This is a page about our fish. I had a little fun first and made an aquarium of cyber-fish. I have found many fish gifs in my wanderings through the web and decided to put a few of them together. It takes a couple of minutes for these little fellas to load, but they're so much fun!! Then it's on to pictures and information about our two large aquariums!
Enjoy

Fish are wonderful pets for relaxation. There's nothing like soft music, a cup of coffee, and a cozy seat near a fish aquarium. They also need very little care. The initial outlay in cost can be expensive or not, depending on the size of the tank and the kind of fish-- but once set up it's mainly just feeding and cleaning.

These are our "Blood Parrots".They are a hybrid of the cichlid family. They are very slow moving and have a lot of personality. They'll come right up to your hand when you put it on the glass.
We have two aqariums--one 55 gallon and one 30 gallon tall. Each has an external filtration system, heater and lights. It's important to keep the tanks clean and we clean ours twice a month. It's a common mistake to over-feed fish, and this dirties the tank up faster. Fish don't need a lot of food and the rest is just waste.
Each time we clean out the tank we siphon out 1/3 of the water- never all of it. Siphon from the bottom so as to get the waste. Then we wipe the sides, fill the tank back up, add a water conditioner and whatever other additives may be needed depending on your water and type of fish, and it's done. All tanks should have a scavenger fish, such as a catfish. They eat off the bottom and help keep the tank clean. We also have a special fish that is an algae eater who also helps with the cleaning process.
Our other fish are "African Cichlids". They are very aggressive and fast moving. We keep them in the long tank with lots of large rocks piled haphazously so that there are lots of nooks and crevices. The fish dart in and out and the baby "fry" hide in the narrow crevices so that the bigger fish can't get to them. Here is a picture of one hiding.
It is very hard to get pictures of these fish. They hide when you go near the tank. They are fascinating to watch. They bear their young in their mouth and are very protective after they release them.
