The information on this page was gathered from about ten years of research. I owe a great debt of gratitude to many people for their invaluable assistance in this endeavor. A few of these notable individuals are: Vance Harvey Johnson (deceased), Mendall McLeod Mozingo (deceased), Bobby Allen Parnell, Horace Frasier Rudisill, John Lennell Andrews Jr., Jill King Lyles, Francis Marion "Buster" Beasley, Helen Dalrymple Shirley, Gayle W. Licari, and Samie Melton.

This page will be updated as information becomes available and time permits.

To my knowledge, most, if not all, Mozingo descendants who are native to North American can trace their ancestry back to early Virginia. Beyond that I honestly know of no documented origin of the name itself.

Mozingo clans have lived on this continent for over three hundred years. Today, Mozingos, Monzingos, and Montzingos (plus other spelling variations) reside in probably every corner of the continental U.S.

As was the case with many early South Carolina families which settled in the Pee Dee region, Mozingos migrated down from Virginia into North Carolina during the early 1700s. Later generations then moved further south during the late 1700s and early 1800s and settled in upper South Carolina. Several families stayed only a few years in the Palmetto State before heading west into Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. Of course Mozingo families also remained in Virginia and North Carolina respectively and many of their descendants are still there today. However, if we look at he whole picture, all these southern clans are but several branches of the Mozingo family tree. As well, several Mozingo clans headed directly west from Virgina while still others headed north. This page will focus mainly on the South Carolina clan.

Possibly the first Mozingo family to come to South Carolina was that of Lewis Mozingo. [NOTE: The first Mozingo to arrive in South Carolina may have been Sarah Mozingo, daughter of John and Ann Mozingo, who married Henry Allen in Marion County, SC before 1781. This info provided by Gayle Licari]. Lewis probably arrived sometime in the 1790s as noted by his presence in the 1800 Darlington District census (there are no Mozingos found in the 1790 Heads of Families for SC).  During his stay in Darlington District Lewis owned a plantation that—according to an August 25, 1806 land deed—was situated "in the fork of Jumping Gulley."  In this deed Lewis was selling his plantation to George Mozingo (possibly a brother) for "Fifty pounds sterling."  After selling his land Lewis started a westward trek and appears next in the 1810 Sumter County census as "Lewis Mozinga."  From there he moved into Georgia where he is found in the 1830 Houston County census.  I have no other records on Lewis and assumed he remained in Georgia.

However, Lewis’ children settled in Louisiana during the 1850s where an "n" was added to their name thus starting one of several "Monzingo" clans.  This must have been about the time Kinchen Mozingo (mentioned later) arrived in Louisiana as his family also added the "n" to their name.

After Lewis, William Mozingo and George Mozingo (also possibly brothers) arrived in South Carolina probably between 1800 and 1810 as they are both listed in the 1810 Darlington District census for the first time.

George Mozingo was born about 1788 (possibly in North Carolina) and is believed to have married Mary Skinner, the daughter of early Stokes Bridge area settler Benjamin Skinner.  As mentioned earlier George bought Lewis’ plantation in 1806. He then bought land from William Mozingo in 1810.  He also bought land from others then sold all his land to William Brockington (this according to a deed dated January 23, 1827).  George is thought to have then moved to Dallas County, Alabama.  There is a George Mozingo in the Dallas County census of 1840.  George is possibly the originator of one of several Alabama Mozingo clans.

Jonathan Mozingo moved into Darlington District, South Carolina sometime between 1810 and 1820.  Upon a recent discovery by Samie Melton (thanks, Samie) of a copy of the original hand-written will of William Mozingo, it has been determined that Jonathan was indeed a son of William Mozingo.  Jonathan is listed in the 1820 Darlington District census living near William Mozingo and George Mozingo.  In Jonathan’s household there is only him and one female listed: both of their approximate ages are listed as being between 16 and 26.  The female is no doubt his wife.  Jonathan also moved to Dallas County, Alabama, and is listed in the 1840 census with a wife and three daughters.  He disappears after that and no other record of him is known to exist.

Kinchen Mozingo came to South Carolina sometime in the 1820s.  It is believed he was married to Mary Ann Kea.  Kinchen bought land in Darlington District and lived there until the 1850s, during which time he sold his land to Barthemew Fields in a deed from November of 1853. Kinchen then moved to Louisiana where he and three of Lewis’ sons are all listed in the census as "Monzingo."  They are apparently responsible for at least one of today’s "Monzingo" lines.

There is, by the way, also a Monzingo line which began with "Thomas Monzingo," a son of Revolutionary War veteran George Mozingo.  However, this family is thought to connect with the Charles Mozingo clan out of Culpeper County, Virginia.

William Mozingo, a son of Pierce Mozingo, was born in North Carolina about 1775.  Of the previous Mozingos who moved to South Carolina, William is possibly the only one who stayed.  He settled in Darlington District and remained there until his death in 1851 or 52.  He married Laney Cotton and together they had at least eight children: Jonathan, William, Mary Ann, Kinchen, McKenzie, Lucy, Mahalia, and Elizabeth.  It is believed that William’s son, William, was one of those who moved to Alabama possibly with George.  We know that Kinchen moved to Louisiana.  Mary Ann is thought to have married a Beasley and may have remained in South Carolina.  As mentioned previously, William Sr. is the forbearer of the South Carolina Mozingo clan, and it is his descendants through his son McKenzie that is the focus of the genealogy listed on this page.

Hebron Methodist Church

Any history of the South Carolina Mozingo family would not be complete without some mention of Hebron Church.  If there is any single location that can be argued as the base of origin for this family it is this old Methodist Society.  Located near Lynches River in what was part of old Darlington District (now Lee County) and originally known as "Skinner’s Meeting House," it was here that the early Mozingos enriched their lives with Southern Methodism. It is also here where many Mozingo descendants still worship today.

As best I can gather Skinner’s Meeting House was founded sometime in the early 1820s.  The earliest known record for this meeting house is from 1824 when "Skinner's" was mentioned in the minutes of "Lynches Creek Circuit," this according to: History of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Lydia, South Carolina, 1789-1989 by John Lennell Andrews, Jr..  This would mean that Skinner’s Meeting House could very likely have been formed in 1823 or perhaps earlier.

[The above sketch was done in 1998 by James Henry Puckhaber, a great-great-great-grandson of McKenzie Mozingo and Annie Skinner Mozingo. The sketch was made based on early photographs of Hebron Church plus the rare and priceless memories of those few who remember the structure as it stood in the early 1900s. One such eyewitness is Francis Marion "Buster" Beasley, a great-grandson of McKenzie Mozingo and grandfather to James Henry Puckhaber. I am especially indebted to you, "Mr. Buster."]

The Skinner family is one of the oldest in the Stokes Bridge area.  The Skinners pre-date the Mozingos in South Carolina and were involved in the ministry here as early as 1806 when Edward Skinner, son of Benjamin Skinner, was licensed to preach on September 26, 1806. Edward’s son, Asa, also became a Methodist preacher and served as such in Darlington District before moving to Butler County, Alabama where he continued his ministry.

In 1838, Edward’s brother, Lemuel Skinner, donated one acre of land to "the Methodist Church."  It is believed by some, including myself, that this acre is where the Hebron sanctuary stands today.

NOTE:  I am not the first to publish genealogy on the Mozingos of South Carolina.  The first such publication I know of was done by Jennie Mozingo Dalrymple and was entitled "Descendants of McKenzie Mozingo and Annie Skinner."  The second is a compiled genealogy that was recently published by Frank Miller Richey and entitled "Mozingo Trails."

How to follow this genealogy

This genealogy begins with McKenzie Mozingo as individual number 1.  Descendants of McKenzie Mozingo are assigned their own numbers in progressive order.  Each descendant is assigned only one number.  (Spouses of descendants are not assigned numbers.)  The small roman numerals indicate child order within a family.  A plus (+) by a child's number indicates that the child is listed again further down as a parent.  To locate a person as a parent, simply locate their individual number again (this time in bold type) by following the sequence of numbers.  Still, each descendant has only one number.

This counting method works forward or backward for both parents and children and is the easiest system to follow I have ever seen.  This system is generally referred to as the "Register Report" system.  The report was generated with Brother's Keeper genealogy software.

NOTE:  All locations mentioned in this genealogy are in South Carolina unless listed otherwise.

The Family of

McKenzie Mozingo and Annie Skinner

(Three Generations)

First Generation

1. McKenzie Mozingo: born 10 Oct 1812 in Darlington District (son of William Mozingo and Laney Cotton).  Married first to Anna "Annie" Skinner, born 5 Feb 1814, (daughter of Edward Skinner and Nancy) died 22 Jul 1877 in Stokes Bridge.  McKenzie married second on 27 Dec 1877 to Mary Elizabeth Tallevast: born 11 Dec 1832, South Carolina, (daughter of Adolphus Pierre Tallevast and Nancy Howell) died 23 Aug 1908.  McKenzie died 12 Oct 1899 in Stokes Bridge.  McKenzie, Annie, and Mary Elizabeth are all buried at Hebron United Methodist Church in Lee County, South Carolina.

Children by Anna "Annie" Skinner:

+ 2. i Nelson Edward Mozingo: born about 1831.  [My great-great grandfather.]

+ 3. ii Sara Ann Mozingo: born 23 Jul 1834.

+ 4. iii Alexander McKenzie Mozingo: born 29 Sep 1837.

+ 5. iv Mary E. Mozingo: born 7 Mar 1840.

+ 6. v William Henry Mozingo: born 2 Aug 1842.

+ 7. vi Martha L. Mozingo: born 1845.

+ 8. vii James Pressley Mozingo: born 23 Sep 1845.

+ 9. viii Hannah C. Mozingo: born 9 Nov 1849.

+ 10. ix Joseph Finley "Jode" Mozingo: born 1851.

11. x Argent Mozingo: born about 13 Feb 1854, Darlington District. Married Josiah B. Stokes: born about 1851. Argent died about 2 May 1880, buried at Hebron United Methodist Church, Lee County, SC.  [Even though there is no documention, Argent may have died in childbirth along with the child.]

Second Generation

2. Nelson Edward Mozingo: born about 1831, Darlington District.  Married *Julia J. McKenzie: (daughter of James McKenzie and Epsey Fields). Nelson Edward died 20 Mar 1863 at Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond, Virginia; he is buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia; he served in Co. M, 8th SC Infantry, CSA.  [These are my great-great grandparents.]

[*It is not known for sure where Julia J. McKenzie is buried.  One possibilty is that she is the "Mrs. J.J. Mozingo" buried at Hebron: Jan 10, 1831-Mar 25, 1901.  This particular stone was erected by two of Julia's nephews, "H.H. & W.M. McKenzie," (this is engraved on the stone itself).   Furthermore "Mrs. J.J. Mozingo" is buried next to a bordered section of McKenzies that are all Julia's family, including the two nephews who erected the stone.  However, the 1900 Stokes Bridge census lists "Julia J. McKenzie" as being born in "May/1824" and her age as "76" (which does not match the birthdate of the stone) and that she is living with two nephews: "Homer H. McKenzie" and "W. Maxie McKenzie."   However, the census does lists her as a "widow" which would be correct.]

Children:

12. i Edward Mozingo: born about 1852.

13. ii Unknown Mozingo: born about 1854.

[The 1860 Darlington District census lists a five-year-old female child in the household of N.E. and Julia J. Mozingo.  There is no name listed for this child, just what appears to be the initial "H" followed by at least one other initial which I could not identify.]

14. iii Epsey A. Mozingo: born about 1856, Darlington District.  No issue; probably died young.

15. iv James McKenzie "Mack" Mozingo: born about 1857, Darlington District. Married Susannah Prudence Hicks. James died 4 Aug 1881, buried at Hebron United Methodist Church, Lee County, SC.

Mrs J.P. Mozingo, Sr. (Lenora E. Tallevast)

"Stokes Bridge. On Monday morning of last week about 9 o'clock, Mrs. Leonora, wife of Mr. J.P. Mozingo, Sr., living near Stokes Bridge, met with a terrible death. She was standing with her back to the fire in one of the rooms. Her dress caught fire and blazed up as high as her head before she found it out. She ran out in the passage, when her husband caught her and attempted to pull off her burning clothes. All the water in the buckets was frozen and before it could be gotten from the well, Mrs. Mozingo was so badly burned that death resulted that night about 10 o'clock. Dr. H.D. Green was promply in attendance but could do nothing but alleviate her sufferings. She leaves seven children. She was buried at Hebron on Wednesday, Rev. E.T. Hodges officiating."
