Eggy
"Click on his name to see his photo"

"Eggy" is very special to me and we have being together now for 10 years.

I was offered the choice of two horses Eggy and a bay and I went into the paddock and Eggy gave me that look.

"The look said take me home do not let me go into a can" So, instead of getting on his back and trying him said will have the grey and can you deliver him as at that time did not have a float.

The first week of having Eggy I took him on an endurance ride and the conditions were not ideal and it ended in disaster and the poor horse tied up on a very slippery slope going down hill. He had never being on a hill before in his life and did not know where to put his feet. We did not try endurance again for another few years.

I did show ring work with Eggy and we did have some fun there. The first show I took him to there was our ring, and another ring beside it and the jumps were facing each other with the horse in the opposite ring coming toward us and Eggy thought that as we approached the jump that the horse in the other ring was going to jump into him and so he stopped and I did not landing neatly on the other side of the jump feet first, Eggy ran away and waited by the entrance to the ring. That was to be the start of what was a fruitful career in the show ring until we re-discovered endurance.

I have also taken Eggy beach racing as well as taking Eggy to the beach where we can boast that Eggy caught a fish, it was a flounder and somehow managed to get caught in Eggy's shoe. Another episode at the beach which still has us in stitches is when we went with firn to the beach and a dog bounded thorough the water towards the horses and firn spun but as we were deeper in the water Eggy tried to spin and fell and I went over his shoulder and straight into the drink. Boy was that one wet landing. As I came up Eggy was already leaving and so unusual for me stood and yelled at him, he then realised that I was not on his back turned and came back to me.

Next problem, how did I get back to the truck with wet clothes on. Simple remove the top and ride back in wet bra and jods much to the amusement of the locals. The expressions were priceless but yet not an experience I want to repeat. We made it back to the truck with dented pride and no change of clothes. A long drive home too as we are two hours from the beach.

Eggy loves to cuddle and will go to sleep on you, he has at many times, and once at an endurance ride where the humidity was high and horses were being vetted out because of heat exhaustion. I go to the vet five minutes before time cause Eggy is asleep, and as we were beside the vet ring, that he come and take Eggy's heart rate, which was well below the required qualifying rate.

If Eggy is lying down in his paddock you can go and lie down beside him and he will put his head into my lap and fall asleep on it where I can cuddle him like that for hours on end. He also has his favourite spot in the shed and will lean on your head or shoulder for cuddles. In his favourite spot you can do anything with him and he races into it and nearly slides under the rail some days trying to get there.

Eggy at some stage was badly beaten and had an attitude like you would not believe and even after all the time I have had him still cannot use a whip on him. Using a whip only makes him worse and he will get bratty kicking out and bucking and really spitting the dummy about what you want him to do. Eggy is not an easy ride and many wonder why I put up with his antics but he is by no way a nasty horse and if you ride him with a confident leg and light hand you can get him to do anything for you.

I have also taught him how to lope like a western horse which did help him when were doing endurance as he learnt that he can lope along instead of tearing off at 100 miles an hour his normal speed.

Eggy is very special to me and would not be without him.

He is a good babysitter of other horses and knows when he has to be the gentleman and he also knows when he can clown around.

I hope that you have enjoyed reading all about Eggy and thank you for coming to visit. Click on Eggy's name at the top and you will get to meet the man in my life. The ribbons in the photo are from a show where Eggy was having a good day. The show was held in Hamilton, New Zealand where they had a combination of classes.

Games is another area that Eggy is good at.

The time of this update 24.11.03 - Eggy is now retired as he suffers back problems.

Nadia did try and use him for one season of pony club but Eggy was not an easy ride for her.

She qualified him for the Area Dressage Champs in Taranaki but as the weather was poor Eggy did not settle and though she rode well he did not like the thunder and lightening.
