These are three stones (Silver for the Moon, Gold for the Sun, and Black for the Beyond), also known as "Stones of Speculation," or "Clacha-Brath" ("judgment stones"). They are the manifestations of the three threshold times of Dawn (the gold, male stone), Dusk (the silver, female stone), and Midnight (the black, unknown stone).
The Pheryllt text refers to the stones as the "Stones of Triscale" because the symbol of the Celtic Triscale represents the "triune-manifestation" upon which the stones are spiritually based. (The Triscale is the Celtic equivalent to the "Wheel of Fate/Life," standing for the ever-revolving cycles of life and destiny.) These stones were a Druidic device for revealing the direction of such movement.
The basic elemental energy properties of gold, silver and carbon/coal have a great deal to do with the effectiveness of the stones (the quality of the answers they attract), so the stones should be naturally occurring gold, silver and carbon. If this is impossible, just add the dust/filings of these elements to the paint pigments, and paint three stones their respective colours.
Other suitable minerals are as follows:
-Hematite (for the silver stone)
-Pyrite (for the gold stone)
-Obsidian (for the black stone)
Many prefer to go to a beach to select their stones, though it’s unlikely to find any of a metallic content. If this appears to you, try these symbolic substitutes:
-Yellow=Gold
-Blue=Silver
-Black=Black
Once your stones have been found/made, keep them in a pouch or box of your own design. To use them, follow these three steps:
1. Pose your question.
2. Toss the stones out before you, over a level surface.
3. Reading the stones: Black is the indicator, so whichever stone is the closest to it will indicate the answer. Gold is the yes/positive stone, and silver is the no/negative stone. If they are equidistant, toss them again.
A more complex, but more authentic ritual involving the stones is called a "Tree Oracle," found in the Book of Pheryllt.
1. Locate a Personal Oracle Tree:
-This means to find some tree (preferable in a remote location), which seems special to you, which "calls" to you in a friendly, sympathetic way. (To the Celts, Oracle Trees were special beings, of immense age, that would function as mediators between the gods and man; they "bridged heaven and earth.")
-Certain trees will attract certain types of people, just as people find "sympathetics" among themselves. To locate one, you must be as open as possible--as receptive as possible when looking. The right tree will "make itself felt" when you encounter it.
2. Take Your Question Before the Oracle Tree:
-Choose the time of the working by intuition, as different species/alignments of trees are more active at certain times/phases of the day than others. Bring the Triscale Stones with you, as well as the following Druidic Incenses mixture and enough enter to use it:
Three Gold Incense:
(Use equal parts)
Oak Lead/Bark
Mistletoe
Herb Sacred to God form Being Used
3. Set Up Your Site fairly close to the tree, for the stones must be consulted within the energy-field of the tree. Kindle your incense, and keep it burning long enough for a good psychic atmosphere to be felt.
4. Call Upon Your God form to make his will known through the Oracle Tree. You must understand it is not the tree itself that is supplying the requested advice, but is simply a channel for the god form. (The term "Oracle" means, "that which speaks for a higher power.") Pose your question, and the reason you must know it.
5. Cast the Stones before the Oracle tree, when you feel the "moment is ripe with power." Through ONLY until an answer is obtained, and do not repeat the cast hoping for a better disposition--this will invalidate and confuse the system. TRUST the initial response.
