Practically every article of food is fit to eat for dogs, except CHOCOLATE. This contains theobromine, which make the kidneys produce extra urine. When a dog gets too much of this substance, he can die, while theobromine also can paralyse the cardiac muscle. Therefore: Never give Chocolate to your Bully!!

ENERGY

Food for dogs have to contain the following groups of nutritions:

- carbohydrates

-fats

-proteins

-minerals

-vitamines

-raw fibre

-water

Carbohydrates mainly produce energy, but it also can be transformed into fat as spare food.1 gram of carbohydrates produces 4 kcal. (17 kj.)

Fats also produce energy, but can also directly be used as spare food. 1 gram of fat produces 9 kcal. (37 kj.)

Proteins mainly serve as nutritive substance. Proteins can also be transformed into fat. 1 gram of protein produces as energy 4 kcal. (17kj.)

Minerals: -f.e. calcium and phosphor serve as nutritivesubstance.f.e. natrium, magnesium, calcium and chlorine provide a good action of the nerve-system

Vitamines are used as submatters of enzymes. Too little vitamines can cause diseases of shortages. Nevertheless: also too much vitamines are injurious to the healthiness.Vitamines which are solvable in fat: A,D, E and K. Vitamines which are solvable in water are: B and C.

Raw fibre are indigestible carbohydrates and proteins. Still they are important, because they have an influence on the movements of the intestine.

Water is essential to come about all chemical transformations. It also is important as part of the transportsystem (blood and lymphe) and as means of the removal of waste matters.

FOODSTUFF

Meat

A dog can't live on only meat. Indeed: a dog can very well become a vegetarian. Meat is a good and easy supplier of proteins. It can better be cooked. Be carefull with raw meat, while this can contain diseasegerms, f.e. salmonella (this can cause an enteritis). Better give no raw pork, because of raw pork a dog can catch the disease of Aujeszky#. This is an absolutely killing disease. Accept liver, slaughter wastes is poor in iron. Tripe contains mainly pre-digested vegetable material, so it's very usefull. In dehydrated meat the proteins and minerals are still the same, but it hardly contains vitamines. Consider this.

Bones and cartilage

Especially bones contain a lot of calcium and phosphor. Cartilage contains only a little calcium. Bones of poultry and pork splinter quick and therefore it shouldn't be given.

Fish

Also fish is rich in proteins. Uncooked herring and freshwater fish contain a substance (theaminase) which destroys vitamine B1. That's why this sorts of fish should be given cooked. Be cautious with fis-heads in connection with hooks.

Milk

In milk the proportion calcium-phosphor is excellent. Daily a little bit of milk does no harm. Still milk contains also a substance called lactose. Some dogs (especially older dogs) are intolerant of this substance. They get troubling diarrhoea. Milk can be replaced by buttermilk or yogurt.

Cheese

Cheese consists for the most part of protein. Cheese made of full-craem milk also contains fat. remove the preserving film of the cheese before giving it to the dog. Never give mouldy cheese.

Eggs

This is the best source of protein there is. Eggs should be boiled. The yolk is rich in vitamine B and proteins.

Vegetable food

Vegetable food is rich in carbohydrates and shoul be given cooked or grinded, while a vegetable cell-wall containes a fairly bit of celluloid. A dog can't digest this matter.

Bread

Brown bread contains vitamine B, white bread doesn't. It also contains some more raw fibre, therefore it's less digestible. So it works a little laxative, while white bread can constipate the bowels (especially when it's new, therefore rather give old bread).

Fruit

Especially semi-tropical fruit and tomatoes hold a lot of vitamines and minerales. Bananas hold a lot of sugar.

Commercial dogfood

It does no harm to add some meat, greavy or table-waste to make the commercial dogfood more tasty as long as you make allowance for the prescriptions of the manufacturer.

DIET WITH DIARRHOEA

Diarrhoea can have many causes. When the dog has a normal behaviour and he only does have trouble with diarrhoea, you better let him fast the first day. Be sure you let him drink (f.e. thea, rice-water or apple-juice). The second day you can feed the dog rusk. After that you can feed him manetary it's normal menu. When the diarrhoea is still the same after three days, you better consult a vet. Of course you immediatly consult a vet when the diarrhoea is bloody, or when the dog is obvious ill and less active then he normal is.

Aujeszky=Named after a Hungarian vet. Discovered in 1902. Also called pseudo rabies, a disease from pigs caused by a herpes virus. Contagious for dogs and cats. Causes a deadly desease called encephalomyelites. (Itch plague)
