could over to the stables. Their she found exactly who she had needed the most since she had found out she was pregnant, Blaze.

“Hey girl. You’re looking so beautiful this morning.” Blaze nudged Claire’s head when she heard the soft voice. Sure she was being looked after, but Claire was always so relaxed with her. No one spoke to her like Claire did. “You looked so lonely out here that I thought you would like some company.” Claire smiled and gave Blaze a small kiss. Then she noticed something sitting on a bale of hay. Someone had dumped her saddle there. It looked like it hadn’t been properly cleaned in years. I can’t believe it, Claire thought, they’ve just dumped it there like a piece of trash. That’s it, I’ve had enough of being cooped up inside. Today, I work! Claire picked up the saddle and took it into the house with her where she sat for the next hour clearing away all the cobwebs and dirt.

Meg was surprised to find Claire, with her head on the table, asleep. Her first thought was to wake her up and tell her to go to bed. But even when Claire wasn’t pregnant that wasn’t a good idea. So she left her there while she started to cook breakfast. Claire awoke just before Becky walked in the door. Becky smiled cheerfully and sat across the table from her. Claire just glared.

“So Becky, hope the work load hasn’t been to hard for you.” Claire said clenching her fists.

“It’s been fine Claire. Why?” The smile had disappeared from Becky’s face.

“Well, I hope you’ve been remembering to make sure Blaze is okay every morning.”

“I check on Blaze every morning.”

“And that’s why she hasn’t been taken out of the stable. She needs air Becky. And thanks to you neglecting my saddle I’ll have to get a new one.” Becky bit her bottom lip. She had asked Jodi to take care of that and now she wished she hadn’t. With Claire’s temper lately she new she’d be in for it. “I can’t have this going unnoticed Becky I want you to pack your bags and get out!” With that Claire stood and made her way up to her bedroom.

“This has to be the record Becky.” Meg said as she placed a plate of eggs and bacon in front of Becky. Becky laughed a little as she took a sip of her orange juice.

“Yep, this would have to be eight times she’s fired me in a week. When she found out about Peter being married it was only four.”

“It will be nice to have her back to normal.”

“Only three months to go.” Becky said, swallowing her bacon. “Not that I’m counting.”

Chapter 11: Fear

The road seemed to go on and on forever as Alex raced his Ute to the hospital; with everyone else forming a conga line behind them. Claire screamed out in pain as another contraction hit her.

“It’s alright Claire we will be at the hospital soon, and it will all be over.”

“It better be!” Claire screamed through clenched teeth and shot a nasty glare at Alex. Meg placed a folded hand-towel on Claire’s head and an ice pack on top. Alex freaked when he saw the look Claire was giving him and pressed his foot down on the excelerator. Claire watched as the speed of the car rose to over 100km/h.

“Slow down you stupid git, what are trying to do? Kill me?” Claire screamed at him.

Tess seemed to be in the same mood as Claire as Nick tried his best to keep up with his brother. Liz, Jodi and Harry sat in the back seat of Liz’s 4WD, while Becky sat relaxed in the boot. Occasionally she popped her head up between two of the people on the back seat and scared the living daylights of them. But most of the time she just sat watching the dust clouds they were leaving behind them. Nick wasn’t as relaxed, he found it very hard to drive with Tess, Liz and Harry yelling instructions at him.

“Keep up with your brother Nick!” Liz yelled, leaning forward in her seat.

“Are you mad Liz? Going at that speed we’ll all be killed!” Tess turned around in her seat and yelled back. Harry sat back for a minute before making himself heard.

“Let Nick do what he wants. It’s bed enough he has no idea where he’s going with out you lot screaming at him to speed up and slow down.” The two women just glared at him.

“Shit!” Jodi shouted as Becky once again popped her head up.

“Anyone want a juicy fruit? I found them in the esky.”

There was no noise. Even Tess’s footsteps didn’t cause an echo as she paced back and fourth. Her eyes flickered towards the door as she heard another ear piercing scream.

“She’ll be okay Tess.” Liz put her arms around Tess and whispered in her ear. “Plus you’re wearing out the tiles.” Tess innocently looked down at the black marks on the white tiles that had been made by her boots. She hugged Liz again.

“The doctor told us there might be some problems and…”

“Doctor’s aren’t always right Tess.” Liz cut in. “They said Nick was going to be a girl. Unfortunately he wasn’t.” Harry smiled at the thought of his son hearing that. Luckily he had gone to pick up Cory. Everyone turned towards the door as it opened. Alex walked out and let the door close behind him. Liz cupped his cheek with her hand.

“Alex?” He looked up at everyone in the room, just as Cory and Nick walked in.

“It’s a boy.” He half stuttered. The congratulations started. “And…” There was silence once more as Alex spoke. “A girl too.”

“Twins?” Tess was confused. How could they not have known Claire was having twins?

“I’m an aunt twice in one day.” Cory suddenly noted and everyone laughed. Tess was watching Alex, he didn’t seem happy. She pulled him aside while the celebrating continued.

“What’s wrong Alex?” Cory stood next to Tess eager to hear what was happening. “How’s Claire? What did the doctor say?” Alex looked at their family all busily talking about the twins, then at the door where his beloved Claire was and then back at Tess.

“They said she was loosing too much blood. The wall of her uterus had been torn. There was so much blood. They told me to leave and Claire was screaming. She was screaming out my name, she didn’t want me to leave. But I had to.” Tears started to roll down Alex’s cheeks. This caught the attention of Liz and Harry. They walked over to Alex followed by everyone else.

“Claire’s uterus has been torn and there’s too much blood.” Tess repeated to them.

“They said she might not make it.” Alex said softly through his tears. There was a short gasp. Claire could die. They hadn’t expected that. They all knew that Claire’s body had tried rejecting the babies while they were in the womb but death! She can’t die. She’s strong, she always has been. Cory thought, then almost as if she’d heard her thoughts Becky hugged her and said,

“She won’t die Cory, she’ll be okay.” Cory nodded.

The night was long. The nurses had allowed Tess, Alex and Nick to stay at the hospital and wait for news on Claire. Cory had pleaded to stay but she was out numbered, everyone believed it would be better if she went to the hotel. Tess had fallen asleep, curled up on Nick’s shoulder. Alex was tired but wouldn’t sit down and let himself give-in to temptation.

“Sit down Alex.” Nick said softly, trying not to wake up Tess.

“I can’t Nick. I want to be awake in case something happens.” Nick shook his head.

“You mean that you want to be awake when Clare pulls through this.” Alex sipped his coffee then looked at Nick.

“What if she doesn’t Nick? I don’t think I could bare to loose her. What will I do? I can’t look after the twins by myself. I wouldn’t know what to do with one kid let alone two.” At that moment Tess started to wriggle around in Nick’s arms. A look of panic stretched across Nick’s face. He remembered what Claire had told him. But what f she started to call out for Claire? It’s not like he could impersonate her voice or anything. Luckily for Nick, Tess suddenly awoke and sat up.

“Claire.” She said and looked towards the door of the operating room. Just as she spoke Dr Taylor walked out of the door. He looked at Tess and Alex.

“She’s going to be alright. We’re going to wheel her down to her room, and you can come if you want to. But she probably won’t wake up till the morning.”

“Okay thanks Dylan.” Ale said patting him on the back. “What about the twins?”

“Well we’ll have them brought down to her room if you want. Then you can keep a close eye on the three of them.” Alex smiled and nodded.

“Yeah, that would be great Dylan.” Dr Taylor walked off, leaving the three in a state of shock. Claire had pulled through. She was still as tough as ever.

Chapter 12: Depression

Drovers Run hadn’t been the same since the twins had arrived. Tess had moved in with Nick a week before they were born so they could turn her room into a nursery. Cory was glad she was down the other end of the hall, because eof all the screaming at night. Alex and Meg where exhausted from taking it in turns to look after the twins if they cried at night, and Claire had changed. Since she had been in the hospital she had become distant. It had been at least four months and the twins still didn’t have names due to Alex wanting Claire to be the first person to speak their names. But she didn’t even go near them. She stayed in her room and did nothing. She hadn’t since her return, but she occasionally got herself a glass of water from the jug that Meg re-filled each morning. She sat near the window and watched birds fly through the clouds. Even when it rained and she couldn’t see a thing; she stared out the window.

Alex walked into the room to find her singing to herself as she looked out at the rain hitting the windowsill. She gently rocked back and fourth singing softly. Alex sat on the bed and watched her. He had never heard her sing before. Her voice was beautiful, Soft and sweet. She was singing whatever came into her head at the time, but it was still a beautiful song. She stopped and turned around to face him. The silence was deafening as Claire just stared at Alex.

“I came to see if you were awake.” Alex smiled at her, but he knew when she abruptly turned back to the window that he was not welcome in their bedroom. “The twins are doing well, they are very healthy.” He had said the wrong thing. He had been doing that for the past few days. Whenever he accidentally mentioned the twins it would happen, and today was no exception. Claire’s shoulder slumped forward and she started to cry. The tears flooded her eyes and rolled down her cheeks. Alex stood and walked to the door. He at least knew not to try and comfort her. Last time he had tried to calm her down she stopped for a moment to scream and throw a glass at him. She rolled up into a ball and cried on the arm of the lounge chair that had been put there for her. Everything was moving forward so fast that she couldn’t take it.

I just want it to slow down, Claire thought, Why does everything happen so quickly. I wish I could go back and not have the twins so early in my life with Alex. I wish I could have had more time with him. Her thoughts were shattered by the sound of the twins crying in the room next-door. Alex or Meg will get them. The minutes were ticking by. Claire looked out the window and started to bite her nails. Where is everyone? Why aren’t they going to calm down the children? What do I do? She noticed everyone in the stable fixing up the gates that had blown off in the storm. They can’t hear the children screaming. Claire suddenly realised. She stood up and ran for the door and into the nursery. She sat on a stool between the two cribs and tried her best to stop them from crying. What do I do?

“I want my mum.” Claire was startled by what she had said, growing up without her mother she had never really needed her. She looked at the twins crying. Maybe they are trying to scream out the same thing. Maybe they just want me. She stood and picked up one of the twins.

“Is that all you want? Do you want your mummy?” The soft words she spoke seemed to silence the screams. She held the baby in one arm and pulled the crib closer to the stool so when she placed the baby back down she could place one hand on the stomach of both babies. With her back to the door she didn’t notice that Meg had run up the stairs to check on the twins when she heard them crying. She just sat and rubbed their stomachs just like she did when Roy was just a puppy.

“Shh, don’t cry Jack. If you keep crying Emily will start up again.” Meg smiled at these words and walked back down stairs.

Everyone sat in the kitchen, soaked to the bone after being outside in the pouring rain. Meg seemed to be the only one smiling as she entered the small room.

“What are you so happy about?” Jodi asked as her mother took some warm scones out of the oven.

“I’ve hut been up stairs, because I heard the twins crying when I came in.”

“Are they okay?” Alex asked, jumping to his feet.

“They’re fine, Jack and Emily are just fine.” Alex sat back down relieved until what Meg said fully registered in his mind.

“What do you mean ‘Jack and Emily’. We haven’t even named them yet.” Meg smiled and bit into a warm, jam covered scone.

“We haven’t, but Claire has.” Alex and Cory jumped up from the table and ran up stairs. Sure enough Claire was in the nursery with the twins. They stood in the open doorway and listened to Claire sing them to sleep. Finally the twins were fast asleep. Claire stood and kissed both of them on the cheek.

“Goodnight Jack, goodnight Emily. Mummy will be just in the next room.” Alex smiled as he heard those words. Claire turned to see Cory and Alex smiling at her. She walked towards them, closing the door behind her.

“Good one Alex!” She half-yelled and half-whispered. Alex was confused, what had he done?

“What?”

“You leave our children alone. They were screaming for ages!” She spat back at him. “I can’t believe you could be such an asshole!” She glared and stomped off into her bedroom with Cory on her heels. Alex just stood at the top of the stairs totally bewildered by what had happened.

Claire curled back up in the corner of her lounge and went back to watching the rain outside. Cory sat down at the other end of the three seater. After a moment of silence both looked at each other.

“I like the names you gave them.” Cory smiled. “What made you think of them?”

“Obviously Jack was dad’s name, and Emily was mum’s name.” Claire turned back to the window. She still hadn’t got over the fact she had cried out for her mother.

“That’s very sweet.” Cory said as she placed a hand on Claire’s tense shoulder. “What’s wrong Claire?” Claire turned back to Cory and half smiled as the tears started to form in her eyes.

“You grew up with your mum and Tess grew up with her mum. I never knew my mum. I’ve never thought about it before. But when the twins were crying, the first thing I said was ‘I want my mum’ I don’t know why, but I did.” A small tear ran down Claire’s cheek.

“It’s okay Claire. Every girl needs her mother at some point in time.” Cory smiled at her older sister. When Miranda was beating her Claire always seemed more like a mother, but now she seemed like a child crying for their own mother. “Everything will be fine Claire. I promise.”

“I hope so Cory. I really do.” Cory suddenly jumped up of the lounge, ruining the sad moment.

“I know just what you need Claire.”

“Yeah and what’s that?” Claire laughed.

“Liz and Harry are having a barbecue tomorrow so all their friends and family can officially meet their grandchildren. Why don’t you come.”

“I don’t know.” Claire swayed on the words working out what she should do.

“Claire! You need to get outside and spend time socialising and getting to know Jack and Emily better. C’mon Claire. Please.”

“Formal or casual?” Claire sighed. Cory clapped her hands.

“Definitely casual. You know jeans T-shirt, blah, blah, blah.” They both laughed.

Prologue: Eight years later

Claire and Alex McLeod-Ryan:

Life had turned out great for the perfect match. Alex was happy teaching hi two sons, Jack (8) and Dylan (6) how to fly a helicopter without actually taking it off the ground. While Claire spent plenty of time with the three girls, Emily (8) Shae (5) and Lucy (3) she had taught all their children to ride a horse which she was very pleased about. Claire and Alex were living in luxury. They had everything they wanted including another child on the way.

Tess and Nick Ryan:

Four years of marriage has caused the two to fall deeper and deeper for each other. Unlike Claire and Alex the pair have decided to wait a little before starting a family. But the next year could bring something interesting.

Liz and Harry Ryan:

Of course to keep up with tradition this two continue to bicker about thins that aren’t really that important. But they always put it aside when their grandchildren visit them. Harry constantly complains that they don’t see enough of them, while Liz argues that five hours every two days is okay.

Cory Shae McLeod-Harrison:

At twenty-four years of age, Cory has been married for two years to a young Australian actor. She moved to Sydney with him and has a daughter named Claire. Every now and then she travels back to Drovers for a special occasion to catch up with her family. She’s always happy to see that her silver horse Dallas is still there.

Becky, Meg and Jodi:

Becky is still dating Brick but has been having some weird dreams of wedding bells. Meg is happy with Terry. And Jodi still bounces all over the place.

A huge bonfire lighted the sky as everyone danced and laughed up in the back paddock. Claire watched as her children played with the toys they got for Christmas. She moved into the light and glanced at her watch.

“Oops.” She said silently then placed her fingers in her mouth and whistled. Everyone was silent. Tess was seated on Nick’s lap, Harry was talking with Alex and Cory’s husband and Cory was holding baby Claire and chatting to Liz. They all turned to Claire as she shouted, “HAPPY NEW YEAR!” Alex walked over to her.

“May I have the first kiss?” Claire sighed.

“I’m sorry sweetie, I’ve already promised it to someone else.” Alex was shocked and demanded to know who. Claire walked over to the person and kissed him on the cheek.

“Happy New Year.” Claire said.

“Happy New Year Mum.” Dylan answered. Alex couldn’t help himself; he wrapped his arms around Claire’s waist, laughed and kissed her.

Yep, Claire and Cory both thought, we’re going to be okay.
