Hi,
I started down a path of trying to find out which Sarah Varnum married both
John Hobson and Phillip Nelson in the 1600s, but the more I looked in the
Essex-roots archives, the more I wondered if there was any more info on the
Hobson family. The info on Nelson family and it's ties to both the Varnums
and Jewetts is a pretty tangled web. But I don't know much about the Hobsons.
So checked the web references of the people on this mailing list and found:

HOBSON, Sarah VARNUM/VARNAM m John Hobson son of William HOBSON ( BORN: , England DIED: ABT. 1694, MARRIED: Ann Reynor).  Sarah and John Hobson's son John was born 1680 and married Mehitabal Hidden and Dorcas Pearson (according to  http://www.my-ged.com/db/page/ward/17709  or email sarafina@kua.net )

also http://www.tiac.net/users/weymouth/Html/fam05938.htm shows that Sarah and John Hobson married 12/4/1679 Rowley, MA and that Sarah was also married to Phillip Nelson Born: 16 APR 1659 at: Rowley, MA Died: 4 DEC 1721 at:
Rowley, MA whose  Father was Capt Phillip Nelson and Mother: Sarah Jewett.
Sarah Varnum and Phillip Nelson had Sarah NELSON Born: 26 DEC 1686 at:
Rowley,MA,: Philip NELSON Born: 19 APR 1690 at: Rowley, MA Died: 4 DEC ,
Sarah NELSON Born: 19 APR 1690 at: Rowley, MA Married: 9 MAY 1715 Died: 26 MAY 1773 at: Rowley, MA Spouses: John HAZEN and: Hannah NELSON Born: 4 SEP 1694 at: Rowley, MA Married: 3 NOV 1714 at: Rowley, MA Spouses: Joseph RICHARDSON

But Jasper@empire.net shows that the Sarah Jewett who married William Hobson had an aunt named Sarah Jewett b 1639 who married Capt Phillip Nelson and that this Sarah Jewett Nelson had another niece named Joanna Jewett b: May 08, 1667 in Ipswich, Suffolk County, Massachusetts who married Thomas Varnum m: November 10, 1697.

Then I also have that  Joanna Jewett a cousin to Ruth Jewett (and possibly
sister to Sarah Jewett) married Joseph Bradley Varnum [III] VOD: baptised
6/3/1677,  in the Jewett lineage from -  Tristan Williams trisw@ljcrf.edu
http://www.geocities.com/yosemite/7379  Owner, JEWETT family discussion
group (JEWETT@rmgate.pop.indiana.edu) and Thomas Varnum's sister Hannah's son by Ezra Colburne married a Nelson:  Ezra4 born 1682 married  Lucy NELSON - all at the Varnum genealogy page at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/7945

There you can see that Ruth Jewett and Joseph Varnum have many descendants
with Nelson as first or middle names.

But no-one seems to know which Sarah Varnum married John Hobson and Phillip
Nelson. KindredKonnections once had this listing VARNUM,SARAH m JOHN HOBSON 1657 MAR IPSWICH,ESSEX,MA which is a generation off from the previous info. and in the following references the Hobson widow who married Phillip Nelson seems to have been a Mary and no mention of a Sarah Varnum.

In the Hammett papers, p 276 : Humphrey Reynor of Rowley died in 1660 ...
will dated Sept 10, 1660 ... his daughters Whipple and Hobson ... grandchildren
Umphrey Hobson, John Hobson, William Hobson are all mentioned.

In the Essex County, Massachusetts, Probate Records, Supplement here are
references for these grandchildren and their father it seems:
