Hi Melissa,
I noticed you had alot of Van Wart's in you line. I am trying
to find the parents of my Great Grandfather William Henry Van Wart.
This is a brief history on him.
He came ot Maryland in 1856, we believe working on a ship. He
met my GGrandmother named Mary Jane Morgan. He stayed and married her
in 1857.
According to his death notice in 1903. He was the grandson of
Issac Van Wart one of the captors of Major Andre'. He was born in
Westchester County in 1806 since he was 97 when he died. Now his tombstone reads that
he was born in 1820, but we tend to think that he protrayed himself much younger
to his new wife. She was born in 1836. We researched Issac Van
Wart and while one Issac Van Wart was among the 3 captors of Major Andre' there was
another, his uncle who was Captain Issac Van Wart who had previously captured
Major Andre' but he was traded back for prisoners. We think this
one is his grandfather.
We found a letter of petition for back pay to the military from him
and his wife Amy. In the letter he states that 2 of his grandchildren
live with them.
A daughter named Lavilla age 13, and a grandson named Henry age 14.
The letter was written in 1820. I think that Henry is my Great Grandfather.
I do not know what happened to his parents or why he and his sister were
living with their grandparents.
I am hoping to find someone who is researching this family and lost track of Henry.; Although he went by the surname Van Wart, one of his son's my grandfather Joseph Eldred went by Van Wert. Joseph's family is buried alongside his brother Asbury's family and the tombstone's read Van Wart and Van Wert.
Have you ever seen anything on a Lavilla Van Wart or a Henry who were the grandchildren of Captain Issac Van Wart and his wife Amy from Westchester County, NY.
Any help will be greatly appreciated
Darlene
Also we think he may have been married previously since he appears
to have been about 50 years old when he married my GGrandmother, that is if
he was born in 1806. If he was born in 1820 as well he may have been
a widow.
