Mellisa,
Sorry I took so long to respond to you about Henry Agustus Ward . I am in no way as organized as you are but as far as I can tell Henry Agustus Ward is our Ward. The way I understand it is his first wife was a sister to Fannie Jane Howell Wheelock my ggggrandmother. I have yet to find his first wifes name so if you have it or anything on her family let me know because my Howell info is limited. I've only been at this for a year and I'm still learning.
Henry Agustus Ward grew up west of Rochester Ny somewhere near Cuylerville. His education was sponsored by a rich uncle or grandfather named Levi Ward. He went to the acadamy in Wyoming Ny and if you if you go to Wyoming you can stop by the town library and tell them your kin to Ward and you came to see his private collection. A smile and a hand shake will get you in if they can remember where they hid the key(it's on the door jamb). The collection is a must see and a well kept secret in american history. Everytime I see an Indiana Jones movie I think of the stories my grandmother told of him. He was world famous for his travels, research, collections, and ability to tell stories of his adventures. He was killed in Buffalo by a car. Some other family members, the Duryea's made the first massproduced car in america. I hope it wasn't one of their cars that leveled him. While I was in Rochester last fall I went to his grave site in Mt. Hope cem. in downtown Rochester. It's a big rock, just a big rock. There used to be an urn with his ashes in it till it was stolen in the thirties. Some kids found the urn and placed the ashes in a jar and sold the urn. I asked my dad how much he got for the urn.... he didn't think that was funny. The depression was depressing for every one. His company ward scientific is still around and I found a webpage for it while I was there in Ny but didn't mail it to myself in Texas. Can't find it now. His son wrote a biography of him which I'm looking for a copy. I'm sure his journals are published and on my next trip north I'll see if I can find some and let you know if you are interested. I will send you pictures of him and his stone. hope this helps you in your research.
Other surnames I'm looking into are Nelson of Vt, Dixon of TX, Wheelock,
Duryee/Duryea, Howell, Forsythe, HOWE, and Hayward. Is your Howe
line the same ones who bought Duryee Forsythe Scale Company in Rochester
in 1857? The're still in business in New Jersey. http://www.HOWESCALE.COM/
I'm trying to find out what happened to the company after my ggggrandfather
Chancy Duryee died in 1856.
Best wishes
Merrill Nelson
