StarCraft Shareware A Clean Place - June 3rd, 1999 @ 9:11 PM EST - [Tweety@Bird]
- Even though I own the retail version of StarCraft and Brood-War you can still find me playing quite often on the Shareware version and the reason for this is because it is a place where you can play a fair game and not worry about if your opponents are using hacks or are going to disconnect on you. The world of StarCraft Shareware is a clean place although this is soon to change for I have noticed that there are sites out there in which promote the use of hacks such as the map hack which reveals the map so that you could watch your opponents every move. Right now I'm asking you all to please respect fair play and honor, do not use hacks even though it may be very tempting at times. If you find a web site or place where people are promoting the use of hacks then please put an end to it by contacting Blizzard Entertainment at hacks@blizzard.com and informing them of these web sites. Lets keep Battle.Net a fun place to be!

Strategy Section Added - May 26th, 1999 @ 9:06 PM EST - [Tweety@Bird]
- As you can see I have made many changes to the site, one being the new strategies section, this will help you become a better StarCraft player and give you a little more knowledge about the game it's self. If you have any addition strategies or anything at all which may provide useful for other StarCraft players then please e-mail it to me. In the future plan to see many updates and soon I will be setting up the first StarCraft Shareware tournament, so keep updated.

If you have StarCraft Shareware installed on your PC and are getting tired of the single, two player (Byways) map, then maybe you should think about buying the full retail version of StarCraft/Brood-War. There is a way that you could play other maps on the StarCraft Shareware, although this method is not supported or endorsed by Blizzard Entertainment. To do this you must download a special patch applier (ploader), created by Camelot Systems. I have added an additional batch file to the patch which will allow you to select which map you wish to play.

StarCraft Shareware Patch Applier Package, Includes:

To download this package please click here. (535 kb)
After downloading extract all files to your StarCraft Shareware installation directory (most likely "C:\Program Files\StarCraft Shareware(ED)\") and then run "StarCraft.bat", for further instructions please read "instructions.txt".

The best way to become a good player is to play a lot. Strategies may give you tips on how to play, although them alone will never make you a good player. Right now I'm just going to give you a few very important tips that you should take into consideration while playing. First, always think about what you are going to do before the game begins, don't think that by this I mean make a plan and stick to it because you must change your strategy each game according to whom you are playing, but a good idea of what you are doing will help and avoid the accidental mistakes of building the wrong buildings/units.

Never forget to build a few "Missile Turrets" around your base and in the center as well, the largest mistake I see people making is leaving the center of their base open so all I have to do is fly in and destroy all their important buildings and SCVs, SCVs are very valuable, not because of their cost but because of how long it will take you to replace them all and the amount of minerals you would have received if they were there. Also make sure that you build a couple "Bunkers" in the entrance of your base, try to put them in a choke point if possible. Don't make a mistake by forgetting to fill them up with "Marines" or "Firebats". Later on in the game it is a good idea to upgrade your "Marines" attack range from your "Academy", although don't rush it.

When setting up your defense try to put a bunker with a "Siege Tank" in front of it and a "Missile Turret" in front of the "Siege Tank". The reason for this is so that if someone attempts to nuke you then your "Missile Turret" will see his "ghost" and your "Siege Tank" will be able to kill it. This setup will also protect it from air and ground attacks, even rushes. Now one of the best defenses is to keep a "SCV" or two near your defense and make sure that you make use of these, as soon as someone attacks you and a building or large unit is damaged then send those "SCVs" to work on repairing the damaged units, the difference this makes is incredible, I have won so many battles by using this strategy.

Never forget to build the proper defense right away, but also very important, don't try to upgrade too fast without building offensive units, without both it is very hard to reach a victory. Rushing is one of the most commonly used strategies for it is the easiest to perform and takes very little skill, it is the strategy that most newbies use although if you can then try to learn how to play with your brain and not your strength. Rushing is simply building lots of "Barracks" and as many "Marines" as possible and then attacking very early in the game before your enemy gets a chance to build defense.

Don't make the mistake of keeping all your units in one place, spread them out a bit to avoid loosing them all by a nuke or getting slaughtered by cloaked units. Use everything you have! Don't just make one type of unit, make a little of each and take advantage of their strong points. Make small attacks on your opponent every now and then to keep them on the defensive while you work on upgrading your units and expanding. A fact that you must already know is that you must expand as soon as possible and take as much as you can, in the long one it is the person with more resources that will win unless he is real dumb.

Work fast and use hotkeys to assist you in your victory. To use hotkeys simple select the unit(s) in which you would like to assign a hotkey and press Ctrl+# (# = any number from 0-9), to recall the unit(s) simple press the selected key. Try to keep one hand on the mouse and the other on the key-board. Also use short-cut keys, instead of clicking on a "SCV", clicking on build and then clicking on "Supply Depot" just click on the unit, press "B" for build and then "S" for Supply Depot". Using these short-cuts will make things much easier and faster for you.

When placing units think about where you are going to put them and how they will best defend against an attack. If there is a hill then take advantage of that, remember that ground units cannot see what is on top, there for giving you the ability to shot while they can't even see you. Something I do to annoy my enemies is build "Missile Turrets" all over the map and put a few "Siege Tanks" around them to protect them from ground units, the reason why I do this is because for my opponent to attack me he will run into several of these little defenses giving me time to prepare my defense and taking out some of his units. this also makes it very hard for them to move around because they never know when they are going to run into something. Spreading "Spider Mines" around the map is also a great strategy, they will catch "Ghosts" before they get a chance to nuke you and also work as little detectors to warn you of upcoming attacks.

For now this is all I'm going to say, listen and think about what I told you. In the future I will be adding many more tips and strategies, if you would like to send me any strategies of your own then please feel free to do so. Oh and one more thing, don't waist your time telling people to type /refresh because it really doesn't exist and I have no idea where all of you got this from. If you think about the logic of an internet connection then you will know that there is no way there can be a /refresh, a person can show 1 green bar of lag and still lag in a game, or show 6 red bars and play at a nice fast speed. If anything then all a /refresh could possibly do if it existed is reping to check the latency.

Battle.net is a free gaming server designed by Blizzard, which allows multi-player play over the internet for StarCraft and Diablo.

The following commands can be used in any chat channel. For StarCraft players, they can also be used during game setup or while a game is in progress.

/whois [user] - (Ex: /whois TPark or /whois #133115)
Looks up some basic information on a user, including their account number and their current location. This is an excellent way to find your friends online. typing /whois #[number] (E.G. /whois #1).
Aliases for this command : /where /whereis

/whoami - (Ex: /whoami) - displays your information on Battle.net.

/whisper [user] - (Ex: /whisper JohnS or /whisper #236325)
Sends a private message to a user online regardless of the channel they are in. This is an excellent way to let a friend know you are online.
Aliases for this command: /w /msg

/squelch [user] - (Ex: /squelch BFitch or /squelch #223251)
Ignores any future messages from that user effectively muting that user to you.
Aliases for this command: /ignore

/unsquelch [user] - (Ex: /unsquelch BFitch or /unsquelch #223251)

/dnd [text] - (Ex: /dnd sorry playing a game with GFraizer)
"Do Not Disturb" - prevents ALL whispers from displaying to your screen. Its use is similar to the /away command. To turn the DND mode off, just type /dnd without a reason. This will prevent people from sending whispers to you while in a game as well. You are still able to see all normal public channel messages.

/who [channel] - (Ex: /who Open Tech Support)
Displays a list of all users in the given channel.

/stats [user] - (Ex: /stats DavidN or /stats #42)
