Claire and Tess were working up in one of the back fields fixing the fence when Tess noticed a wild brumby running in one of the paddocks in Wilgul.
“Claire did you see that wild Brumby?”
“No”
“Well I better go and warn Nick about the Brumby. I’ll be back soon.”
“Righto”.
So Tess rode over to Wilgul to greet Nick who was loading the Ute up to go do something.
“Hey Nick”
“Hey Tess wats up”
“Well I just thought that I would let you know about a wild brumby that is roaming around one of your Paddocks”
“Thanks I better get Alex to round up that brumby for me”
“Ok well then I’ll leave it to you then. Bye”
“Bye Tess”. With that Tess got back onto her horse and rode back to Claire. When she got back she found Claire resting under the shade of one of the Trees.
“Did you tell Nick about the brumby?”
“Yea Nick’s gonna get Alex to round it up.”
“Well then back to work”.
After the women had finished repairing the fence they went back to the house to commence the other tasks that needed to be done around the place. When they got back to the house Claire noticed a whole bunch of letters on the table. “Bills, bills and more bills. Great!” And with that Meg walked into the kitchen. “Hello Claire um I’ve just finished fixing the windmill and Beck and Jodi have just finished rounding up the sheep and they are ready to be drenched”
“Thanks Meg”
Two minutes later Tess walks into the kitchen.
“Hey Meg have you seen Claire?”
“Um I think she is in the study”
“Ok thanks Meg”. Tess went into the study only to find Claire sitting at the desk with a mountain high pile of sheets.
“Claire?”
“Yea”
“I was wondering if you would like to a BBQ tonight for dinner I asked Meg yet but if you want I can invite the boys around. Does that sound okay?”
“Well the only problem I have with that is that I have to get all this paper work done because it won’t get done by itself!”
“Well if you want I can put in a super doper effort tomorrow and do all the paper work”
“Well check and see if it is alright with Meg then we’ve got a deal”.
“Meg um I was just wondering if tonight we could have a BBQ instead?”
“That’s a good idea Tess”
“cool”. Tess goes over to the phone to call the boys. . . “Hello Nick its Tess um do you and Alex have any plans for this afternoon? . . . No. . . . Well do you guys want to come over for a BBQ dinner? . . Yes cool well it is a 5.00pm and don’t worry you don’t have to bring anything. Ok see you then Bye . . .”
Later that afternoon…
Claire and Tess were sitting on the veranda having a beer waiting for the guys to show up.
“What the hell is keeping those two”
“Tess, guys are always late”
“Tell me about it”
“Well I am going to start the barbie and if those two don’t show up by the time it is all cooked then its their tough luck!”. Claire and Tess get up and go into the kitchen to get the steaks and sausage for the BBQ, when they came out of the kitchen Alex and Nick had arrived.
“Hi sorry we’re late”
“It’s about bloody time you guys got here”
“Geez sorry Claire. Here we bought some beers”
“Thanks Nick” Tess took the beer from Nick and put them in the fridge in the kitchen.
The rest of the afternoon went along well and at about 10pm Nick and Alex decided to go home as tomorrow they had an early start.
“Well it’s getting late we better get going hey Nick”
“yea”
“well we will see you gals tomorrow probably”
“Okay see you tomorrow drive safely” When the two males were in the car they sped off down the driveway into the darkness”
“Geez those two are idiots well I might go to bed night Tess”
“Night Claire”
The next day the women of Drovers were packing the Ute getting ready to go into Gungallen to pick up supplies.
“Okay we all set?”
“Now Jodi and Beck you two can stay here and do some chores and we will be back soon okay”
“Okay see you mum” Claire, Tess and Meg got into the Ute and started their journey to Gungallen. “Tess, how are you coming along with that paper work?”
“Yea um I have almost finished it” “Good thanks for that”.
The car was silent as they drove down the main road to Gungallen then next minute there was another car speeding along the road heading towards the ladies. The part of road that they were driving along was narrow. Claire who was driving tried her best to swerve out of the way but it was too late. The two cars collided with great impact. Tess who was sitting in the back was a bit sore but she was alright. She jumped out of the Ute and went to check on Claire and Meg who were sitting in the front. They were still breathing but unconscious. Tess tried her best to wake them up but they wouldn’t wake up. By this stage Tess was panicking. When she went to check on the other driver it was a man but Tess couldn’t figure out the face. She lifted the drivers head up slowly and carefully only to find out that it was Alex. His face was covered in blood.
The strange thing was that Alex was driving a different car. Tess frantically looked around to see if Alex had his mobile. Luckily he did. So Tess called Nick and told him about the accident by that time she was in tears. Then she called the Ambulance.
20 minutes later Nick arrived. “Are you alright Tess”
“Yea I’m a bit sore but it’s the others that I’m worried about. How come Alex was driving a different car? Just after she said that out of the passenger side of the car a person got out. “Tess I’d like to introduce to mine and Alex’s Cousin Phil” “Hi I’m Tess.” “So Tess did you call the Ambo’s”
“Yea they should be here soon.”
All of the sudden Tess started to shake from what had just happened. Nick went over to Tess and directed her over to a tree and sat down and waited.
About 10 minutes later the ambulance pulled up and rushed over to the accident site with the stretchers and they took them to the hospital. After they had been taken away Tess rang Drovers to inform Becky about the accident and then Tess rang the towing company to tow away the cars. Then Nick drove Tess and Phil to the hospital.
Once the three of them had reached the hospital they went to the counter to ask about them.
“Excuse me can you please tell me where Claire McLeod, Alex Ryan and Meg Fountain are”
“Sorry madam but you can’t see them right now they are in a intensive care unit”
“Do you when we can go see them”
“Soon I’ll just check with the doctor”. Nick, Tess and Phil went over to the waiting room and sat down; they knew that it would be a long wait.
“Tess, Phil do you guys want a drink or something to eat?”
“No thanks Nick”.
About 20 minutes later the doctor came out.
“Are you here for Claire, Meg and Alex?” “Yes how are they?” “Well, Alex is in a critical stage but Claire and Meg are fine they are in shock”
“When can we see them?”
“Well at the moment they are asleep but when they wake up you can go in and see them.” The doctor then walked away.
“Tess why don’t you go can get checked out by the doctor”
“No I’m fine”.
As soon as Claire and Meg woke up Tess went immediately to see Claire.
“Are you aright Claire?”
“Yea who was that idiot who was screaming down the road?”
“Um it was Alex”
“Alex”
“Yeah he was driving his cousins car”
“how is he?” Tess started crying “He is in a critical stage” Claire started to cry. “Is he going to be alright?”
“I don’t really know”. After chatting a few minutes with Claire Tess, went to check up on Meg. After she had finished talking with Meg Tess called Drovers and asked Becky to bring Jodi to the hospital to see her mum.
2 hours later Becky arrived with Jodi and then she went to see Meg.
The next day came and Tess had camped out in the hospital along with Jodi. The rest of them went home. The doctor came out to where Tess and Jodi were sitting.
“Excuse me ladies um are you waiting for an update on Alex Ryan?”
“Yes is he getting better?”
“Well at this stage we aren’t really sure”
“How are Claire and Meg”
“Their fine they probably should be out in a couple of days. But for now you ladies should get home and get some proper rest and if anything happens I will call you straight away”
“Thanks.” Nick gave Becky a lift home last night so there was a car for Tess and Jodi to drive home in.
The drive home was quiet.
When Tess and Jodi arrived home they both went straight to bed because they were really tired from having stayed up all night worrying about Claire, Alex and Meg.
It was about 2:00pm when Tess woke up and just as she walked downstairs to the kitchen the phone rang.
“Hello Tess speaking”
“Hi Tess I have some news about Alex”
“It isn’t bad is it”
“Um well his condition has worsened and there is a very bad chance of him recovering.”
“Does his family know about him”
“No”
By this time Tess was in tears “You will be able to pick Meg and Claire up Tomorrow” “ok thanks Bye” When Tess put down the phone she sank to the floor in tears.
Nick pulled up to Drovers to go and check on Tess. He walked in the house and found Tess curled up on the floor sobbing.
“Tess” When Tess heard she jumped then she looked up and rose to her feet and gave Nick a hug.
“I’m so sorry”
“what’s the matter Tess”
“I not long received a phone call from the hospital saying that Alex’s’ condition has worsened and there is not a very good chance of him surviving”.
As soon as Nick heard this he started crying too. The two of them stood in the middle of the hallway in tears and hugging one another.
Nick stayed the night because he was to upset to drive home. In the morning at about 10:00am Nick and Tess drove into Gungallen to pick Claire and Meg up from the hospital. While in the hospital Tess and Nick went to check up on Alex. They went into his room and they saw a body hooked up to all of these machines. Alex looked horrible. Nick went to talk to the doctor.
“Hi so how is Alex doing?”
“Well he is in a really bad way and there is not a very good chance of him recovering. If his condition doesn’t improve soon we will have to take him off life support.”
“Okay thanks doc”
“No worries”.
.
Once Nick and Tess had collected Claire and Meg they drove back to Drovers. Nick got into his car and went to Kilarney to break the news to his parents.
Once Nick arrived at Kilarney he was greeted by his parents.
“Hi mum, dad”
“Nick”
“Can I speak to you two for a minute it is rather urgent.”
“Sure Nick what is it”
“It’s about Alex. The other day he was involved in a car accident. He was speeding along the road to Gungallen and Claire, Meg and Tess was driving the opposite way and they collided head on”
“How’s everyone”
“Well Claire, Meg and Tess are fine but Alex is in intensive care and last night his condition worsened and there is a not very good chance of him surviving.”
After Nick had finished Liz and Harry rushed out of the room to the car and sped off to the hospital. When they got there they went into Alex’s room. Liz broke down and Harry had a tear in his eye to. They hated seeing the sight that Alex was in. After spending a few hours in the hospital they went home. Phil was staying at Kilarney. The Next day Claire decided to go and see Alex in hospital. Tess accompanied her for emotional support. When Claire entered Alex’s room she asked Tess to wait outside because she wanted to be alone. Claire went over to where Alex’s body lay and started talking to him.
“Alex I’m sorry for what happened. Please don’t leave me. I love you.” After that Claire burst into tears. She got up and left the room and went home.
Mean While at Kilarney…
Liz and Harry spent all day thinking about Alex, they couldn’t stop, after seeing him in the condition he was in.
“Liz I think that we should put Alex out of his misery and take off the life support.”
“No Harry I couldn’t bear loosing a son his so young”
“Well I don’t think that his condition is going to get any better so I am going to the hospital and tell them to turn the life support off” After that Liz started crying. Later that afternoon Harry and Liz went to the hospital to watch their son die.
So at 7:00 that night the staff turned of the life support.
