Dear Melissa,

Thank you for telling me how to get this into e-mail.  If you want other
generations in any of the families, just ask and I will see if I have them.  Could you give me the name and e-mail addresses of someone in the Resseguie line that does genealogy?  We are looking for some "lost relatives."  Mainly the children of Philip's 1st marriage.  My mother was a product of his second marriage.  Perhaps someone one knows where this family is.

This got to be longer than I planned, but you have a choice of what you want to use.

So far I am the one that does genealogy in the family.  A few are interested but are busy doing other things at present.

I am 72 and retired with an MSW.  I was a School Social Worker and since I have been home, have taken up genealogy and love it.  My husband Bill says he only knows what I look like from the left side of my face I spend so much time on the computer.  Instead of dealing with other peoples dysfunctional families, I am finding out about my own skeletons!

1757
in Prob. Ct..  She was the daughter of 18. Pierre Bontekoe, (Imm. 1689)
and 19. Marguerite Collinot.

Notes for Alexander ResseguieII, Imm. 1709:
Alexander immigrated to NY after the death of his father, met and
married Sara Bontekoe in 1709.  When he arrived in NY, he carried with
him a small hair trunk that contained whatever was left of their
fortunes in France.  His brother  Peter, the second son, was raised and
educated with the intention of being sent to France to reclaim the
abandoned estates.  Just before his departure he contracted small pox
and died.  The project was abandoned.

Alexander moved to what is now known as Ridgefield Connecticut and
purchased land.  Two of the homes that he had built and lived in are
still standing in Wilton and were built before 1750.

The trunk and part of its contents was passed down to one of his
descendants, Col. George Gray of San Franciso.  When the earthquake
struck San Francisco in 1906 some of the houses had to be destroyed to
try and stop some of the destruction and save others. His was one of
those chosen and he was given 5 minutes to save whatever he could and
the trunk was one of the possessions he took, a souvenir of the French
Huguenot persecution.

Alexandre was a man of property and a descendant of a noble family.  He
was a silk manufacturer and at the time of the French Huguenot
persecution, he gathered valuable papers and cash and fled across the
border to Switzerland and then to England in 1685.  Family records show
he was accompanied by his son Alexander.  There are no records that show
what happened to his wife and family.  As there is no record of
Reseguier in the Huguenot churchyard in NY, it is presumed that he died
and was buried in England.

NY.

In the archives of the church," L'Eglise de St. Esprit" or the Church of
the Holy Ghost, it is noted, "Pierre Bontekoe and Margaret Collinot, his
wife, fugitives from the Isle of Re, near the city of LaRochelle, in
1684, fled to England, came to New York in 1689".

The original name was Bondecoux.  When the Bontekoe's reached NY there
were about 200 French Huguenots living there.  They worshipped
temporarily in a building on Marketfield St.  They built their own stone
church in 1695 on Pine St. with an adjoining burial ground.  After 130
years the property was bought by the US. Gov't. in 1831 and built the
Treasury building which stands between Wall St. and Pine.  The remains
in the cemetery were placed in Vault # 85 in St. Marks Churchyard at
Stuyvesant Pl. and 2nd Avenue.

The name was later changed to Bontecou and the descendants were quite
numerous.  Several of the branches later located to Connecticut.

Notes for Jean Davids:
Jean Davids came from France and went to the W. Indies where he met
Ester Vincent and was married there.  They settled in Laval Canada where
Jean was an Indian trader, often away from home for more than a year at
a time.  These "courcurs de bois" or forest runners lived like the
Indians and often lived with them.

Jean Davids did this for over 20 years.  When the Esopus Indians
attacked Kingston, NY in 1663 and captured many of the inhabitants, the
townspeople enlisted the help of Jean Davids and some Mohawk Indians to
negotiate their return.

The family moved to Kingston, NY in 1687 and were members of the 1st
Reformed Church of Tarrytown, NY which was a Dutch Reformed Church.  The
Davids moved To NY, NY before 1694 because their youngest son Daniel was
baptized in the French Huguenot Church of the Holy Spirit in April
1694.  Their married daughter, Margaret Montross, and her family also
came with the Davids to Kingston.
