The Viking wrestlers finished 6th at the SM North Tournament Sat. Gentry, Glisson and Wingers all placed 3rd, while Thatcher placed 4th.

The Vikings split their duals Wed. Emporia finished off West 48-21 and West defeated SM South 36-30. This runs the West dual record to 4-8.

West finished 22nd at the BV Northwest Tournament last weekend. Gentry brought home a 6th place medal in this always tough tournament.

The Vikings have dropped 3 out of their last 4 duals. Losses included 52-30 to Mulvane, a 43-30 loss to Wichita East and a 33-30 set back to Olathe South on senior night. The Vikings won their matchup with Wichita North 46-31. The Vikings look to improve as they travel to the BV Northwest tournament this weekend.

SM West has been busy the past month. Here are all the updates. Sorry for the technical difficulties.

West finished 10th at the SMNW tourn and 15th at the Johnson County Classic in December.
The Vikings went 1-4 in duals this past weekend at Fort Scott. They beat Pittsburg High, but lost matches against Louisburg, Mill Valley, Cherryvale and Fort Scott. Gentry and Earl are a perfect 6-0 on the season and Wingers is 5-1.

BREAKING NEWS: SM West has been chosen to host one of the four 6A State Regionals this Feb. Teams that will be here include: SMW, SMNW, SMN, SME, Lawrence, Lawrence Free State, Leavenworth & Topeka.

Update:No broken bones were found in Ben, Keck's elbow. The elbow was put back in place and a MRI will be forthcoming to see what his status will be. More than likely, he is done for the year, but he is in good spirits and thankful it wasn't more serious. Ben was back at practice supporting his team.

The Vikings season started with some good news and some really bad news.


The Good: The Vikings beat the SMN Indians 43-36

The Bad: The Vikings lost Sr. Ben Keck to a dislocated elbow in his first match of the year. Get well soon Ben. We will miss you on the mat.

Next up the West is the Fort Scott Duals on Sat. (Dec. 4) at Fort Scott, KS

Returning varisty wrestlers include Brock Gentry, Alex Earl, Kevin Glisson, Jack Kapaun, Ben Keck, Ryan Wingers, and Arrin Bernard. Doug Moles begins his second year as head coach. Bill Goodsen and former Viking Ben Sutherlin will be assistants. Ben comes back to coach his former team. Coach Sutherlin was a 2000 state runner up and is finishing his education degree from Central Missouri State University. Ben played 4 seasons for the mules football program and is also an assistant football coach at Olathe Northwest.

2004-05 Schedule is set!!! Check the link to the left. This year will be another exciting one as the Vikings have dropped the Derby and Nebraska tournaments and entered the Wichita North Dual style tournament and always tough BV Northwest Tournament. We have also combined the Lawrence and SMNW dual and dropped Harmon.
Congrats to Ryan Wingers on his 155 pound 2nd place finish at Kids Folkstyle State!!!


The Vikings finished 28th at the state meet this weekend. Heath Groom placed 6th and will have his name added to the Viking Wall of Fame. Every Viking had at least one win at state. Brock and Collin were one match from placing as well. Swander lost to RedCorn and Gentry lost 2-0 to Jeb Woodford (3rd) after beating the defending 103 state champ the round prior. Great job to all. Good bye seniors and lets get ready for 2004-05.

All 5 Vikings have made it to the second day at state. All 5 will be wrestling in the consolation 2nd round starting at 9:00. Good luck Brock, Collin, Ben, Heath and Justin.

West only scored 2.5 points and only had one win after the lunch break on Saturday in Leavenworth. The Vikings were in 3rd place and finished 6th. Gentry, Swander, Groom and Hansen all placed 2nd, while Keck placed 4th. These wrestlers are on to Wichita Friday and Saturday.

The Vikings finished 5th at League this weekend. West had 9 placers. Gentry (2nd), Swander(3rd), Keck, Groom, Bernard, Marlier and Hansen (4th), Earl, Wingers (5th). Next up is the start of the state series. Regionals will be at Leavenworth this Saturday. Top 4 finishers get a place in the state tournament.

West finished off it's dual season with a 60-16 victory over SM Northwest at West. The Vikings finish with a 7-9 dual record. Collin Swander finished off his last dual with a pin of Red Corn at 125. David Tindle also finished off his with a pin of James Ralstin. Heath Groom and Justin Hansen won by default in their final senior season dual matches. A special note also goes to Greg Rogers who pinned his opponent in his last wrestling action. Greg finished his 4-year campaign as a Viking on a high note. We are all proud of Greg's accomplishments. For those who don't know, Greg is blind.

Heath Groom lost a tough contested championship match 6-3 to Neil Cisper. Swander finished 3rd and Gentry finished 4th. The Vikings last dual of the season is Wednesday night at home against SM Northwest.

They beat Lincoln Northeast JV 42-34, and Lincoln North Star 54-25, while being defeated by Papillion LaVista 57-15 and Abe Lincoln 58-24. Wrestlers will be back at it Tuesday against SM South and Emporia on Seinor night at West. Their dual record now stands at 5-8.

The Vikings split two duals on Wednesday at home. The Vikings, who were missing #3 ranked David Tindle due to illness, lost a close dual 44-30 to Lawrence and beat Harmon 63-9. The dual against Lawrence was closer than the score as the Vikings dropped a close overtime match and were upset in another. Next up for the Vikings is the always tough, Derby Invitational on Friday and Saturday.



CONGRATS DAVID TINDLE......Johnson County Classic Champion. David pins Nick Clayton in overtime for the title at 145. Also, Heath Groom finished 5th and Justin Hansen finished 6th. The Vikings finished 12th out of 19 Johnson County schools. St. Aquinas finished 1st.

SM West finished 7th at the Shawnee Mission Northwest Tournament Saturday. Alex Earl (130) placed 4th, Collin Swander (125) placed 3rd, David Tindle(145)placed 1st, Ben Keck (152) placed 3rd, Heath Groom (171) placed 3rd and Justin Hansen (275) placed 4th. Tindle beat Christman from Campus for the 145 title. Christman placed 5th at state last year and is currently ranked 3rd. The Vikings scored 79 points. Campus took the team title with 207 points. Next up for the varsity is the Johnson County Classic next Friday and Saturday.

West went 2-3 on Saturday and won 3rd place at the Fort Scott Dual Tournament. The Vikings beat Cherryvale and Louisburg and dropped matches to Mill Valley, Fort Scott and a two point match to Pittsburg. The Vikings were missing 2 wrestlers in their lineup giving 12 points away before the matches started. Brock Gentry was out of the lineup again and hopes to return by the NW tournament, but realistically by the Classic in 2 weeks. Heath Groom, Arrin Bernard, Brett Marlier and Justin Hansen lead the Vikings with 4-1 records in the Fort. Collin Swander, David Tindle and Ben Keck also won 3 matches.

The Vikings started the year on a low note, losing a dual 52-21 at SM North. SM North, who returns nine seniors proved to be too much for the West grapplers. On a positive note, David Tindle pinned ranked wrestler Matt Cline with a beautiful Granby into a peterson in the matches final minute. Also, Swander, Alex Earl and Heath Groom won matches on varsity. Heath won a matchup of ranked wrestlers with a 7-0 against decision over Tim Wolkey. West was open at 103, 112 and 119 giving North a 18-0 lead from the start.

Brock Gentry went down last week with a seperated shoulder and is probably out until Janurary.

The Vikings start the new season trying to rebuild after losing many wrestlers from last years regional championship team. Vikings that return will serve as the leaders as many new wrestlers learn to step in to fill the gaps. Coach Doug Moles takes over as the new head coach and has brought in one of the best freshman classes. 22 freshman start the season, all looking for a chance at experience. The Vikings return 4 state qualifiers, including 3-time state qualifier Collin Swander. Collin has been a dependible wrestler for West the past 3 years. Brock Gentry also returns, with a season under his belt. All Brock did in his first year in wrestling is win 30+ matches, win league and regional titles as well as come within one match of placing at state. Brock also set the single season record for fall at West. Heath Groom and David Tindle also look to be even better than they were in 2003. Heath and David both reached state and won many medals last year helping the Vikings place in every tournament and take home two championships. (Gardner Edgerton and Regionals) The Vikings lost many wrestlers including 2X state placer Karl Kammerer and state qualifiers Zach Siegele, Tom Gay, Vinny Gay, Tim Mason, and Jeremy Mason. Also gone are Matt VanDeelen, Matt Vossler, David Jones and Robert Ladd.

Brock Gentry and Heath Groom are pre-season top 6 in their weight class in Kansas 6A. Both come in ranked 6th.
The Vikings placed 20th at the state tournament this weekend. Karl Kammerer placed 6th. Brock Gentry and Zach Siegele came up one win short of placing. Great job and wonderful year.




The vikings can now call themselves REGIONAL CHAMPIONS. West finished 30 points ahead of 2nd place Shawnee Mission North at the 6A Regional in Lawrence Saturday. The Vikes qualified 10 wrestlers for the state tournament next weekend. Regional champions were Brock Gentry and Karl Kammerer. Placing 2nd were Tim Mason, Heath Groom and Tom Gay. 3rd place went to Collin Swander, Jeremy Mason and Vinny Gay. Finishing 4th were David Tindle and Zach Siegele. Congrats to all the Viking faithful and see you all in Wichita.


The Vikings Placed 5th at league Sat. Brock Gentry brought home a League Championship and will have his name placed on the Wall Of Fame in the wrestling room. Karl Kammerer placed 2nd, Tim Mason 3rd and David Tindle 4th.

The sub-varsity season came to a close Saturday with the JV League Tournament at Olathe North. Taking home Championships were Alex Earl and Brett Marlier.




West finished 3rd Saturday at the SM North Invite with 137 points. Aquinas finished first with 172 and SM South finished 2nd with 140. Tom Gay posted a championship with a 1st period pin in the finals. Siegele and Vossler finished 2nd, Gentry, Tim Mason, Kammerer and Groom finished 3rd. Swander picked up a 4th place finish.

Tuesday Night the Vikings split two duals. In the first West beat SM South 59-24 and in the finale lost to Emporia 45-24. The Emporia dual was a good one. At 112, Swander had Ast on his back but couldn't finish him off and Ast came back to defeat Swander by pin in the 3rd. At 135, Jeremy Mason came back to beat his opponent 6-5. At 171, Vinny Gay was beaten 2-2 in 2OT. At 189 Tom Gay scored a reversal to tie his match with Heferon, before being reversed with seconds to go to lose 6-4. And finally at 215, Zach Siegele escaped with 1 second remaining in double OT to beat Costello.

The Vikings were beat 47-36 Wednesday night by SM Northwest. The Vikings had only 6 regulars in the line-up due to competition point allowance. The JV kids filled in and did a good job. Arrin Bernard won by pin in the 160 pound match to record his first varsity win. Congrats!!! On a side note, Sophmore Billy Lindsey won his first match as a Viking in the JV 171 division. WAY TO GO BILLY!!!!!!!!!!




Saturday the Vikings ran into some tough teams in the Midwest Classic in Lincoln, Nebraska. The team finished 1-4 in duals beating only Omaha Westside. Full results can be seen on the results page.


The Vikings beat Olathe South 50-27 Tuesday night.

The Vikings came away with an 11th place finish at the always tough Derby Invie on Fri and Sat. Karl Kammerer lost 10-8 to Matt Crystal in the 145 pound finals to place 2nd. Brock Gentry finished 4th and Collin Swander and Tim Mason finished 6th. The Vikings surprised a few in some of their matches with Collin Swander beating Ted Martin (3X State Champ from Texas) 13-6. Tim Mason also beat a Texas state Placer and Karl Kammerer beat Andy Loos 9-0 (ranked 2nd 5A). Nice job to all the wrestlers who wrestled this weekend.

The Vikings posted wins over Harmon (64-13) and Lawrence (42-31) on Tuesday to improve to 7-2 in duals this year. Next up for West is the Derby Tournament Friday and Saturday.



The Vikings ended Friday in first place but dropped off and picked up fourth place at the Johnson County Classic Saturday. Brock Gentry placed 2nd at 103. Zach Siegele placed 3rd, Collin Swander 4th, Tim Mason 4th, Matt Vossler 5th and Vinny Gay 6th. Congrats to the Vikings on a great tournament. SM West won their first tournament in nearly a decade Saturday taking the Gardner Tournament scoring 176.5 points. Second Place was Spring Hill with 141.5 points. West Placed 11 wrestlers and crowned 2 champions. Jeremy Mason at 130 and David Tindle at 135 placed first. Gentry, Swander, Tim Mason and Siegele placed second. Special recognition goes to Alex Earl who raised $375 for Takedowns For Downs Syndrome. SM West will get half the money collected from donations.
