EXPERIMENTAL AIRCRAFT ASSOCIATION - CHAPTER 249

PO Box 5792, Greenville, South Carolina 29606

February, 1999 Newsletter

Next Meeting - The next meeting will be Monday, Jan 1, 1999 at 7:30 p.m. at Wayne Pearce's house in Easley. He is building a Lightning Bug. Map enclosed. All are invited to check out his progress.

January Meeting – Approximately 25 regulars were present. A visitor, Chris , from Anderson UltraLights was there - he is currently building a GP4, real nice, fast wood aircraft. We saw a Bill Binford video - The Fires of Kuwait - about Sadam and the Iraqi invasion and the burning of the Kuwaiti oil fields.

Flying Tales -

Any other I learned about flying from that stories from the members would be appreciated, both for the lessons learned the cheap way and for their story value.

NOTAM - Anderson has an AWOS! 120.675 on the dial or 864-226-9522 by phone.

Young Eagles Update - Bill Binford of our EAA chapter was recently recognized by the national Young Eagles headquarters for flying 100 Young Eagles! Congratulations for the good deeds - showing tomorrow's pilots what private aviation is all about.

Schedule - A 1999 reminder of monthly meeting dates for our chapter is attached to this newsletter. Plan ahead, bring a friend and any news you'd like to share with other members.

Fuel Exhaustion/Starvation - I went to the FAA Aviation Safety Program at Greenville Tech and it got me wondering… Most of us have flown Cessnas with dual tank feeds - how do you know both tanks are feeding, except with flowrate gauges? Don't trust the tank gauges; they must be accurate at full and empty ONLY. I was never taught to switch to one tank, verify flow and fuel quality, check the other tank and then back to 'both'. Real bad surprise if only one tank is good and half way there, you get that sudden silence! Any comments?

I Knew That!

91.123c: Each pilot in command who, in an emergency, or in response to a traffic alert and collision avoidance system resolution advisory, deviates from an ATC clearance or instruction shall notify ATC of that deviation as soon as possible.

AIM: Closed Traffic - Successive operations involving takeoffs and landings or low approaches where the aircraft does not exit the traffic pattern.

AIM: Common Traffic Advisory Frequency (CTAF) - A frequency designed for the purpose of carrying out airport advisory practices while operating to or from an airport without an operating control tower. The CTAF may be a UNICOM, Multicom, FSS, or tower frequency and is identified in appropriate aeronautical publications.

AIM: Compass Rose - A circle, graduated in degrees, printed on some charts or marked on the ground at an airport. It is used as a reference to either true or magnetic direction.

AGL (A Good Laugh) - More Bumper Snickers:

I don’t suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

Hard work has a future payoff. Laziness pays off NOW!

IRS: We’ve got what it takes to take what you’ve got.

How can I miss you if you won’t go away?
