SYNOPSIS OF UFP CLEARED, ARCHIVED INFORMATION
REPORT THREE
REPORT BY: ADMIRAL ADRIENNE PARADIS
PLANET: Magoi
SYSTEM: Mirabilius
While most of Magoi is hospitable, there are areas of such extreme environmental conditions as to make investigation nearly impossible.
While the polar regions have become famous for their fatal winter conditions, there are areas around the equator of such extreme tropical climates as to make habitation impossible and exploration nearly so. Yet there is plant and animal life in both regions perfectly suited to their environments. Further research of these adaptations may help us to improve our own equipment for such extreme environmental factors.

RESEARCH UPDATES
QUICKPOOLS
Quickpools: pools of viscous liquid, heavier than the basic element H2O, known as water and containing elements known and unknown to the Empire as well as unclassifiable bacteria.
Sonar has shown that these pools are rarely more than five feet deep, but all have a "drain hole" at the bottom through which the liquid is occasionally sucked down. While this hole is rarely more than approximately 5 centimeters wide, the suction may be strong enough to keep a man in place until help arrives.
These pools seem to draw this liquid right from the soil itself at a fast enough rate to keep the pools filled. We suspect the bacteria present in the pools has something to do with this process. The purpose behind this activity is yet to be determined.
For reasons we have not yet determined, the Quickpools appear and disappear at different locations. It takes about three days for a pools to form. It may remain for about a week at the least and then simply dry out. In its place is very fertile soil, perfect for local plant life. If we could determine the how's and why's of these pools, they could make a marvelous farming tool.
Note: We have found only one pool to be of any real danger in that the drain hole is wide enough for a person to be sucked into it, however the suction force itself is not very strong. If a person can suspend oneself in water or even swim, they should be able to extricate themselves.
Plans are underway to send probes into this Quickpool to determine its place in the ecosystem.
CIRLITUS
Cirlitus: Dark green moss that can be found everywhere on Magoi except in the extreme polar regions. Thick, yet stringy, it can appear and disappear so quickly from an area and to seem to be mobile, yet has never been observed actually moving.
It appears to serve as a kind of caretaker for the planet, regulating waters, creating canopies when the native plant or animal life require it as well as clearing areas too dense with growth.
It has been suggested that Cirlitus may have some connection with the occurrence of Quickpools.
If we can learn enough about Cirlitus, it might be harnessed for use in our community farms, thus cutting back on manpower needed to run these farms and providing more available personnel for military duties.
Note: It has been suspected by myself and mentioned by my colleges that if there is intelligence on Magoi, perhaps it is the Cirlitus. It has been suggested that no one is controlling the moss, that the moss "thinks" for itself.
That Cirlitus is a sentient life form is the only theory which would sufficiently explain the unusual activity and phenomenon that we have observed on Magoi. We believe this is a theory that bears further investigation. If this indeed be the case, we may never actually be able to "control" Cirlitus, but may have to consider opening negotiations with it. If for no other reason than to prevent more loss of life.
Indeed, if Cirlitus is sentient, we may be fortunate that it has tolerated our harvesting of the Trepidare Apud Cocoons at all and I suggest that the harvesters continue to observe the strictest of protocols when visiting Magoi.
CAUTIONARY NOTES
It is suspected that some lives have been lost to the Quickpools. How this happened remains a mystery at the moment. While only one Quickpool has been determined to be of any possible threat, the missing personnel were no where around that particular pool. There has been some evidence found around other pools that suggest these people may have died in them, even though upon investigation the drain hole appears to be too small for this to happen.
The only theory I can offer is that the hole momentarily enlarged itself to allow a person to be sucked into it and then shrank back to its original size. That still does not explain how the people came to be in the pools, or how so many might "fall" into the pools. Most of those lost were military and they are not usually clumsy.
Investigations are under way to somehow close off, fill in, drain or at least erect warning beacons around the pools at a rate consistent with their appearance and disappearance.
